Mark Lanegan's Blues Funeral comes out today, and if you couldn't tell how excited we were to feature an exclusive album preview this past week and you somehow thrilled we were to host the Mark Lanegan Band live this morning from the Cutting Room Studios in NYC, go back and listen to the performance again later today on our Live Performances Archive and you can practically hear John Richards' head explode when Mark calls him "bro." Awesome. Though Mark Lanegan lives in sunnier southern climes now, he's definitely a legend of Northwest [...]
Wilco played in LA this week and I missed it. Here's the worst part...I didn't even know they were playing. There was a time where I went to see 3-4 concerts a week. Now if I see that many a year...it was a good year. Part of having kids and working all the time, you give up certain things. Concerts seemed to be one of the first things to go. But now my kids are getting old enough that
Even quicker this morning: You know those Paper Bag Sessions videos that have been cropping up here and on other blogs? The ones that capture Paper Bag Records ' inimitable roster of artists delivering some pretty intimate performances for the camera (as shot by Southern Souls Mitch Fillion)? Well, the label has kindly gone one step further, by distilling a few of those performances into an audio-only format, and compiling them into The Paper Bag Sessions Volume 1 . Cuts by Austra , Cuff The Duke , Elliott BROOD , PS I [...]

Tonight's show is a triumphant return to their home turf of Toronto for Elliott Brood and with local heroes $100 as support, they take take the hall by the scruff of the neck and race through old and new material with the same breathless, almost relentless energy that's become a trademark of their records. Driven by the hard played banjos of Mark Sasso, the thrashings of Casey Laforet, the vocals of both and the frantic drums of Steve Pitkin, the band takes us on a roller coaster of emotion – from memories of family homes and dead first world war [...]
Filed under: News , Awards Chromewaves If there's one thing that the 2011 Bucky Awards taught us it's that Canadian indie music fans heart Dan Mangan . The Vancouver singer-songwriter won Best Song back in 2009 for 'Robots' so he was all too happy to accept the honour again Dec. 7 for 'Row of Houses' at the CBC Radio 3 Awards, as voted by the online radio station's fervent fans. Mangan also walked away [...]

Idée Fixe When you've spent much of your life doing one thing, and that one thing draws to a close, it's not unreasonable to decide to do something completely the opposite next. So for Bry Webb to make his first post- Constantines record Provider a quiet, mainly acoustic affair only stands to reason - particularly for anyone who heard him operating as Harbourcoats before the Cons went on hiatus. But to suggest that Provider is just the Cons frontman gone unplugged is a grave [...]

Live music picks for TUESDAY NOVEMBER 15 through SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2011. TUESDAY NOVEMBER 15 / THE AIRBORNE TOXIC EVENT / THE PHOENIX / 410 SHERBOURNE / $24.50 / 19+ The band that took its name from the Dom DeLillo classic White Noise already rocked Toronto earlier this year, and now they're back, still in support of their album All At Once . Admittedly, I felt these guys would be a one-hit wonder after their single Sometime Around Midnight was huge in 2008, but they've [...]

Canada's Elliott BROOD are excited to announce the release of their upcoming album "Days Into Years" out February 7, 2012 through Paper Bag Records. This marks the bands' third full-length album, following their nationally acclaimed "Mountain Meadows," which was short-listed for the Polaris Prize. From the opening chords of Days Into Years, the third full-length album from Toronto-based folk-rock outfit Elliott Brood, you feel like you've been listening to it forever. And I was able to listen to it repeatedly for days without feeling like it was "played out". This isn't to say that the album is a classic that will never get old. Rather, it's so easy on the ears that it blends into the background and becomes a sort of white noise. I found myself irritated not by the sound of of the band, but by the fact [...]

For the second time , I'm pleased to offer an exclusive performance video. This time it's from Toronto roots rock outfit Elliott BROOD . The band recently released its third full-length album, Days into Years , via Paper Bag Records . The label filmed the band performing a number of cuts from the disc including this one, "If I Get Old." Click below to see the trio mourn the passing of time with some help from a guitar, banjo, harmonica, and pattering drums. Courtesy of Paper Bag Records, I'm also also hosting a [...]

Elliott Brood's "Days Into Years" album offers ten songs feeling like modern rock with old-time bluegrass and folk influences. The presence of rather heavy electric guitar lines on most of the tracks adds a harder edge, and this works well when spaced with the lighter, more laid-back tracks, such as "West End Sky," featuring a banjo and a reserved drum beat. An acoustic guitar and a harmonica are also present on the album, giving it an old-time feel. "If I Get Old," the third track, catches the listener up in its moderate swinging beat. Dominated by a heavily [...]
If you haven't figured it out by now, I'm a bit of a Paper Bag Records loyalist (just go ahead and type "Paper Bag" into the search box on the right). You can expect to see a bunch of new stuff in the coming months from the likes of Austra, Young Galaxy, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Cuff The Duke that you won't be able to get [...]

Elliott BROOD kicked off the release of their third full-length album Days into Years last night by breaking in one of Sonic Boom's new locations, with its very first in-store performance. Saddled up in Toronto's landmark discount store, Honest Ed's , at 782 Bathurst, the new store is just a stones throw from its previous Annex home. Taking in the scene, the grandiose chandeliers and mirrored walls still held the discount retailer's fun-house feel, but the place also looks a lot like the old record store. A well-equipped sound system pumped out [...]
