(MP3s: 36 of them beyond the jump) Peer Gynt (1867) by Henrik Ibsen marks the end of romantic nationalism in Norway. In 1874 Edvard Grieg was asked to compose music for the play (or rather, was given a lot of cash to ditch a less profitable project with Norwegian author Björnstierne Björnson). As Ibsen's play grew on him, he complained to his friend Frants Beyer; "It is an immensely difficult subject, and I've done something to the [...]
I like memes, especially music-related ones. They are a great way to generate plug-and-play posts when I’m too lazy to do my own thinking. This meme comes courtesy of Bully , by way of Kevin Church . Total amount of music files on your computer: Currently 46 gigabytes, but the totals are always in a state of flux as I’m constantly shifting things in and out of my archives. The last CD you bought was: A used copy of Metro Stylee’s self-titled album from [...]
Jeff Lynne has restored the Electric Light Orchestra album catalog for the group's 35th Anniversary. The Epic/Legacy labels on Sony Music will release three more ELO albums tomorrow, September 12th. Each one includes alternate takes, mixes and song versions. 'On The Third Day, Face The Music, and A New World Record' are the latest releases in the wave of ELO expanded CD's that will continue through the end of this year. We should see two more albums by Christmas; 'Out Of The Blue' (from 1977), and 'Balance Of Power' (1986.) [...]

Regardless of the fact that Ernesto has dampened our end of the summer Labor Day spirits, even if the sun was shining the rolling around of this September weekend always evokes a nostalgic symbolism...which is why The Tyde's California warmth is so comforting and welcoming. The LA based five piece owes as much to the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean as to The Byrds, Jesus & Mary Chain and Teenage Fanclub. The Tyde's a family affair fronted by Darren Rademaker on singing and guitars, his [...]

The Smashing Pumpkins are currently in the studio working on a new album with producer Roy Thomas Baker, who most recently produced The Darkness. Something tells me that SP is going to turn into one of those bands who aim for a commercial hit with no depth whatsoever. Well, anything is better than Billy Corgan trying to be Depeche Mode. // Interpol signed with Capitol, which I don't think will impact their music significantly. Matador was no small fish in the pond either. // The Shins album is delayed until 2007, as they were saying they [...]
The September Q takes a look at Guilty Pleasures, those songs and albums you love even though for some reason you "shouldn't". The reasoning is sometimes a bit iffy. Their list of guilty pleasure tracks includes "I Got You" by Split Enz, a damn good song, and one there is no reason to feel guilty for liking (Split Enz is "Best remembered for their bizarre hair, make-up and costumes", according
L.E.O. is a power-pop collective that began as an homage to the genius of Jeff Lynne and ELO . Originally conceived by LA based singer-songwriter Bleu, the project has become a Traveling Wilbury-esque creative effort for a bunch of like minded producers and musicians. Due out in October on Cheap Lullabye Records , the album is called Alpacas Orgling and features the talents of Andy Sturmer (Jellyfish), Mike Viola (The Candy Butchers), Matt Mahaffey (Self), John Fields (producer extraordinaire), Steve Gorman [...]

Fuck indie cred and ironic hipsterism; it’s a gorgeous summer Friday evening, and I’m on vacation next week. It’s time to break the seals on my Chest of Guilty Pleasures and unleash the power of good ol’ fashioned rawk music. A bottle of Boone’s Farm and a burnt orange Camaro (or custom van conversion) are not required, but are recommended to complete the experience. The parking lot by the baseball fields beckons; will you and your leather vest answer the clarion call to party? J. Geils Band â€" Must of Got Lost (from [...]

George W. Bush and I are a lot alike. For starters, we are both former dum-dum coke-inhaling frat boy alcoholics who only wrangled our way into Yale thanks to our father slipping some green towards the school. Second, we've both been wasting our time and energy: he on Iraq (anyone with half a brain could have told you North Korea is more dangerous than Saddam Hussein ), me on latter day ELO (anyone with half a brain could have told you ELO 2 is more dangerous than [...]
