Pop favourites  The Lightning Seeds , plus  Black Lips, Peter and Kerry  &  Sally Archer  will join the bill for this summer’s event. Riding high on the success of his eighth solo record, Scottish semi-legend Edwyn Collins turned in a compelling performance at London's Union Chapel last night . The Heartbreaks (they’re from Lancashire, the H is silent) make the point early on in their opening set, “All our favourite bands are from Glasgow except Bruce Springsteen.” The cartoonish four piece also demonstrate determination – a quality which we’re going to see a lot of tonight - for them it’s in carrying on the enduring influence of Hamburg-era Beatles, but for Edwyn Collins determination is a more serious business. Thirty-one years ago, Edwyn Collins released his debut album with post-punks Orange Juice , cutting his teeth into a career which has seen him become an alt-rock, if not near national, treasure. And here he is in 2013, performing '31 Years' for Best Fit, every bit as intriguing a live performer as back then. Collins' latest album,  Understated  was released on 25 March. Thanks to Kyle , we have a full slate of Scottish music-related docs on the schedule for this weekend. We get things off on the good foot with this television doc about Postcard Records. Postcard was a Glasgow-based independent record label founded by Alan Horne & Edwyn Collins in 1979, as a vehicle for Orange Juice and Josef K releases. The task of assessing the various musics of Edwyn Collins when dislocated from the man himself is, perhaps inevitably, an intensely problematic one. The onetime Orange Juice songsmith suffered from a debilitating double brain haemorrhage back in early 2005, after which he set about reacquainting his body with the abilities so many of us now take for granted. Those of being able to read, write, write music and even walk, and though he could quite feasibly have been forgiven for wallowing in pitiful misery forevermore, he's never even so much as seemed to have done so. All four of Orange Juice's Polydor era albums are being reissued on LP for Record Store Day 2013. The seminal Scottish post-punk/pop band's albums -- You Can't Hide Your Love Forever (1982), Rip It Up (1982), Texas Fever (1984), and The Orange Juice (1984) -- set the tone for much of the British pop wave of the 80s. I've decided to wrap the most recent three singles together in one posting to being the series to an end. Part of the reason being that they came on plain brown sleeves, differentiated only by the labels being either bright yellow, green or blue. That onetime OJ crooner Edwyn Collins should return warbling: "Too bad/ That's sad/ I can't stay/ Another day with you" over a stereotypically effervescent, if abnormally soulful stomp is somewhat strange, given the heroic efforts over these past seven or eight years of longstanding partner, Grace Maxwell. From the summer of 2008. I'm not a huge fan of the a-side which is of course the ttrack after which the 2007 LP was named. The b-side is however a hugely significant bit of music as it was the first completely new song written and recorded by Edwyn after his recovery from the two brain haemorrages.
