Like so many of our Covered in Folk feature subjects, I discovered country-folk singer-songwriter John Prine via coverage - through both his own "original" version of Roly Salley composition Killing the Blues , which Shawn Colvin attributed to Prine himself on her mid-nineties cover album Cover Girl , and Bonnie Raitt's ubiquitous version of Angel From Montgomery , a sentimental bluesfolk number familiar to anyone who has ever flipped the radio dial to a Contemporary station in the last few decades. It wasn't until much later, during a week in attendance at [...]
The scintillating Eddi Reader returned to Dublin on Friday night to promote last year's Love Is The Way album. This was a far more stripped down version than the previous gig, with a four-piece acoustic band made up of great guitarist and main songwriter Boo Hewerdine, accordion player Alan Kelly and Trash Can Sinatra John Douglas. Tonight’s set list was peppered with Fairground Attraction classics as well as great tracks from her solo canon. Classic opener ‘Patience of Angels’ proved a popular choice whilst back to back new tracks, the hymnal ‘Silent Bells’ and [...]

Tonight is Rabbie Burns night here in Scotland. He was born on this day in 1759. There is of course the usual celebrations that take place on his birthday, these celebrations usually consist of haggis, neeps and tatties but i'm going for something more musical tonight. Burns is perhaps most famous for Auld Lang Syne but he also wrote a lot of other wondrous pieces. Among them is my favourite, "Ae Fond Kiss". It's an aching ode to a love that's been lost. I remember studying the work of Burns at school and this was the one that really stood [...]

The elderchild doesn't turn seven until Wednesday, but with grandparents spread far in every direction, and friends available on weekends only, we've been in full celebratory swing since Friday. This year's theme is the circus, and we're giving it a good go, following up a week of trapeze and tumbling camp with a trip to Circus Smirkus with a few friends tomorrow. The long stretch gives me license to ponder the child she has become, and I've tried, turning to memory and the albums that line our bookcases with an eye towards recovering the [...]
