I didn't do a lot of writing about music this year. I've been working on a large-scale writing project that's subsumed a lot of my free time and, frankly, I'd kept the music crit candle burning too brightly for too long. The wick, as they say, was growing short. But in between manic, protracted binges of of murky ambient, witchy dub and dark jazz -- the interstitial soundtrack to a

Artwork by Francesca Bonifacio Yesterday, we unveiled your picks for our 2012 Reader's Poll , and today we're continuing our year-end coverage by revealing our Honorable Mentions. 2012 was a great year for music, and it was tough to only choose 31 albums, so we made sure to include some picks that we enjoyed but didn't quite make it on our list . Be sure to come back to the site everyday for the rest of the week to see our Best EPs and Best Songs of 2012, along with our personal picks [...]
Following the death of Beastie Boys co-founder Adam Yauch, producer Tommie Sunshine made a heavy statement via Twitter : "I believe atrak is the only one who is truly capable to make the definitive beastieboys tribute." The statement not only sheds lights on the Fool's Gold co-founder's knowledge of hip-hop, developed during his time as an award-winning turntablist, but his ability to redefine that genre for a new generation of hip-hop heads. Although that tribute disc has yet to come to fruition, A-Trak is spreading his love of underground hip-hop with the lengthy Loosies collection. Curated alongside fellow Fool's [...]

ILLUSTRATION BY LYDIA CONKLIN Now that you’ve read through our top songs and records of the year, it’s time to take a look at the rest; the pop music, hip-hop, metal and punk that helped make such a great year. These records aren’t exactly orphans, most of them have gotten plenty of acclaim and even more sales, but still, they deserve their due. These are the 'Outliers' Records of the year, everything but our typical taste of indie and a whole lot of interesting. What exactly is 'Outliers'? Click [...]

"Don't call it a comeback" is usually a phrase uttered self-protectively by musicians who are very much coming back from some degree of obscurity. Dr. Dre wasn't exactly absent during the seven-year stretch between his first and second albums ("California Love," anybody?), but his 1999 sophomore release 2001 is littered with lines like "Ladies pay homage, but haters say Dre fell off/ How, nigga? My last album was The Chronic ." If he ever gets around to releasing Detox , it'll surely be stacked with similar "I never went away" rhetoric (and, undoubtedly, lyrics about headphones.) [...]

2012 was a great year for collaborations, and an even better year for surprises. The rising stars of rap, pop, and indie all worked together as we might have expected, but some of the best pairings took place in the form of odd couples. We saw some things we never would have expected, and the year was better off for it. Here are some of our favorite unholy unions of the year. no lie i just finished something with @ psy_oppa and @ 2chainz the mayan calendar predicted this — dıpןo (@diplo) December 4, 2012 [...]

Top 10 Albums (no particular order) Kendrick Lamar: Good Kid, m.a.a.d. City "Swimming Pools (Drank)" Kendrick Lamar has the Outkast factor. I can listen to his songs, intently focusing on the lyrics while getting lost in the scenes he vividly describes, or I can zone out, not pay attention to what he’s saying and dance to the beat while singing along with the incredibly infectious hooks. GKMC feels like 3 Stacks and Big Boi [...]

2012...what a year of music. We got new releases from favorites such as Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and heard new favorites in Father John Misty, Nude Beach, Tanlines, and more. Last year Earbuddy celebrated one year of existence with the best 50 albums of 2011 . However, we've grown since [...]
We debated, we disagreed, we came up with our collective best 50 albums of 2012.
Here at Potholes, we love us some Nardwuar. I mean, who doesn't love the Human Serviette? He's probably the most well-known music journalist to geeks like me—and the other folks who scribble down digital thoughts on here. He's also capable of grounding most artists and making them realize it's a damn privilege to be talking to someone who's both knowledgeable and entertaining. Yeah, some of you hate his shtick, but you can't act like he hasn't surprised you with his deeper-than-fucking-Wikipedia smarts. Now, if only he could do another interview with Questlove—seriously, if you haven't watched it, [...]

Sirens by Nick Hook is the driving bass and dark beats that nightmares are made of, capable of conjuring your deepest, darkest fears. Demonic shadows dance across the canopy of a backyard campsite while a small child possessed delivers the prose of El-P and Rood, adding to the ominous lunacy of the scene. Here it is. My countdown of my favorite albums of 2012. Though it's not a surprising #1 choice...my number one surprises me...because I don't love the album. Anyway, you'll have to wait to see what that is...until then...it's time for your input. Every year I ask you, my readers, to give me your twenty best/favorite albums. The only rule...the album has to have been released in 2012.

Continuing from yesterday, here are the top ten selections for Bears and Bullets Top Albums Of 2012 : #10: Royal Headache - Royal Headache Two genre's effectively broke the mold to land on top this year; rap and garage punk. So to say one album effectively defined both is difficult. But among the glorious renderings that the [...]
