Best of 2010 #4. Chimes ring in the dark winter that is Oh Thunder . I think of the panting animal instincts of "Scream," the lingering tension of "Trails of Star," the flurry of drums on "Hush (Smash!)," the rebirth of the body at the first sign of spring and the resolve of "When a Heart Becomes a Heart." Maturity for most means slowing down, settling. But here, it means letting go a little. Eleanor Murray- Street to Ride (off Oh Thunder )

~ The Chain Gang of 1974 - "Hold On" ~ From the album White Guts , which no doubt is one of - if not the - best dance album of the year. This one clocks in an impressive 8 minutes but it still doesn't feel very long. Why? Because it's just that awesome. ~ Eleanor Murray - "The Whale" ~ Ah, the lovely Eleanor Murray. A guitar, a violin and that shaky, fragile vibrato in her voice is pretty much all she needs to create magic, as this [...]

Billy Alpha Radical Hips Album Review Radical Hips(EP): You never know what the week will bring sometimes. Either you're in luck and you find money in a pocket or your inbox has a note from an old friend. Please meet Billy Alpha via Yab Yum Records . Most north Jerseyites know him from The Alphamales or his is more recent joint WJ & The Sweet Sacrifice. Solo and in his room Billy sings songs about his alarm clock as his girl makes sad faces on his arm. There are no solos just a man [...]

Here's one from the road. A favorite of mine- a pulsing, building, slightly droning epic. Love it. Performed at the amazing A Space in Silver City, New Mexico- a giant art gallery warehouse where we were given a show last minute after our show in Albuquerque fell through the day before. The space's first ever show, a wacky assortment of local middle aged oddballs. Couldn't have asked for better friends that night. Slept on the stage we played on. Eleanor Murray- Teach Me (Live in Silver City) (original off the excellent Little Warrior )

Eleanor Murray 's new album, Oh Thunder , hits the streets today. You have all heard me proclaim the goodness of Eleanor Murray a time or two before on this blog, but, as of last week, my fandom unexpectedly turned into member of the band. I'll be playing bass for her band on her tour that starts tomorrow in Seattle. I'm pretty excited. But, since I didn't play on Oh Thunder, I feel I can review it fairly and say that it is incredible. Her best yet. The tour officially kicks off tonight in Seattle at the Bread Factory [...]

In the past few days I've grown excited about the albums in the works from two of my favorite Olympia artists. Now, I don't have any new tracks to pass your way. Really, I just want to get you excited, too. I've seen Eleanor Murray play two fantastic shows of late, both of which have got me pumped for her new album. From the sounds of it, the album will be coming out in a few months and it's going to be a little weird. Expect this pleasing folkster to step into some pretty dissonant territory; the [...]

While just beginning, Anonymous Monk Records already produces some of the most beautiful albums around. Started by Ben Kamen, the small music/graphic arts collective has put out a handful of releases that have all been fantastic. Both Ben and Eleanor Murray (a beyond fantastic folk songstress), have released great solo albums on it, but their most impressive release to date is a Spring to Spring wall calendar that has an accompanying compilation cd, with artists doing a song for each month of the year. Paleo, Karl Blau, and members of LAKE are some of the bigger names on [...]
![Spring Calendar & Compilation 2009-2010 [Compilation Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1569471_lg.jpg)
Anonymous Monk is a small but growing collective of musicians based out of Washington and led by musician Ben Kamen. Earlier this year they gave us For Cedar by Eleanor Murray and now they've gone and done something else amazing: the first, to my knowledge, compilation calendar, featuring one song per month. The compilation is titled Spring Calendar & Compilation 2009-2010 and includes a collective of month-related titles, like "March" and "April" and "Month #93. Included in a thin, beautifully artistic sleeve and wrapped [...]

"It took me three hours to get home, daylight savings lended me the time," Eleanor Murray sings on "Today", the opening track of her debut album For Cedar . Little gems like that are what you'll uncover when listening to this singer/songwriter hailing from Olympia, Washington, a place that seems to be the home for many of today's upcoming folk artists. Eleanor Murray already is considered a star though, being described as her hometown's "folk-country diva" by Letters , a band whose debut album she made a guest appearance on last year. And while listening to For Cedar I think it might very [...]

Written by Fense As I'm listening to Eleanor Murray , I'm thinking an interesting thought. Could this be the sister of Devendra Banhart? Her voice quavers as she sings, much like his does so often. Her music is folk (though it lacks much of the World meets 70s Folk-Rock ). It is also amazingly catchy for a genre often stale and... err... flaccid. Murray's album is titled For Cedar ; fitting for a folk album. Opening with "Today" and [...]

myspace There's something about the adventurous, lo-fi folk music coming from the Pacific Northwest. Whether it's Karl Blau or lesser known acts like Ben Kamen (someone we've had lots to say about here on herohill), it seems every musician you uncover writes the type of songs that consume you. I'm not sure if it's because Nicola and I spent time there, but the music triggers memories every time I hear it. Naturally, when I heard Ben has started a label and was fixin' to deliver the first non-Kamen [...]
