Zeus - Zeus, the band, was born from the longtime friendship of Mike O'Brien and Carlin Nicholson, who were/are members of Broken Social Scene member Jason Collett's touring band. Also featuring Rob Drake and Neil Quin, the Canadian rock quartet just released their debut full-length, entitled Say Us , an accomplished first effort and a really fun rock 'n' roll record. Blending all sorts of pop-rock elements - from sharp, Strokes-esque riffs to the driving piano-pop of New Pornographers - these guys create an eclectic yet somehow still focused set of 12 tracks that [...]

A musician since the age of 3, Elaine Lachica first knew she wanted to be a singer when, as a teenager, she heard Liz Fraser sing "Blue Bell Knoll" by the Cocteau Twins. It was then she started songwriting, and she hasn't stopped since. I Think I Can See the Ocean is her third full-length, and her first label-backed album. The dream like quality to her music could stem from the fact that she does most of her songwriting shortly after waking in the morning, when she is most creative and open to abstract [...]

Elaine Lachica - "Tumbleweed" To think of this music in terms of visual representation: The piano is the tumbleweed, the rest is either the breeze blowing it along, or the empty, wide-open scenery. Lachica's voice is mannered but highly expressive, fluttering and contracting as the melody swirls around the contours of the chord structure. As much as this song has that quality of direct representation, it's also an odd, abstracted thing. Listening, I feel like trying to trace its lines, follow them around to find the beginning and the end, but I get lost somewhere, or my [...]

When I listen to Elaine Lachica , I can't help but think of Jessie Torrisi . Strike that - when I listen to Elaine Lachica, I can't help but think of her music in the same way I think of Jessie Torrisi's music . Clearly, Lachica's careful big city lounge sound is as different from Torrisi's earthy Texas swing, but both artists put out well-crafted and sincerely good and lovely songs, but in doing so keep things as indie legit as any other pitchfork darling of the week. That is, like Torrisi, Elaine puts out [...]
