Live: Cabinet of Wonders

Live: Cabinet of Wonders Attending the Cabinet of Wonders is one of the smartest things you can do in New York City and definitely one of my favorites. Created by Wesley Stace (aka John Wesley Harding) , the Cabinet features his friends in music, literature, and comedy. And believe me, he has pretty amazing friends. Located at the beautiful City Winery , these shows are my one opportunity to feel like a classy grownup. This weekend's sold out Cabinet was pretty spectacular, featuring music from John Wesley Harding , Spinto Band , Punch Brothers , [...]

J Mascis Covers Edie Brickell on 7″

J Mascis Covers Edie Brickell on 7″ J Mascis (of course of Dinosaur Jr fame) has a great new vinyl 73 of his cover of Edie Brickell and New Bohemians' "Circle." J's been playing "Circle" at shows during the past year or so and it's become a big audience favorite. J kinda reminds us what a cool tune it was to start with. It's to be released next Tuesday, November 22nd. You can order the vinyl 73 from Sub Pop right here.

J Mascis – I've Been Thinking

J Mascis – I've Been Thinking Tweet J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. fame is the one on the right. (The one on the left is a bear). He's written a lovely tune called I've Been Thinking , and here it is: That's splendid isn't it? I love the guitar. It reminds me of Nico 's These Days . Which is always a good thing. I've Been Thinking is the flipside of [...]

Edie Brickell: Edie Brickell / The Gaddabouts: The Gaddabouts

The Gaddabouts - Gonna Hold On
Twin releases from singer-songwriter Edie Brickell, demonstrating that a certain kind of folk-pop still has life. You've got in your lap two new albums of material by Edie Brickell. You remember her because, as part of the New Bohemians, she had a jangly-gentle hit in the late 1980s with "What I Am", and because she married Paul Simon in 1992. You'll put them on and they'll be pleasant and fine and... What were we discussing again? Oh, yeah, the new Edie Brickell albums. There is a certain kind of tuneful folk-pop...

Video: J Mascis Covers Edie Brickell

Video: J Mascis Covers Edie Brickell In addition to performing cuts off his latest LP, Several Shades of Why , Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis has been covering Edie Brickell & New Bohemians' 1988 hit "Circle" along stops on recent solo acoustic tours. On paper, the Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars single might seem like an unusual choice of cover, but when Mascis sings this tender take among his own unplugged tunes of late — such as in the Pitchfork session above — [...]

Watch: J Mascis In Troubadour Mode Playing Edie Brickell's "Circle"

J Mascis somewhat ragged version of Edie Brickell's 'Circle'

Set My Soul At Ease

Set My Soul At Ease It was during season 14 of Saturday Night Live that I first heard of Edie Brickell. I watched every episode religiously that year, so that I could return on Monday to the first of many Algebra classes I had failed and re-hash the entire episode with Mike Popowski. We would roll in the aisles laughing about Giant Business Man, Church Chat, Girl Watchers, Sweeney Sisters, The Anal Retentive Chef, Hans and Franz, Pat Stevens, eventually Wayne's World, then to close out the season the sketch that would absolutely kill - Toonces! Then there were the "commercials." [...]

Hot in Nashville: Grimey's Top Selling Albums (Jan. 10-16)

Cage the Elephant tops this week's countdown of the top selling albums (both vinyl & CD lists) at Grimey's New & Preloved Music in Nashville.

The Gaddabouts - The Gaddabouts

Make it a double for fans of singer/songwriter Edie Brickell as the former New Bohemian frontwoman, wife of Paul Simon and infrequent solo artist returns with two (count 'em) albums this month. The first, an extraordinarily good self-titled solo album arrived just this week. The second, a decade-long project with veteran drummer and producer Steve Gadd, in-demand bassist Pino Paladino (John Mayer Trio) and renowned Brit guitarist Andy Fairweather Low (Eric Clapton), The Gaddabouts' eponymous debut arrives January 25. Pop/jazz with a folksy 70's laid-back vibe, the project doesn't scale the heights of Brickell's [...]

