El Vez and Los Straight Jackets do their best to stimulate the "Mexi-conomy" at this year's !Viva Christmas!

Every December I pull out one of my very favorite Christmas albums, Tis the Season for Los Straitjackets . Los Straitjackets , those guys who wear the Mexican wrestling masks and play killer surf guitar, made the perfect seasonal album earlier this decade: 13 short instrumentals in 32 minutes. The first video below is from a recent show in New York. El Vez , the Mexican Elvis impersonator, lends his vocals. [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News According to the Mayan calendar, the world will end in 2012, just in time for the next presidential election. With that in mind, El Vez , the self-styled "Mexican Elvis ," announced Saturday night at New York City's Bowery Ballroom the slogan he plans to make the centerpiece of his political campaign: "What have you got to lose?" Those words sum up the shtick of singer and conceptual artist Robert Lopez , the former Los Angeles punk rocker who created the El [...]
The world's premiere Spanish Elvis impresario brings the Christmas party to Atlanta

[Birthday cheers go out Sunday to Donovan, and I hope this abbreviated rundown isn't too late to inform your weekend plans:] Tonight: Grand Duchy , the musical collaboration between Black Francis and his wife Violet Clark, hits the Detroit Bar tonight behind last month's release of its debut "Petit Fours," a collection of endearingly off-kilter synth-pop. ... Huge benefit at Club Nokia tonight — the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis will be feted for his charity work, with the proceeds going to the [...]
The Band, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" I didn't know the historical roots of The Band's classic until I researched them for this list, and it gives this song about the end of the Civil War even greater impact than it had before. This version of the song comes from the remastered & expanded 4-disc boxed set of The Last Waltz that was released in 2002. El Vez, "Frida's Life Of Pain" El Vez isn't just the country's greatest Mexican Elvis impersonator and a [...]

For The Sake Of The Song will be out of the loop for a short while, as we´re busy moving house. Our new headquarters are only 5 minutes away as the crow flies, but it still means that everything - including my music collection and my trusted iMac - will have to be boxed up for a short while. So bear with me, dear reader. I´ll do my best to be back online asap. In the meantime, here are some songs with a Spanish flavour for you, as I´m glad I [...]
What's this? It's Public Image , isn't it? Hold on, wait, no. No, it's a Latino Elvis impersonator singing about the joys of Christmas to a bastardised PiL tune. Glad that's sorted. Now everything makes perfect sense. You see, there's always been a problem with Christmas music. Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy and charity and all that, yet the music that gets associated with the festival makes you want to burst your eardrums and accelerate along the pavements in a heavy vehicle. El Vez has the answer. [...]

I've said it a couple times already, but I haven't been really feeling the holiday spirit this year. It's not from a lack of trying or some halfhearted salvo in the War on Christmas (which seems to only exist in the heads of attention-starved culture warriors); it simply is , without any reason apart from these past weeks being so aflutter with other issues that I haven't had the time to stop and smell the balsam. Maybe I should whip up batch of gingerbread and queue up a playlist of some perennial holiday favorites -- like today's [...]

Well, the holiday season is back once again, so we'd thought we'd reload the RFC X-Mas 8-track once again this year...hope these sound just as good in your iPod as they do in our Germlin sports wagon's stereo deck. 99.9% of Christmas songs are absolute crap. So, as a public service to get you in the holiday spirit to consume this month, RFC is bringing you some of that .1% that don't completely suck. Warm up the chestnuts, crank up the iPod and enjoy! Program 1: Merry. [...]

Well. Here's two fellers you wouldn't normally expect to find side by side outside of free-form radio. But why the hell not? Gentleman Jim Reeves is a little too pop for some Country purist's liking. We here find him to perfectly acceptable. His laconic voice reminds us of another Mountain favorite, Dean Martin, not in sound but in approach. If that makes a lick of sense. There's room for
