Despite a few kinks to be worked out, El Ten Eleven and Races put on a great show to kick off their tour at Oakland's New Parish.

Peter Hook got by with a little help from his friends last week when he brought his band Peter Hook & the Light through Los Angeles to perform two seminal albums by his first band, Joy Division. On Sept. 14 the Music Box, Hook and his band ripped through 19802s "Closer," with Perry Farrell and Moby lending guest vocals. L.A. experimental duo El Ten Eleven opened. After the debauchery of D.C. , I jumped on an Amtrak through the Chesapeake Bay of Maryland, the dense suburbia of Delaware and up through New Jersey (where my favorite Housewives live) into New York City. I met a good friend at Penn Station, where he took me back into the subway to his apartment on Bleeker St. in Greenwich Village, referred to as simply "The Village," because only a tourist would have to identify which one. The next couple days I explored. Times Square: tourist marketing hell. Central Park, big but kinda boring compared [...]

Raise your right hand in the air, put your left hand over your heart and repeat after me: "I love Indie Rock." If Indie Rock (particularly new Indie Rock) is something that truly tickles your pickle, then The Indie Sabbath has a present in store for you that will stimulate your senses in a new and tantalizing way every week. Sometimes we need a break from the everyday grind - the worship of a job you hate, your school which you despise and all those other systematic functions our society has been dragged in to. Let [...]

The role of a producer is often undesirable to many young musicians. The arrogance and pretentiousness among many in this niche leads them to believe their creative power is limitless, and so therefore their songs can speak volumes without sophisticated production and mastering. They eventually learn otherwise, but usually not until their music aspirations appear [...]

The Silver Lake Jubilee , the neighborhood festival that debuted last year with 50 bands on three stages (along with an army of food trucks and art exhibits), will be back at its Sunset Junction-adjacent locale May 21-22. The set-up, along Myra Avenue between Santa Monica and Sunset Boulevards, will be similar to last year's — as will the admission fee, $5. An announcement is expected later today. The music lineup probably won't be announced until after SXSW, but some of the acts I've heard are in the works are White Sea, Summer Darling, El [...]

Tape Tuesdays will be a biweekly feature on Sunset in the Rearview. I will be compiling a new playlist every other week, with a new theme each time. My advice: stream the music on MixPod, listen to the songs, and if you're a fan, put them together on your computer or iPod as a playlist. My shorter playlists are always better than the longer ones because they seem to have a consistent flow; larger playlists tend to get overpacked and diluted. Every tape will be short enough to fit on a single CD, so if you [...]

New Artist These days there is no shortage of two-man groups making significant music (e.g. MGMT, Black Keys, Death from Above 1979, etc.) The LA duo El Ten Eleven is no exception. Kristian Dunn and Tim Fogarty create intricately layered atmospheric post-rock through the use of a double neck guitar/bass, drums, and a plethora [...]
