Photo by Michael Piantigini.] Twenty aught-eleven was one of those star-aligning years that gifted me with tons of music I like - This year's list is admittedly pretty heavy on my wheelhouse veterans, but how lucky to still get such strong stuff from bands like Buffalo Tom , Five Eight , and the friggin' Feelies ! Having taken to heart The Long Winters ' John Roderick's admonitions on top 10 lists (and let's hope he gets that [...]

With the quality of work Eleventh Dream Day has been responsible for putting out over the last 23 years, it is astonishing that most people aren't familiar with them. Then again, you get the feeling they might like it that way. Read more » http://rpc.blogcatalog.com/ http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ ping
The opening show of this year's Downtown Sound series at Millennium Park tonight starts off with an intriguing double bill: Bonnie Prince Billy and Eleventh Dream Day . Here's a quirky Bonnie Prince Billy video (redundant?) from a few years ago. He'll be accompanied by the Cairo Gang. Chicago's Eleventh Dream Day is promoting a new album, Riot Now! The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and is free. Here's a video from [...]

howdy! hope everyone had a loverly weekend, mine was just fine. what we have here is a tribute to the velvet underground which was released back in 1994, in the uk, by imaginary records - heres the wiki page . said label no longer exists, and you can only buy used and one collectible version of it via amazon so i felt pretty ok with posting the entire thing. the lineup for the most part is pretty stellar as you can see, and their respective interpretations aint too shabby either. 1. here she [...]

1900s | photo by Chris Zakorchemny If there is one single thing we all look forward to every week, it's the weekend. It doesn't matter that it's going to rain or that there could probably be thunderstorms. This is the Midwest, damn it. We don't care what the weather's like, we do what we want. So it's our pleasure to bring to you those shows that light up every weekend no matter how fog-filled the sky is, no matter how snow-covered the ground is or how smoky your house may be (don't ask). [...]
"I am dressed as a janitor tonight because I am here to clean up. I am here to clean up. I am here to get pledges to keep WFMU operable for another year. I am here to clean up. I am here to sweep up the mess ... Okay, I lost the footing on this metaphor already, but I'm telling you right now I am here dressed as a janitor 'cause I am here to clean up, to sweep up your pledges!" -- Tom, explaining the thematic underpinnings of his Week 2 wardrobe "What's gonna trend [...]

Here's some serious sonic tenderoni for your Thursday morning. As you may or may not be aware, our friends at Thrill Jockey recently released Eleventh Dream Day's 10th record, a dazzling little slab called Riot Now! No shock here that Riot Now! contains a heapin' helpin' of urgent college radio pop-noise elegance from the Chi-based quartet, perhaps their most white-knuckled offering since 1988's Prairie School Freakout , however, this may be the first must-own of the year [...]

But wait, there's more! Every year for the last decade or so, hometown hero Alejandro Escovedo has curated a post-SXSW benefit show at Austin's legendary Continental Club. He hand-picks the acts, enlists guest-stars aplenty, and essentially takes back his mantle of being a kind of mayor of Austin music after beating back the invasion of the world's bands, bloggers, music businessmen, and fans. Though I doubt he thinks of it that way - he couldn't have been a more gracious host. We joined the 6:30 pm - 2:00 am show already [...]

Label: Thrill Jockey Release date: 21/03/11 Link: MySpace Buy: Amazon After nearly 30 years of existence, you'd be forgiven for thinking veteran US indie rockers Eleventh Dream Day would be mellowing out a bit. After all, over the years they've seen their contemporaries achieve higher levels of success and cult statuses, split up then reform to play to bigger crowds than before (and probably get to curate ATP), while they've kept on going to [...]

Records like this always seem to get my attention one way or another. I guess I am a sucker for the old marketing ploy of a band "reaching back into the old days", where I will always take a listen and see if it's in fact true. I should state for the record that it is often not in fact true. For a band like Eleventh Dream Day , it strikes me as stranger than most of those former occurrences because they had seemingly settled nicely into a rather subdued form of [...]

Eleventh Dream Day forces its way through the brush rather than blaze a trail by fire, and its Midwestern, determined stoicism sinks into its stolid, measured delivery. These Chicago-based indie-rock stalwarts return with a welcome jolt. I've admired them since their 1988 full-length debut, Prairie School Freakout. That was recorded, its liner notes explained, in an all-night session, half of which was spent trying to fix the amplifier's buzz, the other half giving in and getting on with rowdy, rootsy tunes mingling harmonies with feedback, Rick Rizzo's guitar aggression with Janet Beveridge Bean's backing vocals, and smart drumming. Along [...]
With more than 100 years of accumulated rock 'n' roll history as a foundation, Candy Golde is the Midwestern musical collaboration of Nicholas Tremulis, Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick) John Stiratt (Wilco) and Rick Rizzo (Eleventh Dream Day). The distinctive blend of blues groove, power pop, Americana and alternative shows itself in the self-titled 5-song Candy Golde EP, to be released by Ten O Nine Records on May 11.
