Pictures: Sideproject EP Launch W/ Elk, Terriers @ Cyprus Avenue, June 15

I had a lot of fun on Saturday night, June 15, in Cyprus Avenue. Sideproject were making their triumphant return to the Cork stage after two years away. They were launching They Made You Miss Everything, their first new EP in FIVE YEARS! I've already talked about how much I like the EP here, and [...]

The Great Ocean Divide & Elk on tour

The Great Ocean Divide & Elk on tour Fancy a dancey in Nancy's?! No seriously... Instrumental titans The Great Ocean Divide and genre-garglers Elk team up for a five date tour of Ireland including a Thursday night stop-off on Barrack Street. The former - last spotted down Leeside way on the opposite side of the street when Family Planning , Chirps and their good selves took no prisoners in An Realt Dearg - are bracing themselves for a 2013 album release, due [...]

Songs: 2012 Part 5

At last, we're at the end of a week long campaign to bring you the 75 songs, split into five collections of 15 songs each, that soundtracked the year for me.  There's been a post a day this week from Monday to Friday (here's short cuts to Monday's post , Tuesday's post , Wednesday's post , and Thursday's post ), and you can collection them all to get a pretty awesome compilation that I think is a good summation of the last 12 months.  To download a .zip file with today's set of music, click the [...]

Channeling Elk

We were just now over at last.fm innocently celebrating being able to scrobble again when we found a couple of fairly recent discoveries all free and available like. Torontans Elk seem to be channeling a bit of the old Mickey and Sylvia with that irresistible little hook in "Riverview #3" and hint at it in the very next Daydream ditty as well. We don't hear it quite so much in the curl-shootin

WiN: Elk – Daydreams on your choice of vinyl or CD

WiN: Elk – Daydreams on your choice of vinyl or CD Although I first reviewed it back in May, Elk are getting set to fully launch Daydreams tomorrow.  Their latest album, and first full length release for IndoorShoes, harkens back to bygone days of yore while keeping a foot or two firmly planted in the future.  It's definitely been one of the highlights of 2012 for me, and will be for one lucky Quick Before It Melts reader, too. Thanks to the good folks at IndoorShoes, there's a copy of [...]

Elk: "Riverview"

Toronto/Niagara band Elk release their new album Daydreams on July 17th. Have a listen to the track "Riverview" now:

No Spill Blood- “Good Company”

Irish Super group No Spill Blood consists of members from Elk, Adebisi Shank and Magic Pockets. This new single from the the project premiered by BBC consists of muddy, heavy, and repetitive riffs as well as some very distorted vocals. They combine this with some really fantastic spacey synthesizer s that gives the entire production a pretty original feel. Everything is combined into what feels like a beautiful mess of raw power and aggression. I definitley want to hear more from them and their particular brand of noise rock. Look for their EP set to drop sometime this summer.

NXNE Review: Boxer The Horse, Elk, June 14, El Mocambo

I know I'm not the first one to make this comparison(and I won't be the last) but Charlottetown's Boxer The Horse sound an awful lot like Pavement. 'Wowee Zowee', 'Crooked Rain Crooked Rain'-era Pavement in both music and vocal-style. They're the first to admit that they are fans though so at least there's no denial and with Pavement being one of my favourite bands through my university days and beyond, it's nice to see that young bands are still being inspired and taking something from '90s indie heroes like Built to Spill, Yo La Tengo, and Pavement. Another [...]

Mix: Knockanstockan 2012

Mix: Knockanstockan 2012 Here's two-thirds of the Knockanstockan 2012 line-up. The rock, roots and folk line-up is pretty decent with a few great bands here. Listen to a few of those acts here! Arrow In The Sky, Autumn Owls, Best Boy Grip, Blind Yackety, Cat Dowling, Christ of, Crow Black Chicken Cry Monster Cry, Earthship, Elk, Enda Reilly, Fox.E & The Good Hands, Fusion Trip, Gypsy Rebel Rabble, Hassle Merchants, Hush War Cry, [...]

You’re the one

You’re the one Rock and roll should snarl at you.  It should curl its upper lip and stare you down with indignation at your utter lack of coolness in the presence.  It will leave you in awe at just how effortlessly it can convey a breezy detachment, rebel passion, and complete confidence all in one verse/chorus/verse.  That's what we fall in love with. There's much to fall for on Daydreams , the new album from St. Catharines/Toronto-based Elk , and the first full length release from IndoorShoes , the brazen young label and show [...]

ELK - If Not For You / Memories
I might have been a bit quiet about the musical goings on around the Niagara Region lately, but that doesn't mean everyone else has been.  Case in point: the good good folks at IndoorShoes have been putting on a slew of great gigs in and around St. Catharines, even venturing into the Big Smoke for some showcases of our local talent.  Things are about to kick into high gear for the label and concert promoter, as they get set to release their first full length disc, the debut album from Elk [...]

Martian Church XX / Elks – split tape – freelovinganarchists Records [Album As Art #158]

Stream: Crayonsmith, Elk – ‘Heaven in an Aeroplane’, ‘Wet Stars’

Crayonsmith are one of my favourite Irish bands, mainly due to the near perfection of previous album, White Wonder. But that was over three years ago. So to say I was pleased to hear they finally had new material would be an understatement. 'Heaven In An Aeroplane' is one half [Read more]

Alt Folk from Brooklyn: Great Elk play CMJ at Spike Hill on 10.19

Alt Folk from Brooklyn: Great Elk play CMJ at Spike Hill on 10.19 Slowly, Great Elk 's songs creep from a position of distance and unfamiliarity to a timeless groove, like something your parents would play on the first cold day of fall. Starting out sparse and confused, Vocalist Paul Basile carries the band as they gently layer their sound, adding minimalist drum and bass, with an ever-weeping pedal steel guitar. Bryan Trenis's dramatic keyboards and, "approximate vegetarianism," help to portray the lonesome yet confident quality of Great Elk's sound. They have self- released two EP's, handing out limited editions to lucky show-goers this past February, and are currently on tour in [...]
