I always hear people saying this year was a bad one in terms of music. Not including some of the fantastic US releases ( Kozalek, J. Tillman, Black Diamond Heavies, Micah P Hinson, the dual Centro-matic/South San Gabriel, Karl Blau , Neil Halstead , and the trend to showcase your Afro-centric influences all come to mind), the bounty from the Canadian scene in '08 was impressive and for me, picking my favorites was a challenging task. While some might think that is a sign of mediocrity, I think it shows the solid collection of albums available this year. [...]
The best weeknight late-late show since... well, since the last time they played. read more

pic from the Ottawa show the following night by Blurasis . Buckle your seatbelts, Kingston - it's gonna be a big weekend music-wise and you might just need to prepare yourself. The last time we saw Elliott Brood they came storming through town with The Acorn and Plants & Animals as part of Exclaim 's Wood, Wire & Whisky tour. Now, they are hitting the Grad Club on Friday with NQ Arbuckle and Plants & Animals are in on Saturday with the radness that is Brian Borcherdt. It was just too much rawk for [...]
![Elliott Brood and O'Death - The Empty Bottle, Chicago [concert review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1357972_lg.jpg)
(Casey Laforet of Elliott Brood) Normally when I review a show, I try not to get smashed. I have a couple of beers, take some notes and try to put something together that makes sense. O'Death is far from a normal band and I was far from sober. I took a look at my notes the next day and I can't make heads or tails of them. So away we go with a very incoherent and rambling review of an excellent show. Let's start with Elliott Brood. I enjoyed Ambassador [...]

Photography by Tsuru Another mixtape already? Fuck yeah! Three songs that I'm just stuck-stuck on, pushed me, near-begged me, to get another going. This all happened yesterday as I kept tinkering with my ipod to hear the 3 songs over and over. Said "fuck it", built a playlist, started adding more songs, before you know it, I had a full CD worth of amazing tracks, pull a recent photo of mine that seemed to capture it all, a little flow tinkering in the playlist, and BLAM-O! [...]

Photography by Dona Rita Well... first things first. Happy fucking Friday! Couldn't get here soon enough, eh? Got a special one for you today, Mountain Meadows by Elliot Brood. Had a tough time figuring out how to describe this one. Alt-country? No way... Folk Rock? Maybe a little. I kinda came up with Canadian Roots Rock, but that just sounds like I'm pimping out the Canuck component (which I am). I sought some help via goole, one review called it [...]

photos by Rae Holtsabum DOWNLOAD: Elliott Brood - Second Son (MP3) Unlike Wednesday night 's Grizzly Bear show, very few people left their seats during the changeover. Okkervil River took the stage to deafening applause and immediately played "The President's Dead" and "A Hand To Take Hold Of The Scene," a pair of rockers that got the crowd going. Decked out in a black and white suit and glasses, singer/guitarist [...]

buy record from zunior :: web site :: label With the release of Mountain Meadows , Elliott Brood continues to muddy the lines between what they are and what they aren't. Right off the bat, you can't help but hear the statement the band makes with the title of the new record. If you ask anyone, the band included, you'd never hear a peep about them being a political band but you can't side step the grim history of the massacre; not when the site [...]
Elliott Brood came to Calgary to play Sled Island at a perfect time, 4 days after their latest album release, Mountain Meadows, and on a perfect summer day to go with their perfect summer music. Its really too bad they didn't have a longer set, because their music and their incredible energy was amazing to [...]

Since their beginnings with their EP, Tin Type, home of the cult hit, "O' Alberta!", to their Juno-nominated, debut full length Ambassador, Elliott BROOD have earned the praise of connoisseurs and critics alike. They've won over legions of fans with their raw and energetic live shows and their atmospheric, richly crafted records, making a name for themselves worldwide. They have completed three European tours, playing Festivals throughout Europe, Great Britian and Scandinavia, including an opening spot in Paris with Broken Social Scene. The BROOD have toured through the USA with Do, Make, Say Think and early this year, they made [...]

( Six Shooter , 2008) Shamefully, aside from a few key tracks I never really got into Elliott Brood 's last album, Ambassador . That said, "The Bridge" was just so damn awesome that I vowed to reserve judgement. In that regard it's time to take another listen, as the Toronto "death-country" outfit are back this week with the release of Mountain Meadows , their sophomore full-length. So what's the verdict? Let's just say I'll be revisiting Ambassador to see what I missed, as this [...]

Attempting to follow a traditional etiquette while simultaneously bringing something fresh and innovative to the table can be a problematic maneuver for some bands. After all, if listeners have become so accustomed to a style that has nearly become set in stone, delivering material that actually differentiates itself from the masses that have already been available for years on end can be a rare and commendable achievement. Though the precise originations date back hundreds of years, the version of folk music that most of us are familiar with traces back to the 1950s. With a lyrical fixation on relatable social [...]
Here's the last week in review... From the Schubas Amplify Live Session w/ Elliott Brood : Elliott Brood - Cadillac Dust Elliott Brood - Twill Elliott Brood - The Bridge Elliott Brood - Johnny Rook Elliott Brood - Bowling Green Chris Allen - Things Unbroken Chris Allen - I Am The Enemy [...]

We were lucky to get our hands on this session from the Schubas Amplify series sponsored by our friends at Beer Nuts , WOXY and UR Chicago . This was recorded by HearYa's own Steve Shirk at Shirk Music and Sound . That's a lot of sponsors, links and words in general. Here's the link to the original podcast . Elliott Brood is yet another great band from our friendly neighbors to the north (that's Canada you hosers ). They bring a bluegrass sound with punk attitude and [...]

Photo credit: Jelle Baars Over the last couple of years I seem to have grown a much stronger affection for public transportation. I'm not a daily commuter - I can go to work and university by bicycle - but regularly travelling back and forth by train between my hometown and Amsterdam for concerts has convinced me that the social elements of it by far outweigh the advantages of travelling by car. Sure it might be more comfortable and easy to sit behind the wheel yourself and be the captain of your own ship, but [...]

It got a little blurry last night at the Elliott Brood concert.....or Broodster as we call him in our camp (not really). I was sweatin to the oldies too...whatsup with this +25 weather in October? Anyway the Broodster played a good set, I had never seen him live before....and I wasn`t expecting such a loud sound out of 3 guys...1 with a banjo, the other playing acoustic guitar and bass (with his feet) and then a drummer Steve Pitkin [...]

Six, or seven, weeks to go until the music starts at SXSW (March 14th), I won't be there, but I guarantee you that the buzz that'll build in the indie music community will be like a pot of strong coffee to me. Last year SXSW had a massive amount of music and the same will be true this year. You may already know that the festival for the past couple of years has hosted hundreds and hundreds of mp3s of bands that were showcaseds at Austin, although this year's showcase mp3s aren't online yet, last years are still [...]
