Oh God I hope Ed Laurie doesn't read this. He must be so over the Leonard Cohen comparisons. But it's not just Ed Laurie's voice that reminds me of Leonard Cohen but it's his choice of words, his delivery, and his orchestration. He's got the backing chorus, soaring vocals, and a bit of the pretension of old man Cohen. What sets him apart from Leonard Cohen and the bulk of other singer-songwriters are his European influences, his classical and Spanish guitar styles and his individuality. Ed Laurie's upcoming record is called [...]

Looking for some delicately precise guitar work with a melancholy air? Look no further that Meanwhile In the Park , the debut EP from British singer/songwriter Ed Laurie . It's a short but artfully crafted seven song CD that has a classical European guitar / Spanish flamenco feel to it that positions Laurie in the form of a troubadour, sharing his thoughts over a singular but complex guitar line. Initially the album was available only through iTunes, but since its release Laurie has been picked up by Dangerbird Records . It's available digitally now through [...]

British singer/songwriter Ed Laurie's Dangerbird Records debut, 'Meanwhile In The Park' will see its digital release on September 23rd, 2008. Attempting to describe his extraordinary songs, such names as Leonard Cohen, Jacques Brel, Syd Barrett , and Scott Walker have all been floating around. But like all great songwriters, Ed Laurie takes his influences and molds them into something new and unique. By blending classic troubadour chords, Spanish guitar and Latin-tinged acoustic rhythms, his haunting, heartfelt songs have that rare ability to take you to another place so that [...]
I had a real problem trying to organize this mix, as it is all over the place. I didn't even realize how many remixes I had, until I looked at the final version. Monday, August 25, 2008 As I mentioned in the podcast and film report this weekend (see, it does pay to listen or read other features on the site!), the wife and I will be driving from Seattle to San Diego from August 29 to September 14. I'm betting it will be the sort of amazing experience that will totally prevent me from writing, so don't expect any posts at all (not even from Noah or John Michael) throughout that time. Now, with that noted let's get on with this week's [...]

As usual well past due, here's the latest (and not-so-latest) from the Licorice Pizza mailbox. There's a pretty good selection of stuff here; something for everyone's palate, I think. My personal pick of the litter is the tune from Brooklyn's TK Webb & the Visions, "Teen is Still Shaking." This is a spacey metal song with Dylan-esque vocals. My vote for weirdest song is Lexicon's hip-hop take on the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated." And winning the honor for "Singer I'd Most Like to Leave Everything For" is Kirsten Price. Like always, follow the [...]
Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By *The podcast will be up later this afternoon. I had a slight recording problem. I also posted a special podcast a few days ago. The shownotes are already up for that. Bark Hide and Horn, "Treasure of the Everglades" Bark Hide and Horn list the "spirit of invention" as an influence. I would say it's not so much an influence as it is their style. They

The blogosphere was in a bit of a tizzy a month back with the announcement of the debut record from UK "folk singer" Ed Laurie. The track "Albert" was such a nice approximation of Leonard Cohen meets Gilberto Gil that it rightfully stoked a few fires in bloggers searching for tangible, authentic music. For now things have calmed down but expect to hear more from this artist as release date approaches. In the meantime here are a couple demo's. One from the new record and a bonus one that didn't make the cut. [...]
As the book is slammed shut on the muggy month of July, we're pleased to bring you another thirteen sweet tunes to load up on your Zune and listen to while you pretend you are not uncomfortably hot and you don't have an enormous sweat spot across the back shoulder of your shirt. As always, thanks to the bands, labels, and PR pimps who slid these downloads our way to share with you. Mercury Rev - "Senses On Fire" [...]
"Albert" - Ed Laurie Wow. Warm and wondrous neo-folk from a young British singer/songwriter. Listen to the stirring tension in the verse--the song is quiet, but with a restless heartbeat--and then how it resolves in that gorgeous chorus with its shy, unexpected melody. Oh my. For me, this is goosebump material, and I don't say that lightly, or very often. Although he is basically a guy with a guitar, Laurie does not sound like a typical singer/songwriter, both because of his husky baritone, with its air [...]

This is the year of two revivals in my mind, Joni Mitchell & Leonard Cohen. Any song that brings both of these to mind has got to worth a little of your time surely? Add to that a little Jose Gonzalez and the fact that you'll need headphones to hear the various shifting textures going on underneath what I initially took to be a very simple arrangement, like recorders there's not enough clarinets in rock if you ask me. A fellow survivor of the toilet circuit in London (or so his biog says), but you'd never know it to hear [...]
