With the Presidential election drawing in on a close, the list obligatory takes a closer look at songs about politicians. Shake a hand. Kiss a baby. Read the list. Regardless of your political leaning, it is impossible to avoid being annoyed by the constant coverage of politics at this point of a [...]

So, after a couple of slightly misnumbered podcasts - 245 coming after 243, and then 244 having to come after that to try and correct the mistake, hoping two wrongs might , if not make a right exactly, at least gloss over the original wrong somewhat - we are back on track with #246. In the right order and everything. There's no real theme to this week's podcast, although we have a fair bit of new stuff in there - some by The Walkmen, The Douglas Firs, The Spook School, Monster Island and a couple of others. [...]
It goes without saying that the fall mixtape is my favorite of the year. I've spent the last two weeks narrowing this down to what hopefully will be as rad to hear on your end as it is each time I listen through it on mine. Getting the closest friends, setting your destination for the [...]

Chalk this one up as one of the most bizarre collaborations you'll hear of in 2012 - but the bosses on the crosses Justice are working on the score for a musical of King Kong. Massive Attack are also involved, as well as The Avalanches and Elbow. The Australian production is set to launch June 2013 in Melbourne and here's what Justice had to say about the project. You can listen to a 17 minute stream of the score, featuring compositions by Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja by clicking here [...]

Mancunian band I Am Kloot surprise with a strong return. The brooding "Hold Back the Night" excels on arrangement; just the right bits of atmospheric guitar strums and 1-2 rhythms give way at the most perfect of points to swelling string builds. (The track was produced by Elbow's Guy Garvey and Craig Potter). "Hold Back the Night" is not to be missed. I Am Kloot - Hold Back the Night I Am Kloot ( Facebook ) Rating 8.2

The rhythmic drum beat opening Elbow's newest album, "Dead in the Boot", sets the tone for the rest of the album. A sort of hang-over mix produced by the notoriously alcohol fueled band, "Dead in the Boot" flows slowly through an array of songs- any one of which could be played over an indie film's conflict montage- that easily stir the listener into a catatonic state of melancholy. Although each song on the album climaxes with the sort of optimism that only Elbow can inspire. The band released "Dead in the Boot" (a reference to their first album [...]

Throw those curtains wide One day like this a year would see me right

Labor Day week is bittersweet. It marks the end of Summer but also the oncoming onslaught of Fall releases, many anticipated and very likely be your favorites of the year. While the work week may be short, your shopping list of new albums is already growing by miles. Topping this week are new releases from Cat Power , Animal Collective , Bob Mould , and Two Gallants , each with mind-blowing and possibly career defining albums. On Sun , her first album of new material in over six [...]
I've always been a fan of B-Side releases. Some people look at these cuts as fillers or not ready for an album, but not me. Sure, some of the songs were recorded during the album process but B-Side releases tend to give me a glimpse into what an artist or band are doing during the in-between times. This could be on the road, after a tour, or in the case of Elbow, just after completing an album. Elbow's Dead In The Boot – The B-Sides , released today on Fiction/Cooperative Music, brings together B-sides and non-album [...]
Elbow : Independent Woman Part 1 Ten years before they were one of the few bands chosen to perform at the Closing Ceremonies of 2012 Olympic Games, the UK alternative band Elbow recorded an acoustic version of the Destiny's Child #1 hit "Independent Woman, part 1". Like I said it was a #1 hit. One of the biggest songs of the Aughts. But by the turn of the century, I stopped listening to what was on the radio. I had an iPod. I was my own radio station. So the [...]

I'll keep this one brief, since I'm still issuing retractions and cleaning up the HTML mess from my last post . Guy Garvey, vocalist for Elbow: has said he is starting a new record label solely for vinyl EPs to revive the format. The singer told the BBC he was inspired to begin the project by EPs of the past and would be challenging fellow artists to try out the multi-track format. Each EP - which also comes with a free download code - will have four tracks, where one must [...]

The 2012 summer Olympics may have come and gone, but the excitement still lives on, especially in regards to Elbow' s closing ceremony performance and "First Steps", the official theme written for the BBC. Elbow was an inspired choice for the occasion, thanks to the Manchester quintet's unambiguously British sound and penchant for crafting songs that exude a sense of power and significance to soundtrack momentous occasions as emotionally charged as Olympic victories, even with the underlying melancholia. Following the wave of post-Olympic hysteria is Dead in the Boot , a decidedly uncommercial collection of B-sides and bonus [...]
Dit artikeltje is geplaatst in de categorie 'nieuwe muziek', maar dat gaat niet helemaal op. Dit schitterende liedje ("Deadlines pass year on year / Whisper grass, the falling tears / Whisper grass, wish you were here") van Manchester trots Elbow staat weliswaar op een nieuw verzamelalbum van de band (Dead In The Boat), maar is [...] The post "Nieuwe" muziek appeared first on Apply Some Pressure .
