I warned you that I was going to be talking about basketball a lot now that the playoffs are here, so don't be surprised by this post. How about Los Suns last night!? We're up 2-0 against our hated rivals and the team took a brave and courageous stance against the racist immigration bill that was recently signed. The story broke out nationally and was all over sports talk radio and ESPN yesterday. A few people I talked to didn't think it was a big deal for them to make that stand, but I beg to differ. Sports teams rarely [...]
I want to start off this post by apologizing to my loyal readers for my absence. It has been over a week since I last updated this site and you've probably been thinking it was dead for good at this point. Unfortunately for the haters, this blog isn't going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, my personal and professional life took over to the extreme this past week. I vow to everyone that has stuck around that updates will continue daily from this point forward. One of the things that has kept me from posting here is my growing rage over [...]
It's been just over a year since I discovered the musical oasis Boyles in historic Slane. If it was in walking distance of my house I'd be 'Norm' from Cheers! Here's a little mix of songs from some of the best acts to have played Boyles in the last twelve months. Wayne Brennan - In My Hands Wayne was the first established artist I seen live in Boyles. He had [...]
Fucked Up is a rare band that has managed to completely transcend the scene they came up in while remaining firmly tied to their roots. The hardcore band from Toronto has gained fans from all different scenes, including many people who would normally never give a hardcore band a chance. While scene purists may bitch about that, I think it's awesome that a band is able to have such a diverse audience at their shows. Strangely enough, this band played one of their first shows in the States in my basement in Tacoma, Washington in 2004 and I've since [...]
It's the season of awards and back slapping for the massive effort our finest and best musicians have made during 2009. This post is about celebrating those hidden gems I found throughout the year which for many reasons won't get the recognition they deserve in the coming weeks! 1. Susie Soho - Spinning Top Susie Soho released an excellent debut last year which had a few great tracks including 'Spinning Top'. http://www.susiesoho.com/ [...]
I always love a good house show, especially when it happens during the winter time. Luckily The Tribe House in Phoenix has a great one scheduled for January 7th. Sinks comes from Minneapolis and plays a brand of noisy and snotty garage-punk. They have released a few 7 inches to date and are making a stop in Phoenix during a nearly month long tour beginning on December 28th in their hometown. The show will also feature sets by local bands Cagematch , The Pods , and Elders. Since this is a house show, the [...]
I can honestly say that the Sessions nights in Slane have been going very well. I know I am biased but there's something magical about these nights. I am hoping that Thursday's night will continue the magic. I know people must have one eye on Christmas but I do hope we get a decent crowd this week. Here are some sample mp3s to encourage you to make the journey! Elder Roche - Shine Brian Canavan - Come and Get Me [...]
I knew there was something wrong when I came home from work the other night. Why was the postman still in front of my apartment building at 6PM? Why was he clutching his lower back and cursing my front door? The Ripple return address on the package on my doorstep couldn't have anything to do with it, could it? I pushed the exhausted mailman aside and tried to lift the package but could not. I got a neighbor to help me lift the small yellow mailer into my pad. The cats ran away in fright and the baby started wailing. [...]
....Heavy Riffs
Elder are back with their 2nd double record in 3 years. Again they have quite cool artwork and very long songs with a lot of cool passages. This album had been getting really good reviews but I needed to make my own opinion up by spinning it several times, the last time loud! This kind of music needs to be loud. Side A starts with Gemini which has a heavy down tuned riff to start then a great
Elder- "Gemini"
Elder is a Massachusetts rock band, and 2011 saw the release of its sophomore album, Dead Roots Stirring . It's out now via MeteorCity , and the song above comes from it. Even though this track, "Gemini," feeds into a few stereotypes for this genre, I can't help but find the riffs and guitar leads extremely catchy. Plus, the recording ain't half bad, too. Heavy band is heavy.

The Elderly: The Elderly
The Seattle based group, The Elderly, craft eloquent folk music with brilliant harmonies and tranquil backing music. I recently saw Whitney Lyman from the band perform with Pollens. I was talking to a friend of the band who told me that Whitney is also in The Elderly. When I asked her what type of music [...]

Crustcake Premiere: Elder - "Riddle of Steel Pt. 1"
Download: Elder - "Riddle of Steel Pt. 1" [MP3]We were so taken by Massachusetts-based pentatonic stoner rockers Elder when we posted about them last week that we were determined to bring our readers another taste. We managed to get our grubby little paws on an MP3 for the track "Riddle of Steel Pt. 1," which, for our money, is one of the best jams we've heard since Goatsnake's "Portraits of Pain