Edie Brickell Brings Different 'Personalities' to Solo Album and the Gaddabouts

Edie Brickell Brings Different 'Personalities' to Solo Album and the Gaddabouts Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Best known for her work in the New Bohemians, Edie Brickell is returning this month with a double dose of music: Her third solo album, simply tilted 'Edie Brickell' and an LP with her new band, the Gaddabouts, a collaboration with prominent session drummer Steve Gadd. It's great news for fans of Brickell's voice, which rings with the same clarity as it did back in the '80s and '90s, but what exactly [...]

Edie Brickell and Paul Simon Considering an 'Old-Fashioned' Duets Album

Edie Brickell and Paul Simon Considering an 'Old-Fashioned' Duets Album Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive As far as endurance and quality goes, the marriage of Edie Brickell and Paul Simon is certainly one of rock's more endearing relationships. For fans of either of these artists, a duets record would surely be something of interest. Speaking with Spinner, Brickell didn't scoff at the idea when we presented it. In fact, it seems that it could actually happen. "We have been talking more [...]

Edie Brickell - Edie Brickell

Busy Edie Brickell . In a "feast or famine" kind of way, the former frontperson for early 90's breakout band The New Bohemians (and the "what I am is what I am" hit) is back with not just one but TWO new projects (more on her stint with The Gaddabouts, due January 25, soon). The beautifully crafted January 11 solo album Edie Brickell is the singer/songwriter's first full-length recording since the 2006 NB reunion album Stranger Things (not counting the excellent Heavy Circles '08 collaboration with stepson Harper Simon) and has been [...]

Leftovers (Songwriting) -> The Winter Months: Air Of December

Leftovers (Songwriting) -> The Winter Months: Air Of December Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians: Air of December [ purchase ] A fluid, dreamy also-ran from Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, Air of December doesn't just provide an unusually mellow kick-off to a week of songs whose titles mention December, January, or February. It also speaks to the apocryphal origin story of the band, which involves Edie wandering up onto a bar stage to join the local folk-rock band New Bohemians on a whim, floating improvisational lyrics over their long instrumentals and proving herself worthy [...]

The Gaddabouts - featuring Edie Brickell, Steve Gadd, Pino Palladino Edie Brickell has joined Steve Gadd, Pino Palladino and Andy Fairweather-Low to launch a new band project aptly named The Gaddabouts . The group's forthcoming debut will be released January 2011 and is composed of material written by Brickell over the past decade as well as songs written with the band in the studio the very day of recording. Edie Brickell & New Bohemians//What I Am

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians//What I Am Thinking about Paul Simon made me think about Edie Brickell (whom he married in 1992 and has three kids with). I got so so into this album ( Shooting Rubber Bands at the Stars ) sometime in high school. I think I can actually remember rocking out to it on my discman. The whole thing is oozing with late-80s/early-90s cheese and sincerity, but of course you couldn't help but fall in a dated kind of love that's still nice to return to periodically (like all your favorite episodes of My So-Called Life , especially that one featuring [...]

Cover Wars: Moonage Daydream Edition

Cover Wars: Moonage Daydream Edition Moonage Daydream was first released as a single in 1971 by Arnold Corns (one of David Bowie's pseudonyms), and was later released in 1972 on the album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars . In The Words and Music of David Bowie, James E. Perone writes, Bowie's vocal melody and arrangement in the song's chorus sections also closely resemble Elton John's contemporary work (notably "Tiny Dancer"), although "Moonage Daydream" includes enough of a touch of heavy metal-style-electric guitar and percussion in [...]

Cover Wars: A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall Edition

Cover Wars: A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall Edition Navigating traffic on the way to Phish at Jones Beach last Friday, myself and four friends in the car started naming a bunch of great "rain" related Phish songs that could be played in honor of the impending weather. They didn't play any of our ideas. Though I did take away my next selection for CW and that is this song off of the 1963 album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan . Every webpage out there supplying information on this song is quick to point out that the structure of the lyrics [...]
