All day today, we're playing celebrating Robert Smith's (April 21) by playing your favorite songs by The Cure and other goth favorites. As a genre and a style, "goth" is pretty easy to stereotype (see The Damned's "Grimly Fiendish" for a particularly campy version), but the truth is its influence spreads far and wide. Goth is a thread that connects industrial bands like Einstürzende Neubauten to romantic new wavers like Gene Loves Jezebel (though you'd never find their fans in the same room!) through all manner of dark if not mopey music. Gathered here you'll find indisputable Goth pioneers like [...]
By Robert Ham Movie - Decoder (Muscha, 1984) What's on Network Awesome today? To understand the power that a film like Decoder can wield over the people watching it, try this experiment: turn down the brightness on your computer screen until it is completely blank (or for the low-tech version, just shut your eyes while the video plays). Even if you don't have a working knowledge of the German language, the [...]

PS11 | środa | czwartek | piątek | sobota | niedziela | THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH (San Miguel) Do ostatniej chwili zastanawialiśmy się czy wybrać Cale'a grającego „Paris 1919" czy Mattsona grającego swoje. Zdecydowały względy kolekcjonerskie – Cale'a widzieliśmy już we Wrocławiu, Szwed umknął nam na OFFie. Wybór z wejścia okazał się dobry, bo Wysoki okazał się niezwykle sympatycznym młodzieńcem, bardzo umiejętnie ogniskującym uwagę słuchaczy i przenoszącym swoje *proste utwory na gitarę* na największą scenę festiwalu. Najpiękniej wypadły piosenki ze świetnego [...]

Barcelona - Einsturzende Neubauten . For those of us who don't speak German, it's not a band name that rolls off the tongue easily. Nor are they an easy band to listen to. Pioneers in the genres of noise and industrial, I went into this show expecting something pretty extreme. Actually, what I was expecting was some dour, overly serious Germans making a heck of a lot of noise. What I got was noisy, yes, but also rather tuneful at times and not terribly serious at all. Frontman Blixa Bargeld was actually quite hilarious, showing off his sense of [...]

"The concert performance (4. November 2004) on this session was filmed at the Palast der Republik in Berlin, the former Parliament building and symbol of the no longer existing DDR (East Germany). The Palast der Republik has since been torn down in order to make space for a new building in the location of the old Royal City Palace. The Neubauten found the steel skeleton of the ruins of the Palast a congenial location for their architectural-musical fanatasies and field studies. Accompanied by a 100 member choir, recruited from the supporters of the www.neubauten.org Internet project, they played in and [...]

Something about American heavy metal of the '802s manages to be comical and quaint. Sure, it doesn't have the hair or the spandex of the earlier glam metal period, but there is the whiff of Beavis and Butthead about the new Metal that came grinding out of the US in the mid-eighties. Metallica – Battery Slayer – Angel of Death Saint Vitus – Clear Windowpane Einsturzende Neubauten – Halber Mensch Metallica are the über-thrash metal band. Their po-faced, earnest view of life, without any glint of sunlight found in the hardcore [...]
Happy Super Bowl Sunday, you super people! I hope your team won, if you're a sports guy who likes a certain sports team. Otherwise, as we say in New York (about the Mets) better luck next year! Speaking of which, pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training soon. I don't have anything else to say really, so I guess I'll stop stalling and get to this week's mix tape. RULES for uninitiated noobs : I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever [...]
The German experimentalists of Einstürzende Neubauten have a thing against buildings; their name approximately translates to "collapsing new buildings" (though it should be noted that this is generally attributed to a distaste for modernity, rather than any terrorist leanings). Over their now 30-year history, the group has gained a reputation as one of the forefathers of the industrial movement, their use of custom-made scrap metal percussion and power-tool-as-instrument aesthetic (along with bands like Throbbing Gristle) establishing the sounds of generations of bands to come. Throughout those three decades, they've put out four compilations aimed at collecting different eras [...]
Concerts will start to dry up as we approach the Christmas season, but no need to panic yet. There's still some great stuff happening this week ("Edge" Christmas shows not withstanding): Superchunk Broken Social Scene w. At each stop on the tour, the band will performing for two nights, with one night being a traditional (if such a word can be used in connection with Einstürzende Neubauten) concert and the other being divided into three parts consisting of films and installation, a short concert comprised of material rarely played live, and performances from individual members. Einstürzende Neubauten ("collapsing new buildings" in English) was formed [...]
