This is beautiful. Elliot Smith's music is haunting. Almost melancholy. Young Edits does this so much justice. Amazing lo-fi edit of "Needle in the Hay", an incredibly beautiful song. I'm taken to the scene from The Royal Tenenbaums nearly every time I hear this. Movies can sometimes be a magnificent blend of music and image. Thank jah for good movies, music and art. Elliott Smith wrote some of the prettiest pop songs ever written. Of course, writing a pretty pop song isn't the same thing as writing an upbeat pop song. "Between the Bars" is a perfect example. The melody is touchingly beautiful and unthreateningly gentle. The lyrics, however, are undeniably troubled. Although the song could double as an unorthodox love song (a popular interpretation of the track), the most likely read is that it's about the threat of impending alcoholism. As the track opens, Smith sings ruefully about "the potential you'll be, but you'll never see / the promises you'll only make." [...]

Have you ever been listening to your Top 25 on iTunes and found yourself thinking "Wow, this is great but what I would really love right now is a mix of Buddy Holly and psychedelic rock sung by someone who sounds slightly like Elliot Smith ?" While it may not be the most direct line of thinking, after listening to San Francisco- based indie rock band Girls you cannot help but wonder how the strange musical compilation didn't enter your perception earlier. Main songwriter and singer (as well as former Children of God cult member) [...]

I'm especially excited for this weeks edition of Throwback Thursdays as it features an artist that I've loved for years, but actually never had the opportunity to share with you on TBT. Elliot Smith was an American born songwriter who despite being well received while he was still with us, battled depression, alcoholism and drug addiction before a controversial death at the age 34. Although inspired by many great artists including Pink Floyd , Modest Mouse , [...]

I'm a hundred miles and running right now so I have no choice but to make this a quick one. Ryan sent me a brand spanking new mixtape over the weekend and talk about perfect timing! My BB won't stop buzzing with emails, I have music to produce, restaurants to curate, DJ sets to finish and all in the before Friday when I fly out to DR to spin at a beach party. Life is going fast right now and I have no intention on slowing up. Anyways, Ryan says this is a pensive tape but for those [...]

![[MP3] Elliot Smith – The Real Estate (Rough Mix)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3572031_lg.jpg)
There's no doubt that Elliot Smith goes down as one of the more prolific singer / song writers of our time. Delivering such a combination of emotion and talent in his music, when I heard new material had surfaced, it was almost a bittersweet feeling. Live From Nowhere Near You , a three-disc compilation that benefits homeless youth programs, features a previously unreleased Elliot Smith track entitled "The Real Estate." Although this is the DAT version that was taken from the original recording, a different version of the song will be [...]

Happy Independence Day, Shufflers! For this American holiday, we've put together a playlist of songs that (sort of) reminds us of July 4. Well, at least, some of the titles give rise to the occasion. Some of them are more summer themed than anything else, but it's all in good spirit. Let's just be honest, there aren't THAT many American pride indie rock songs. The playlist spans genres across the board, from indie pop (Stars) to experimental (Animal Collective) to folk (Iron & Wine). Feel free to leave a comment with your favorite Fourth of July-inspired songs. [...]
For most Americans, Fourth of July is an important day - it's the American holiday, and many people look to it as the official kick-off to the summer season (even though summer began on June 22). So, we set out to first pick keywords that exemplify the Fourth, including barbeques, picnics, parties, surfing, baseball, food, [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Agnes Obel - Between The Bars (Elliott Smith Cover) - iTunes live from Paris by Agnes Obel New music crush, Agnes Obel solidifies my love for her with a haunting cover of Elliot Smith's 'Between the Bars' (we all know what a massive fan of covers I am).
