Thirteen classic Yiddish songs in stunning performances by artists Jewish and non-Jewish.
The Grim Reaper evidently took it easy in September, at least by the standards of the last few months. One notable non-musician death last month was that on September 20 of one Leonard Skinner, the Florida gym coach whose insistence on cut hair inspired a group of future rock stars to name their group in ironic fashion after him — Lynyrd Skynyrd. As before, all songs listed are compiled in one mix (and I'm afraid that the quality on some tracks isn't great). Mike Edwards , [...]

[UPDATE: His daughter, Tricia Leigh Fisher of Los Angeles, told the AP that he died Wednesday night at his Berkeley home of complications from hip surgery.] The singer and entertainer and TV star of his own show and co-star of films Bundle Of Joy and Butterfield 8 had his heyday in the 1950s...But Fisher is best known for having [...]

David already posted about Eddie Fisher's passing, but I need to give my eulogy as well, in honor of my childhood ignorance. Eddie Fisher was my father's teenage idol. Years later, once my father had an established practice as an attorney, Eddie Fisher's representative, Victor Jarmel, contacted my father and asked him to represent Eddie. My father agreed and became Eddie's attorney, friend, and confidant. Unfortunately, my father could never convince me in my childhood of Eddie's greatness, even after forcing me to listen to thousands of hours of his music (granted, he would play Eddie Fisher in [...]

Entre sus grandes clásicos se encuentran "Thinking Of You" , "Wish You Were Here" , "Lady [...]
Eddie Fisher, native Philadelphian, graduate of South Philadelphia High, scandalous ex-husband of Elizabeth Taylor, and most of all golden-throated '50s crooner died on Wednesday . In June, Noise Narc's Material Lives posted about her father , a Philadelphian himself, and their musical taste: "I've also developed a taste for most of his favorite things: 50s cinema, black licorice, food, dancing, and 50s music (although I prefer Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, and Elvis, and while he likes them a lot, he prefers Eddie Fisher, Joni James, Tony Bennett, and Sinatra)." Given [...]

Filed under: News , R.I.P. Pop singer Eddie Fisher , the US's most successful male singer between 1950 and 1954 and father of actress Carrie Fisher , passed away at his Los Angeles, Calif. home on Wednesday night, Sept. 22, after complications arose following hip surgery. He was 82. Although his later career was overshadowed by high-profile but ultimately doomed marriages to actresses Debbie Reynolds , Elizabeth Taylor and Connie Stevens, in his prime the [...]

Bob James - El Verano Kicking off summer 2010 with this bringing-tears-to-my-eyes jam originally posted on bumrocks in Feb. 2007. Featuring a delayed snare drum hit at 2:26, one of my favorite rare funk tropes. For another example of same, check the 1:58 mark (and following) in this .
This 1956 offering was the closest Eddie Fisher ever got to folk music. It was a cover of a simultaneous release of a now-forgotten group; Fisher had the hit. It was later covered by the Beach Boys. MP3 File
Coffee has a few traditional songs which appear each holiday. The Blob was the most recent and look for the entire Alice's Restaurant this Thanksgiving. To that list I add this song. It's tonight the clocks go back one hour. My friend had an old aunt who used to get up at two to set her clocks back the hour because, as she explained, that's when the papers said they change. A long road trip several week's back with all of the music programmed by my co-pilot introduced me to this gem: Eddie Fisher and the Next One Hundred Years I have been struggling to aptly describe this record so went poking around online...here is what Muze has to say: "Early 1970s jazz-funk, from a little-known guitarist who uses wah-wah pedal and post-psychedelic textures on an instrumental album that carries echoes of both early Funkadelic...and the Mahavishnu Orchestra's more pastoral moments...Eddie Fisher's fresh approach avoids both rock and jazz [...]

Eddie Fisher: Brain Strain [1977] from the classic Hot Lunch , on the Stang label Eddie plays all the instruments on this, so it's safe to say that God Made Eddie Funky. One of the things I love, along with the great clavinet part, is the snare drum syncopation near the end. The snare hits come one 16th note after the 2 and the 4. It reminds me of Al Foster's work on Agharta and Pangaea . See here for a bio [...]
