This only my first post today—I'll be back in a bit with some country-flavored tunes. But to hold you over until then, here's fifteen songs, making up for my silence the past few days. Enjoy—and Go Elf Yourself, San Diego. It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year – Andy Williams Agreed with Andy Williams on this one. Mistress for Christmas – AC/DC In hindsight, I suppose this song was kind of
Steve Golberg & The Arch Enemies Genre: Indie / Pop / Rock From: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania United States From deep in the bowels of a secret recording studio somewhere on planet earth, Steve Goldberg with his merry band of orchestral mercenaries and every possible symphonic instrument known to man (and some that probably haven't even been invented yet) has produced an elaborately orchestrated pop masterpiece. I know, I posted this Elf Power song before, but it's my favorite by them and the last.fm thing doesn't work for me anymore, and I just found it elsewhere, and anyway, why not, etc. Most of these others I happened upon within the last day to a week. I posted a nice one by The Contrast back when I was a babyblogger (toddlerblogger now, I flatter myself to think), along with several other

more photos here I just got in from the Subatomic Pieces / Elf Power show at the Opolis tonight. It may be the crap we've had for weather the last week or so, or that it was a Monday, or maybe that it was finals week, but something kept the crowd from being what it should have been tonight. Those of us that were there saw a great show. [...]

This will serve as a dual purpose post. Both a live review and some mp3 sharing. Last night I caught the end Elf Power's set. This troop from Athens, Georgia played a really fun show. Their stage presence was so comfortable it felt like a local band on a Thursday night. It was a pretty full house at Spaceland, everybody looking like they were having a great time. Elf Power's unique ability to have 6 bodies and different instruments all creating dancable folk indie rock is what makes it all worth listening to and seeing them [...]
There's a good show happening tonight (4/26) at The Crocodile with Elf Power, Lillydale and Patience Please. So, in celebration and preparation, I thought I'd post some mp3s from those bands. Elf Power's "An Old Familiar Scene" Lillydale's "Broken Stereos" Patience Please's "Antediluvian"

Yes, there are even more than previously posted . Generous, generous Glorious Noise ! I have but scratched the surface. I will not claim to be the fiercest fan of The Strokes , but this one I liked very much. The Strokes - 12:51 Elf Power - An Old Familiar Scene The Thermals - [...]

Okay, I'm a bit skitterish about this one, so please bear with me. Back in early December, I went group-by-group, song-by-song through a long list of artists I found at the 2006 South-by-Southwest festival website . I sampled every song I didn't already know and prepared my own list of the ones I liked best, old friends and new. For various reasons totally uninteresting even to myself I've just never posted a big bloc of the songs, some of which are by some of my favorite current artists. Soooooo, I'm simply [...]

Today we highlight three Elf Power -related MP3s, two of them pretty rare, the other not so much. All three have one thing in common: they're lyric-less instrumental pieces, though of very different styles. "Wrinkles" was a bonus track on 1999's A Dream in Sound , appearing as the B-side to the vinyl 7" that accompanied it. It's a brief snippet of distorted electric guitar that wouldn't quite fit into the more poppy psychedelic album to which it's associated. "Green Sea Days" appeared on 2000's The Winter is Coming , [...]
Enjoy this mp3 cornucopia of my favorite records of 2006. Some are direct links, others link to blogs/websites with the mp3s on them, so you may need to exert a little effort. There's probably 25 intentional links to mp3s, and at least that many extra on the pages I link to. Enjoy, and everyone have good vibes for 2007. Jeff's Top 15 of 2006 1) The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America mp3 sample - " Chips Ahoy! [...]

I'm going to hope against hope and trust against trust (if that's even possible) my good friend stytzer won't mind my posting the following song. He put it in an excellent post about last.fm , which he says is posting more and more downloadable music these days. To prove it, he posted nine fine examples, including one of my very favorite songs by Athenians Elf Power . So go over and listen to the rest at Hits in the Car before the music-loving Dane [...]
I mentioned the Free Downloads chart over at last.fm in my post yesterday, but I thought I should put a little more focus on the chart in today's post. Why? Several reasons why? First of all! Wouldn't it be great if this chart became really popular? Then bands and labels would be even more motivated to make their music available for free at last.fm . Furthermore you don't have to be a registered member or login to be able to download the songs, which mean that bloggers can link directly to the songs [...]
The suspense is killing you, isn't it? Favorites of 2006, 11 - 14 Earlimart: Answers and Questions from Answers and Questions 7" Vinyl I was excited as hell to find that Earlimart had released something this year. I hope the full album next year is as good as this one track. If so, you'll see it on my Favorites list next year too. [...]
I finally getting down to the top ten, and this is where it got really difficult to pick a particular song from an artist, and to figure out where the song should fall on my list. I don't really think that any of these songs are "better" than any other song on this list, but the point of a ranked list is to put things in a rank. See 11-15 , 16-20 , and 21-25 , and you'll notice that all of these songs are terrific and wonderful and worth listening to. [...]

" Indie pop refers to indie music which is considered to be based on the conventions of pop music. The term is nebulous." I came across that line while flipping through the pages of Wikipedia and thought it was great. Nebulous is probably the gold standard when it comes to synonyms for the much less exciting word, vague . The quote is taken from Wiki's information on indie pop, which goes on to read: "Because indie rock is sometimes used to mean indie music as a whole, indie [...]
In 1997 the then-youngish label of Kindercore Records, operating out of Athens, GA, put out a compilation called Christmas in Stereo. It featured some hip bands like The Olivia Tremor Control and The Mendoza Line , and some more obscure ones, just getting started, like... Summer Hymns and of Montreal . It was a top seller and apparently a lot of fun to compile, so two years later, as the label started to gather more fans and started to put together a rather brilliant lineup, they put out a sequel to [...]

Who else cannot believe that it is freaking October already? While it may suck that we will be freezing our asses off in a few weeks, not all of the news is bad. The Baltimore region's fall concert influx is in full swing and continues this week. The Hold Steady The week begins with a solid Monday. Elf Power and Water School bring the indie rock to The Talking Head . The Hold Steady and [...]
