Lynn's straightforward songs and Jewell's sly singing style meet in the middle on this tribute. Loretta Lynn came out of Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, and hit the country music charts like a lightning strike. Her outspoken, no-nonsense songs refused to shrink away from topics that female singers of her time were expected to avoid. "Fist City" and "You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man)", for example, hold obvious hints of danger, while songs like "Another Man Loved Me Last Night" might raise a few eyebrows even now. Eilen Jewell revisits...
This is from Queen of the Minor Key, her newest album.
Eilen Jewell - Boston-based Americana singer/songwriter is back with her fourth album, a generous and inspired collection of spunky country-meets-roots/rock produced by Jewell and her band that just happens to be one of the nicest surprises of the year... the successor to Jewell's 2009 release Sea of Tears also follows up her fronting the Butcher Holler tribute album to Loretta Lynn last year // Release : Queen of the Minor Key (Signature Sounds) // Sounds like : Alt-country just doesn't get jazzier than this...Jewell possesses a glistening voice able [...]

It took her three solo cds and one Loretta Lynn covers/tribute album, but Eilen has finally admitted what the rest of us already knew; she, indeed, is the queen of the minor key. Eilen is back with her fifth studio album and it continues to perfect that 50′s rock meets surf rock-Americana sound we've all grown to expect and love from her. It's another 14 tracks that are perfect for damned near any mood. Early mornings, late nights, sober, buzzed, half-drunk, fully-drunk, God's own drunk…it doesn't matter, Eilen's got you taken care of. As I said when I wrote about [...]

As stated before, The Family Straw recently moved from PA to MN (technically WI for now - MN soon). The Duchess and I traveled about 3500 miles in less than a week. During all that traveling, Eilen Jewel's latest album helped me along. Queen of the Minor Key is a 14 song kick in the pants. A 14 song blast of love, lose and lust. Eilen's sound is a throwback to a simpler time, when the car you drove defined you. When you could get a soda at a soda fountain. When white tee shirts help packs of [...]
..and inspires aimless floating. After listening to "Space", I was confused, intrigued, and a little upset. You can't just take someone to space without planning activities; bad idea. read more
Who's brilliant? Eilen (pronounced "EE-lin") Jewell, that's who! While Jewell is more of a quirky country tinged, '60s rock/bluesy artist, she gets her Billie Holiday shine on in "Only One". With an unmatched focus on environmental sustainability, Pickathon Music Festival 's only vice is some wonderful noise-pollution for neighboring Portland, Oregon. Taking place in Happy Valley, OR between August 5th and 7th, the indie-roots festival bypasses the normal list of festival regulars , to establish an eclectic family-friendly bill of banjo pickers, acoustic outfits, soul legends, and other bluegrass greats. For its 13th installment , Pickathon already tapped Mavis Staples, Bill Callahan, Lee Fields & The Expressions, plus the Fruit Bats and others, and are now completing the lineup with 11 new acts - pushing the [...]

Boise-raised and Boston-based Eilen Jewell has released the first single Queen of the Minor Key from her upcoming album of the same name. This simultaneously languorous and strong-willed country-blues number is the stuff of smoky, vintage jazz clubs and peeling, wall-papered honky-tonks. With a burnished voice lingering somewhere between Billie Holiday and Neko Case, Eilen Jewell's aching vocals are pure, country-gospel, box-car soul. The song Queen of the Minor Key immediately transports you to the haunting, twisted, timeless world of a Jim Jarmusch or David Lynch film, with a Chris Isaak-flavored rockabilly number be-boppin' in the background. It's the [...]
