Eleni [...]

This is a last minute thing, but Eleni Mandell is opening up for Erin McKeown at St. James Hall in Vancouver this Friday @ 7PM. It's an early show, and a great way to start off your weekend. Eleni's voice can best be described as a thrift store soul/jazz artist with a little bit of quirk tossed in to lighten the mood. Influenced equally by soul greats like Nina Simone and punk rockers, her style is a lot like the record itself; a slow burner. Her new album - Miracle of Five - is [...]

one of the most important things to remember about finding new music is that almost every single album i ever run across defies my expectations in some fashion. as humans, we make judgments upon first contact, no matter who we are or how hard we try not to -- and when we look at album art, hear a name, or hear just a few chords of one song, we automatically make assumptions and write a story for something we know nothing about. i did this with Eleni Mandell , along with probably every other artist [...]

I know I have been away for too long but I do have some wonderful music to offer you...What has been sparking my interest this past week? Well let's see... Bloc Party's Weekend in the City was officially released this past Tuesday and I immediately noticed Okereke's apparent lyrical growth. The lyrics of songs like "Waiting for the 7:18" and "I Still Remember" are much more expressive in a strikingly direct way. "I Still Remember" recalls an attraction of two schoolboys with such an eloquent tenderness: And on that teachers' [...]
Video: Softlightes - Heart Made Of Sound [ WATCH NOW ] I was running around like a mad person with her head cut off yesterday and didn't get an opportunity to post - you forgive me? Please accept Softlightes amazing video for "Heart Made Of Sound" Directed by Kris Moye as penance. We cool? I must say this January shaped up to be one of my most fruitful months in terms of finding new music. I've [...]

Have you heard of Eleni Mandell ? If not, listen up. On February 6th, Mandell will release her new album, Miracle of Five , a beautiful cd inside and out.. Miracle is this LA musician's fifth album which Filter Magazine calls a "culmination of her vibrant oeuvre." With hearts decorating the cover, this album is a beautiful little Valentine's day gift. Her voice reminds me of Nellie McKay and Nicole Atkins, very strong, very distinct. Her songs are 'Pink Moon', Nick [...]

Every once in awhile, everyone has one of those days where they just stay in bed all day, with a cup of coffee in one hand and a box of chocolates in the other. After all, life can get rough sometimes. Perhaps these are the days when "rainy day music" sounds best, whether it's raining or not. Typically consisting of light, breezy, and relaxing melodies created by the usual assortment of lo-fi instruments, it's a breed where succession is surprisingly hard to find. Eleni Mandell has been a master craftsmaker of "rainy day music" for about ten years [...]
First of all, I want to thank anyone and everyone who came out to the show Saturday night to see the Bridges, Bang Bang Bang, and Chainestereo. There was a great crowd, and the music was simply stellar. We'll do another one in the future, I'm sure. Second of all, I have been collecting a large number of emails from promo companies and labels, and quite frankly, I've been overwhelmed. I haven't had a chance to listen to it all between the holidays, the vacation I took, and being a miserable person in [...]

On Saturday I worked with Panache. I got to drive the van again! Mia and I drove it for a Bat Mitzvah , it was the longest one I've ever worked. We were there from 7am at the shop and back at the shop at 6:30pm. Whoaaaaaaaat! After seeing the dance themed party, I think I want one now too! My latest tank on my TDI was 583 miles. I think that is around 40mpg. Not Bad! [...]
Eleni Mandell - Girls Annuals - Brother The Rapture - Whoo! Alright, Yeah...Uh Huh Kraak - I Was Not There The Shondes - Let's Go Panthers - Uncertainly
It's raining right now, so I think I might pass on what I've been listening to (very easy listening stuff): You might remember Eleni Mandell from punk pioneers X, as well as her connections with Tom Waits. She's coming out with a new solo album, and it's something that shows the lighter side of her musical half. L.A. Magazine gave her a best local singer-songwriter nod in 2004, ever since her self-produced release in 1999. Miracle of Five features cameos from such artists as Nels Cline ( Wilco ) [...]
there is nothing better than starting your saturday morning off right. after a cup of coffee and a nice calm walk around the park or perhaps its one of those peaceful rainy days in bed, a favorite way to spend this special time is watching a 4 episode mini marathon of six feet under . thanks to the bravo network , its possible to catch up on lost seasons and reflect again on all the tiny details that made this show feel so captivating. for those on the unknown, this was simply a special [...]
