THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 15)

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 15) In February 2005, Edwyn Collins suffered a stroke which left him seriously ill in a London hospital. He was in a coma and required major brain surgery to stop internal bleeding which threatened to kill him. His recovery was hampered by him contracting MRSA, but in the fullness of time, he got back home, and thanks to some fantastic TLC from his partner Grace, their son Will and many other members of his family and his close friends, not to mention many hours of therapeutic treatment, he made a remarkable recovery which allowed him to get back on stage again [...]

It’s Chic Co. Time

Jeez! Plain Or Pan used to be all about Beta Band outtakes and multiple versions of La's demos, the odd foosty soul survivor and long-forgotten obscurios by long-forgotten oddballs. It still is, of course, but just not today. I have a long-time love of disco . To these ears, it doesn't matter that it's considered kinda naff and uncool, which, when placed next to any amount of other musical bits n' pieces, it may well be. In the mid-late 70s, when straddled by the ugly, oiky twin-headed monster [...]

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 13)

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 13) Not long after the Bernard/Edwyn release came the first bit of new music from Mr Collins in four years. It's a strange release this one. Available only on 7" vinyl at a time when hardly anyone was releasing new music via that medium - and when they did it was usually as an add-on to what was available via CD - so it's no surprise the 45 didn't trouble the charts. mp3 : Edwyn Collins - The Beatle$ Luckily for fans (and obsessives!!) the track was made available a short [...]

Crafty Velvet. John Cale, Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood.

Crafty Velvet. John Cale, Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood. John Cale , OBE is of a dying breed. One composed of musicians to have lived, without dying, the long since glorified years of the early '70s. The almost grotesquely romanticised late '60s, even. Not only that, but he played a fundamental part in the founding of NYC's most preeminent band of the time. To his testament, he sought pastures new and ones rather less littered with dirtied syringes, one envisages, than those around which The Velvet Underground crept having departed back in '68. As such, he may continue to lead a fruitful recording career ( Shifty Adventures In Nookie [...]

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 12)

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 12) I've written about this song before, so I'm taking the lazy way out and repeating the post from 10 January 2011:- Bernard Butler and Edwyn Collins had worked together previous to the release of this single. Back in 1995, they co-wrote some material which made it onto b-sides of Edwyn singles and there was the fact that Bernard liked to use Edwyn's studios for much of his production work. They also appeared together on a few music [...]

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 11)

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 11) A month after Adidas World had been unleashed on a rather apathetic record-buying public, Setanta Records put out a very strange release in November 1997. It was almost as if it was rounding up a bundle of remixes destined for b-sides for singles that would have been released if the hits had kept on coming. For years I had no idea that this record actually existed until I saw it under a listings of Edwyn's solo releases. [...]

Edwyn Collins: New album & film news

Edwyn Collins: New album & film news As the BBC's 6 Music recently reported , Edwyn Collins has started discussing his next album which will be called Understated , and will feature guest Richard Hawley. The current release date is sometime in January 2013 which is probably just for the UK. I'll be surprised if it sees a US release before the end of the calendar winter season. Collins is also involved in the making of a promising looking film called In Your Voice, In Your Heart , and it's the story of Edwyn’s journey back from his life threatening illness [...]

Lucas Rezende :: Kimbra - Edwyn Collins (Remixes)

Lucas Rezende :: Kimbra - Edwyn Collins (Remixes) Some housyness for your weekend? Thought so. Here are 2 first-rate remixes from Brazilian producer Lucas Rezende . Taking Kimbra's " Settle Down " exactly to where you can just forget about everything that matters for 5 minutes, but also giving it away for free ? I admire him tackling " A Girl Like You " by Edwyn Collins , not an easy track to get up to 125.0 bpm and still get it sounding just as smooth as the original. Both of these will surely put [...]

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 10)

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 10) So, having gotten himself noticed with The Magic Piper of Love in the summer of 97 it made perfect commercial sense for Edwyn Collins to select a really catch commercial sounding track as the follow-up. Why he chose Adidas World remains a mystery..... There was no way with the multiple mentions of the German-based leisure-wear company (and a number of its rivals) that radio station controllers [...]

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 9)

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 9) Nothing was made available between February 96 and July 97 but it was a period when Edwyn Collins was busy producing loads of other acts. The single that climbed into the charts, reaching #32, was already well known to loads of folk thanks to it appearing over the closing credits of the movie Austin Powers, International Man Of Mystery which had been released earlier in the year. Infectiously catchy if a wee bit annoying after too [...]

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 8)

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 8) The big hit had finally come Edwyn's way. He looked as if he would be financially secure for life on the royalties from A Girl Like You . Keen to build on his success, Edwyn penned another cracking single that was tailor-made for radio. One that celebrated Northern Soul. One that was every bit a dance classic as so many from that genre.....and ultimately it went on to enjoy as much chart success as the very best of Northern Soul....in other words it flopped. [...]

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 7)

THE SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF EDWYN COLLINS (Part 7) With a song this good....it was only a matter of time. ZOP001 had been the catalogue number for the Expressly Yours EP back in October 1994 with its main track being A Girl Like You . It had stalled at #42 in the charts. ZOP002 had been the catalogue number for If You Could Love Me back in March 1995 with one of its b-sides being [...]
