The Morning After: Edwyn Collins

The Morning After: Edwyn Collins Riding high on the success of his eighth solo record, Scottish semi-legend Edwyn Collins turned in a compelling performance at London's Union Chapel last night . With a set that drew from this year's Understated album with some old favourites thrown in, Collins brought the supportive (seated) full house to their feet more than once. The new material - including standout single 'Dilemma' - was bolstered by an appearance from Collins' son William (who also performed as support with his own band Bullies ). [...]

Preview: Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, 2nd-12th May

Preview: Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, 2nd-12th May This year's Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival will take place in a variety of Belfast venues next month; and over eleven days, the 14th CQAF will stage music, comedy, spoken word and visual arts. We're going to focus on the festival's musical elements, and with the bill boasting old favourties such as Dexys and Adam Ant as well as a truly eclectic mix young and unknown talent, there should be something for anyone who finds themselves at the festival. There's even a guy covering Nick Cave if you fancy it. Thursday, 2nd May [...]

Live Reviews: Edwyn Collins, ABC, Glasgow

Photo: Michael Gallacher Edwyn Collins is a bit of a hero in this town. The Heartbreaks (they’re from Lancashire, the H is silent) make the point early on in their opening set, “All our favourite bands are from Glasgow except Bruce Springsteen.” The cartoonish four piece also demonstrate determination – a quality which we’re going to see a lot of tonight - for them it’s in carrying on the enduring influence of Hamburg-era Beatles, but for Edwyn Collins determination is a more serious business. Recovering steadily from the two brain haemorrhages he suffered in [...]

Watch Edwyn Collins in session for Best Fit

Edwyn Collins performs 31 Years for The Line of Best Fit
Thirty-one years ago, Edwyn Collins released his debut album with post-punks Orange Juice , cutting his teeth into a career which has seen him become an alt-rock, if not near national, treasure. And here he is in 2013, performing '31 Years' for Best Fit, every bit as intriguing a live performer as back then. Collins' latest album,  Understated  was released on 25 March. Watch his Best Fit session above.

Movie of the Week - Out There: Postcard Records

Movie of the Week - Out There: Postcard Records Thanks to Kyle , we have a full slate of Scottish music-related docs on the schedule for this weekend. We get things off on the good foot with this television doc about Postcard Records. Postcard was a Glasgow-based independent record label founded by Alan Horne & Edwyn Collins in 1979, as a vehicle for Orange Juice and Josef K releases. The label's motto was "The Sound of Young Scotland", a parody/tribute to the Motown motto, "The sound of young America." Although short-lived, Postcard was to prove a [...]

Edwyn Collins – Understated (Analogue Enhanced Digital)

A British Great. Edwyn Collins, Understated.

The task of assessing the various musics of Edwyn Collins when dislocated from the man himself is, perhaps inevitably, an intensely problematic one. The onetime Orange Juice songsmith suffered from a debilitating double brain haemorrhage back in early 2005, after which he set about reacquainting his body with the abilities so many of us now take for granted. Those of being able to read, write, write music and even walk, and though he could quite feasibly have been forgiven for wallowing in pitiful misery forevermore, he's never even so much as seemed to have done so. And so [...]

Edwyn Collins - Understated

Edwyn Collins - Understated Disclaimer: I worship at the altar of Edwyn Collins . Orange Juice are like the Holy Ghost of my blessed trinity. 'Girl Like You' is a hymn. His West Heath Studios are probably my place of pilgrimage, if you want to stretch it that far. I saw him play - with Teenage Fanclub as his backing band - at All Tomorrow's Parties a few years ago, and it's the best gig I've ever been to. He can do now wrong in my eyes. Well, not quite. To be perfectly honest, his solo work had been going [...]

Record Store Day 2013: Orange Juice LP Reissues

Record Store Day 2013: Orange Juice LP Reissues All four of Orange Juice's Polydor era albums are being reissued on LP for Record Store Day 2013. The seminal Scottish post-punk/pop band's albums -- You Can't Hide Your Love Forever (1982), Rip It Up (1982), Texas Fever (1984), and The Orange Juice (1984) -- set the tone for much of the British pop wave of the 80s. Led by Edwyn Collins, Orange Juice are a hugely under-acknowledged influence on everyone from The Smiths to Belle and Sebastian. More importantly, their albums, and the band's refreshingly open-minded approach to music making, hold [...]

Domino to reissue Orange Juice LP's on vinyl

Domino to reissue Orange Juice LP's on vinyl Orange Juice, original line up, by David Corio As reported this morning by Slicing Up Eyeballs , Domino Records will be reissuing all four studio albums by Orange Juice on vinyl for Record Store Day on April 20! This is some of my all time favorite music and has made me happy for years...ask anyone who knows me. Now is your chance to pick up brand new, (hopefully) reasonably priced, copies of these classics...especially their debut, You Can't Hide Your Love Forever . All four [...]

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Parts 17-19)

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Parts 17-19) I've decided to wrap the most recent three singles together in one posting to being the series to an end. Part of the reason being that they came on plain brown sleeves, differentiated only by the labels being either bright yellow, green or blue. But the main reason is that they collectively form the story of Edwyn's post-illness and demonstrate how much of a team effort it has become. I've written before about the grit and determination of Grace Maxwell , Edwyn's wife and manager, without whom [...]

Understated, though never inconsequential. Edwyn Collins.

That onetime OJ crooner Edwyn Collins should return warbling: "Too bad/ That's sad/ I can't stay/ Another day with you" over a stereotypically effervescent, if abnormally soulful stomp is somewhat strange, given the heroic efforts over these past seven or eight years of longstanding partner, Grace Maxwell. The two words to compose the name of his wife-cum-manager were one of only four phrases he was able to utter having suffered a second cerebral haemorrhage back in '05: affirmative and negative linguistic lynchpins yes and no were of course also included in Collins' somewhat restrictive [...]

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 16)

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 16) From the summer of 2008. I'm not a huge fan of the a-side which is of course the ttrack after which the 2007 LP was named. The b-side is however a hugely significant bit of music as it was the first completely new song written and recorded by Edwyn after his recovery from the two brain haemorrages. It's a short but poignant number which features some lovely guitar work from Roddy Frame . mp3 : Edwyn Collins - Home [...]
