I should probably be out at the Northside Festival right now brining you more coverage of the weekend's festivities. I am, however, a little too festivitied out. Nevertheless, I saw some great music this weekend at Brooklyn's mini music fest. Here's a brief recap. Friday night brought me to Studio B for the first time, a very cool venue nestled on an out-of-the-way street in Williamsburg. The first band I caught was an extremely cool, extremely different three piece called Elfin Saddle . Their music is definitely inspired by Asian scales and instruments, and the amount of [...]

Patrick Watson - "Fireweed" Patrick Watson's Wooden Arms is leaps & bounds better than his debut and it is an album full of leaps and bounds. He is a pretty singer, and his lyrics lilt, yet it's the instrumental landscape that thrums, hums, brings the record shuddering to life. Tracks like "Big Bird in a Small Cage" are as lovely as bowls full of fruit, but the bounding-er, leaping-er tracks - "Tracy's Waters," "Beijing," "Where the Wild Things Are" - are the ones that carry this across a ravine from Cibelle, Tom Waits, Andrew Bird. [...]

concert review : Tindersticks , Elfin Saddle @ The Opera House (Toronto, Ontario) - March 10, 2009 Tindersticks' Stuart Staples: photo by Michael Ligon It was probably for the best that if I were to be attending any shows just prior to the three days of Canadian Musicfest shows I plan to attend that it would be the Tindersticks and Elfin Saddle at The Opera House this past Tuesday night. Succintly, it's the kind of show that hardly [...]

Frank Yang Even before setting foot in Toronto's Opera House on Tuesday night, you knew it wasn't going to be a typical evening - security wasn't bothering to check anyone's ID, as the odds of someone underage wanting to sneak into a Tindersticks were pretty much slim to none. The audience for the veteran Brits, on their first North American tour in half a decade in support of their first album in just as long - last year's The Hungry Saw - skewed older to say the least. [...]

Tick Tick presents Montreal (and BTV) goodness: CLUES (Montreal, featuring Alden Penner of the Unicorns and Brendan Reed of Arcade Fire) ELFIN SADDLE (Montreal) NOSEBLEED ISLAND (local) At 143 North Avenue, 8pm, $6-$10 suggested donation Thursday, November 6th Elfin Saddle has come in the past, and also played a memorable show in Stannard on a very smoky december evening as the church's woodstove backdrafted crazily. They have a really creative approach to being a two person band. Clues | Perfect [...]
