Jazz Fest month is officially upon us. What the annual sweaty groove gala lacks in web design, it makes up for in booking. And let's not get started on the late-night lineups. And so begins our Jazz Fest preview series, featuring a track every day or four from some of the acts we have circled [...] • Facebook • Twitter • Delicious • Digg • StumbleUpon • Add to favorites • Email • RSS

I don't know if the correct term is "blessed," "graced," or "honored," but I felt all of the above when guest DJ Wyndham's funky mix landed in my inbox this month. I can think of no more fitting of a mix in light of Don Cornelius' recent passing. I know you all got soul, so be sure to enjoy these Super Low Prices. February 2012 Mix - "Super Low Prices" guest mix by DJ Wyndham 01 Paul Nero - This Is Soul (1970) [...]

Awesome trailor, Edwin Starr wrote the title track for this movie. Great ska funk remix by Tenoshi of Edwin Starr's 25 Miles I'll post tomorrow.
Veteran guitarist Dennis Coffey returns with his 14th album release.
This would've made a killer viral for Johnnie Walker , not to mention a rights nightmare. • • • • MORE SUPERCUTS: Supercut: We're Not in Kansas Anymore Caged Beast: Nicolas Cage Loses His Shit I Am: 250 Movie Character Intros Watch: Every Pickup Line from Mad Men Watch: The 100 Greatest Movie Insults of All Time [...]

Guitarist Dennis Coffey is a legend. As a member of the Funk Brothers, Coffey played on countless classic track for the Motown label, The Temptations' "Cloud Nine", The Supremes "Somebody Will Be Together" (my personal favorite Supremes' tune), Edwin Starr's "War", etc. That is a serious resume. In April, the guitarist, as part of a self-titled LP, released "All Your Goodies Are Gone", a collaboration with fellow Detroit-native (via Ann Arbor) and b3sci fav Mayer Hawthorne. Here on this remix of "Goodies" by another b3sci fav Shigeto, the track gets a future soul run, complete with spacey synth and vibed [...]

You don't have to be a Hawk or a Dove to appreciate the sacrifice of those who have gone before. I'm looking forward to a documentary debuting on The History Channel tonight on The Battle of Gettysburg. I've seen documentaries that glossed over the Battle of Gettysburg, but I think we're getting a deeper dive tonight. It'll take my mine off the gastly cancellation of Chicago Code by Fox. They can keep all kinds of crappy entertainment going year after year (I'm talking to you Amazing Race) and yet Chicago Code gets the shortest of leashes. I still love you [...]
So this is pretty cool... in theory at least. Last week, the videogame Homefront was released (I haven't played it so I have no idea how it is, although I read some decent reviews), and yesterday, the makers of the game started giving away a FREE compilation of metal bands doing covers of war-appropriate songs, [...]

NOTE: I am including the link to write your Representative here and at the end of this post. Anyone that's known me for a while knows how strongly I feel about many issues and how readily I display my emotions on my sleeve. I've learned to temper it a bit the older I've gotten, but occasionally, it still overflows and comes out as pure anger. The events of Saturday, January 8th down in Tucson, Arizona are a good example of this. Now Representative Gabrielle Giffords is in critical condition, and six are dead. [...]

This is just such a lovely sentiment and sounds perfect on a warm, sunny friday. Edwin Starr - Oh How Happy

Remember hearing aboot a fussball player for Rangers who burnt his cheek after scrambled egg exploded on him? Or when Robbie Keane somehow injured himself by reaching for the TV remote? Well. Thank funk I'm not a well known fussball player. Both have happened to a certain ape I know. Along with a few more [...]

Here's a rather ill little beat tape from producer 6th Sense, who has dropped the second installment of It's A 6th Sense Beat Yo !! - a collection of musical concoctions which show the Bronx-based beatsmith's versatility. Now, let me clear something up before I go on. When I say booming, I don't mean straight up the middle boom-bap from start to finish. Because as it turns out, 6th is able to mix up tempos and styles with ease. For every hip hop beat of the more traditional variety (like his re-rub of De La [...]
My favorite songs are the ones you feel in your bones, the ones that bubble up effervescently with that passion which has to explode out your extremities in the form of claps, stomps, and other forms of bodily percussion. A few months ago, fellow blogger Adrian and I started knocking around the idea of a Stomp/Clap mix with all the best samples of these songs. This has been an absolute joy to assemble (with suggestions from you guys) and is the perfect late-Spring soundtrack. While everything outside is coming back to life, these songs [...]

ah the hidden treasures, lurking dusty behind shelves and in drawers and cupboards and shinyshinyboxes; in dvd cases, wrong cases, suitcases; used as bookmarks, balancing devices and in one case a stand for muppet toys. all these lovely treats hidden away for me to find as part of some elaborate logistical orwellian nightmare i call moving house. you know the book house of leaves ? you know the movie cube (and it's sequels (but not gleaming the cube))? that's my spare room. honest to christ. still haven't found my ted leo cd. have [...]
