I've always found it difficult to describe my tastes in electronic music. Mainstream sources often lean to either extremes of heavy bass or mellowed ambient. Leaving my fondness for subtle distortions, varying rhythms, unusual samples, and intricate layers as jargon phrases to the average listener. I've tried highlighting popular musicians (in my mind) to explain elements like Flying Lotus's layering, The Postal Service's rhythmic patterns (rather than say Dntel), Groove Armada's variations of house, or the Art of Noise's re-imagining of Debussy. Oakland sound engineer David Vincent Reep hits hard with the nostalgia on Transitions , his first full-length album of electronica as Elephant & Castle , out on the L.A.-based Plug Research label. He's not conjuring actual nostalgia for all the good times you had in the summer of 2006, or whenever, but rather anticipating a yearning for echos of times to come, or perhaps of a past moment that didn't stick the first time around. In so doing, the album churns up a head-melting mash of unusual samples, lush, ambient electronica, and sparse jazz beats. [...]

The reliably stellar Plug Research label just put out these visuals for "I Will", the lead single off Bay Area beatsmith Elephant & Castle 's forthcoming LP. Done by SF videographers Echolocale, it's a decidedly no-frills affair, featuring Elephant & Castle performing the track live in what appears to be a groovily lit, sparsely attended basement. It's a beautifully shot video, however, with dramatic splashes of color, Day of The Dead imagery and close-ups of the producer's equipment (nerd alert: dude has a Monome!) accenting the song's hazy, washed-out delirium perfectly. Exactly one month ago, Elephant & Castle , the solo project of composer David Vincent Reep, released the track " En Memoria ," which featured the vocals of none other than tUnE-yArDs . Typically, music videos translate a collection of noises into a series of organized imagery. As Elephant & Castle , ambient/electronica composer David Vincent Reep's intricate soundscapes aren't easily deciphered and assigned accompanying visuals. While that complicates the process for directors, it's also a chance to forego traditions and restraint. In the case of the video for the tUnE-YarDs- aided "En Memoria" , that translates to a piece created by someone using Lightwave 3D while on peyote. I love getting PR emails about artists who have personally reached out months before, and Elephant & Castle has come back to us in a big way with a collaboration with tUnE-YarDs ' Merril Garbus. "En Memoria" almost sounds like something Daedelus would have produced, with sweeping arrays of orchestrated samples that cyclically give way to Merrill's gorgeous vocals. As the embodiment of gutsy vocalist last year, Merril Garbus' appearance on Elephant & Castle's 'En Memoria' has a refreshing daydream quality to it. It's a gentle riposte to a year spent looping guttural vowels through alluring melodies. On March 13th, ambient/electronica composer David Vincent Reep, who creates under the pseudonym Elephant & Castle , will release his debut LP, Transitions , via Plug Research. For a starter course on Reep's free-form sonic creations, he's released the album track "En Memoria", featuring guest vocals from Merrill Garbus (aka tUnE-YarDs). Waves of slow, methodical noise lull the listener in, with Garbus' distinct vocal styling - at an all-time hazy - waiting patiently.
