We have once again invited some folks whose opinions we trust to share their favorite releases of 2011. Check out the artists on these list and the folks recommending them (most of whom are in bands of their own). You should be able to purchase each record through the attached link or visit your local independent record store and buy it there. We've already given you two excellent tracks from psych-folkies Efren's new album, Rise On Up And Melt . Now we have a third, and this time it is the seven minute mini-epic of Mr Greene . Efren is led by Scott Low who fell into a dark marital separation as the record was being recorded. A new outlook on the album came about. Though not the original intention, Rise On Up And Melt became a songwriter's story of lost faith in love and trust. Get a copy [...]

By Matt Jarrard Efren's new LP Rise On Up and Melt is a clear sign the Athens based band has found its footing. Evident in these 10 tracks is the over 100 dates that the band has spent on the road since releasing their EP Al w ays Been A Bleeder just last year. Also evident is the marital strife front man/songwriter Scott [...]

mp3: Efren - "Like A Coat" somewhere i heard the new bon iver is overrated, haven't heard it myself, so who knows(?) but man, likin this new efren track. efren is from athens, georgia you know they have good music comin outta that place and efren is no different, chalk this up to the likes of great lake swimmers or iron and wine, maybe with some more psychedelic elements, but no one knows that in "like a coat," this is all tender and nice, i prefer this type of bedroom pop. efren is [...]

Efren started as the solo project of Scott Low, but tomorrow, the Athens, Ga., outfit is releasing its first full-band album. Rise On Up And Melt (Slo Pro), the follow-up to last year's Always Been A Bleeder EP, is informed by the dissolution of Low's marriage. Though he and his bandmates all have jazz backgrounds, [...]

On June 28th Efren will release their first full length, full band album, Rise On Up And Melt . Efren began as Scott Low, who wrote and recorded the debut album Thunder and Moan in the spring of 2009. With friends Low performed the songs live and the band was born. Playing almost 100 shows in the first year and recording and releasing a full band EP Always Been a Bleeder , (see our original post here ) the band took the songs to stages across the southeast. Memorial Day is meant to be the holiday in which we do without the grand gestures associated with other holidays, like stuffing our faces, decorating our homes and yards with over-sized representations of capitalist deities like Santa Claus, and exchanging gifts we neither need or want (unless it's a Nintendo 3Ds). But when it comes right down to it, Memorial Day is just another excuse to have a day off in the early dawning of summer and to sleep in and, once more, fill our faces with the dead, burned flesh of animals. If you are the type, however, to [...]

Let me be candid. This is not a venue where I usually recommend seeing a band. It's a cool place to play pool and get a nice brew, but it isn't Atlanta's finest music room. However, Athen's swamp folksters, Efren , make it to town too infrequently to pass on this. I caught them late last year at Wonderroot and they impressed with their southern songcraft and precise musical execution. They are tight, well-rehearsed, and well worth your time.

For Flagpole : Efren Always Been A Bleeder Slo Pro In a quiet eddy where gothic Americana, psychedelia and straight-up country swirl together, Scott Leon-O'Day of local band Efren sits holding a guitar. Armed with only his breathy voice, he sings of the hand he's been dealt ("Check It Down") and watches the brackish waters, at times assisted by a trio of instrumentalists...[ Read more ]

Full disclosure: I had ambitions to write more about the August 17 My Morning Jacket show in Chicago. I felt like I had 1500 words in me on the show and the experience. Generally, I like the opportunity that the blog affords me to (in the words of Cousin Marty) organize the experience through writing. Then I sat down to bang this one out. The show stands burning in my brain as a perfect event, almost too pristine to capture with something as ephemeral as an "internet blog post." I saw one [...]
