Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi You may not know the name, but media-savvy individuals will recognize Willy Moon’s bombastic ditty, “Yeah Yeah,” which played during last year’s Apple iPod campaign. The lanky New Zealander brought his genre-bending blend of rock to the Troubadour before a well-dressed crowd, with Moon even pointing out some lovely ladies up in front. Willy Moon’s songs took on an edgier, “punkier” feel for this show, as the album’s slick production was brought to life with the help of Gigi Golderro (drums) and Juliette Jackson (guitar). At only [...]
Tuesday things: ► Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers continue their 6-night stint over at the Fonda Theatre. ► London's alternative dance/band Crystal Fighter s stop by the El Rey Theatre in support of their album "Cave Rave," and Australia's electro-pop outfit Alpine open. That's Alpine's video for "Gasoline" above. ► Kiwi indie popper Willy Moon plays at the Troubadour with and soul, rock and blues artist Elle King as direct support. ► Big Black Delta and Battle Tapes team up at [...]

I never thought I would be posting the theme song for a reality show that goes by the name of "Mob Wives." But here I am, just floored by the track as well as the rest of the EP it resides on. I've never seen "Mob Wives" and I don't think I should have any desire to, but whoever that unfortunate audience is, they get lucky every time they tune in and catch Elle King singing the lead in. This was another find the pile of SXSW bands I've been going through. Goodness her voice. The [...]

photos by Toby Tenenbaum Of Monsters and Men @ T5, 11/20/2012 Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men 's rapid rise in popularity is one of 2012 big success stories, as evidenced by two sold-out NYC shows at Terminal on Tuesday (11/20) and Wednesday (11/21). Pictures from Tuesday's show are in this post. Both nights featured openers openers Elle King and fellow Icelander Sóley who plays a headlining set [...]

If you think you’ve read about Elle King on Breaking More Waves before then congratulations on your excellent memory, for we briefly mentioned the 22 year old New York dwelling singer-songwriter who comes via Ohio via California via Philadelphia via Copenhagen via Los Angeles via a piece from Camden ( here ) earlier this year. Today we’re adding a little more. Playing For Keeps , taken from her debut EP is a bluesy country-pop stomp that rather [...]
One music scribe described Elle King 's particular sound as "Billie Holiday having a shot of whiskey with Johnny Cash", an account that would be pretty ridiculous if it weren't so uncannily accurate. Ever since Amy Winehouse, Adele and Duffy hit the charts we've begun to rethink what a bluesy, blue-eyed-soul woman can be in a pop world and 22-year-old King, with her shock of platinum blond locks and array of body ink, is joyfully pushing her way onto a similar stage -- and on her own terms. The voice is equal parts sassy strut [...]

It may only be 4 songs long, but Elle King's debut EP show much promise for this young Ohioan-Brooklynite. She is currently working on her debut LP, which should be amazing. VH1 likes her so much they used the song below are their theme for "Mob Wives Chicago". Listen (via SoundCloud ):

The cold wet streets of Camden are awash with drunken hordes tonight, but that’s just a typical weekend here. Thrown into that mix is a bunch of wristband wearing music seekers who are staggering their way between the pubs, clubs and venues of north London’s pleasure streets. Yes, you know it can only be the Camden Crawl . The legendary multi-venue multi-gig festival may be the oldest swinger in town these days, imitated by many others that have arguably [...]

[Three feisty female-led tracks that have come across our radar...] Elle King , "Playing For Keeps" — Elle King's gutsy sound is Brooklyn meets Nashville meets Detroit. Her gritty soulful voice glides and halts as it pleases over rock arrangements boasting banjo and guitar, and she's currently on tour with big name artists such as Of Monsters and Men and Train. But the originality on her forthcoming debut EP (out June 12 on Fat Possum Records) just might be leaving both those bands in [...]

Chic Gamine at La Tulipe // Credit: Tete Sometimes, in all this noise, I miss hearing a simple voice, especially female voices. Looking at my personal list of 2011's top 10 records, none of them were female fronted. So to show some love for those that sometimes get overlooked, here are four great female fronted songs to listen to right now. If I wanted to be honest I'd admit that I looked for these songs to keep me from listening to old Tori Amos records. All from the (legal) [...]

We received a short e-mail from Steven at Big Hassle suggesting we check out a new artist by the name of Elle King. We're glad we did. Although background info is pretty scarce we did discover she was born in Ohio and raised in Brooklyn by her mother. She retains her roots in a style that blends those two worlds of both grit and mid-western charm. Apparently she often draws comparisons to Billie Holiday , Regina Spektor and similar, and we would certainly add [...]
Back in December, we presented a rather pleasant Winter get-together with a few longtime favorites and now we're back at pehrspace for the Summer version with some ol' time lovers and new time friends.Let's start with the new since we've been running around catching Elle King, Victoria Noll, and I Hate You Just Kidding for a little while now.
