Historical Context Fidel Castro resigns, leaving Mick Jagger as the longest running and leatheriest megalomaniac around. Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft to concentrate on philanthropy, proving that it’s the company rather than the man that may be evil. Iceland goes bankrupt. Sigur Ros cry. Some other guy is elected president of the USA. 2008 was also the International Year of the Potato and the International Year of Sanitation, apparently. Was there honestly nothing better we could celebrate? Also, after a couple of bum years in music, 2008 gave us many great albums. [...]

I have Hurricane Rick to thank for meeting Elliott Brood in studio. For the first time in a couple of years, the Mrs. and I found a cast of thousands (babysitters, ex-nanny, mother-in-law, etc. etc.) to cover for us for a getaway to Cabo. The storm emerged and delayed us for one day, which was all I needed to catch this session at good ole Shirk Music + Sound. We were huge fans of Brood's '08 release Mountain Meadows and Shirk had done some work with the band prior to [...]

Elliott Brood | Union Hall | November 24, 2009 Elliott Brood, who are in the midst of a short tour , stopped by Union Hall in Brooklyn last night. The set was a little late for a Tuesday night, but the three piece Canadian band really delivered a great set with a make-shift light show (the band claimed it cost $50). Because of a flash, you might not get a great impression of the light show, but hopefully the photos below give you a good impression of the band. [...]

The Friganza returns! It's been a while since we've posted our rundown of the weekend shows here in Halifax, but you'll have to cut us a bit of slack, as we've had a few things going on. But things, schmings, there's a lot going on, so let's get to it. If the two of us can power through the illness in our bodies and households, you'll find us at the Paragon, taking in a show we've been looking forward to for a while: The Deep Dark Woods & Elliot Brood [...]

Andy Willsher My trip to London last May yielded no shortage of fond and lasting memories, but one of the most vivid is also one of the most unremarkable and inexplicable. My plan for my first visit to the city was pretty much to pick a particular district or two for each day I was there and just wander - one day, the West End, the next day, Soho, Covent Garden and Westminster, the day after, the East End and Greenwich. Greenwich wasn't a place I had any particular prior affinity for, but I [...]

Last week I told you about a new book that I really enjoyed and learned a great deal from: Ryan Edwardson's Canuck Rock: A History of Canadian Popular Music . Now I've got a few copies of the book to giveaway! Details and a Q & A below, plus download songs by some of Ryan's favourite Canadian artists. The book deals with rock 'n' roll, folk, and other popular (read: commercially successful) forms of music in Canada from the 1950s to the present day. Although fairly broad in scope, the book is mostly interested in [...]

Frank Yang Throughout this year's process for the Polaris Music Prize , I've been saying that I'm thankful that I was on the Grand Jury last year - when there were no shortage of albums on the short list that I could get behind and the one I felt most deserving, Caribou's Andorra , won - rather than this year, where the nominees by and large leave me feeling cold. That's not saying that they're not good or great albums worthy of the prize, just [...]

Everyone is in anticipation for the 4th Annual Polaris Music Prize on September 21st. Somehow I wish I can be a jury member for this. I did a prediction awhile back and I should update on who I should think would win it. Have to say I have all the albums except for F*cked Up and K'Naan that is nominated. Except for F*cked Up, I have all their autographs on the albums. K'Naan is on a Bluefest ticket stub. Here is a review of who is nominated: Elliott [...]

Filed under: The Hit List , Canada Now in its fourth year, the Polaris Music Prize has gone from upstart award to much-coveted honour within the Canadian music scene. While still largely rooted within the "indie" milieu, this year's nominees run the gamut from Metric 's sleek alt-pop to F---ed Up 's power-punk to K'naan 's world-hop. In the run-up to Monday's live-to-air ceremony (all 10 nominated acts are performing at the awards for the first time) there's been much debate over who will take [...]

ARTIST: Elliot BROOD - [Album] with free mp3 download for 'Write It All Down For You' from Mountain Meadows DATE: 09-11-09 REVIEW BY: Bill Adams Since first appearing on record store shelves five years ago, Elliott BROOD has infiltrated the minds and hearts of listeners twice already, both times in a similar, but dramatically affecting, way each time: with a bit of the deep south in them and the shadows of the gothic craziness one can find there on them, they've started slowly [view [...]

Ten albums made the shortlist and every nominated act will be performing at Toronto's Masonic Temple -- Elliott Brood , F---ed Up , Great Lake Swimmers , Hey Rosetta! , K'naan , Malajube , Metric , Joel Plaskett , Chad VanGaalen and previous winner Patrick Watson - [...]

Very cool tune today, coming from the Canadian folk/indie-rock artist artist Dan Mangan . Robots can be found on Mangan's latest EP Roboteering , released in March of 2009; The EP contains songs from an upcoming full-length release titled Nice, Nice, Very Nice . The album will be a follow-up to Mangan's Postcards and Daydreaming which was recorded in 2005, and then re-released to Canada and the US in 2007 with the help of the Vancouver-based indie label FUM. On a side-note, Mangan has toured with notable Canadian indie acts such as Elliot [...]

Frank Yang It's funny that though I offered readers an introduction to The Wooden Sky just last month , watching them play an in-store at Sonic Boom on Monday night, the eve of release for their new album If I Don’t Come Home You’ll Know I’m Gone , it felt like I was the one being introduced to them for the first time. Previously, I'd regarded them as very good with moments of great roots-rock band - terrific at what they did but unlikely to turn anyone's world upside down. [...]

I'm a firm believer that there is no feeling more confusing than waking up from a nap. Every time I go through this ordeal the same three questions race through my painfully soggy mind: Why is there so much damn sun? How come I'm fully dressed? Should I be at work right now? After working my way through these questions this afternoon I decided to throw a post up. The song I chose to highlight is Second Son from the 2009 Polaris Music Prize nominated act Elliot Brood , and their debut full-length release Ambassador . [...]
