Hooray For Earth haven't been around for very long, but their impact on synth pop has been unmistakeable. Where their MOMO EP pushed boundaries, their True Loves LP shattered expectations in every way and made for one of the best records of 2011. While sounding larger than life, this New York-based project is built around the home recordings of singer and multi-instrumentalist, Noel Heroux. I recently ran into Heroux while browsing the ' Exciting ' category on Netflix... Violent Success: When [...]

It's refreshing to encounter an artist who meets the tenets of her genre as easily as Ruby Frost. From the sequins she adores to her heart quenching tunes, Frost is a pop talent who looks to the likes of Bjork and Kate Bush for inspiration, one whose natural ability has allowed her to ignore the formula and cut straight to success. The petite singer has always written. Poetry, short stories, anything - since her early teens. Now 23, armed with a guitar and a penchant for programming her own beats, she uses lyrics to express her winsome yet [...]
Filed under: News , New Music , New Releases Javiera Estrada Haroula Rose 's new track "So Easy" strikes an interesting balance between sunny pop and a tradition of darker rock 'n' roll in the Elliott Smith vein. Utilizing unexpected chord changes, plinking piano lines, hot Beatles -esque guitar licks and smart orchestral arrangements, Haroula and co. have created a true gem. "I co-wrote the song 'So Easy' with Jonny [...]

I worship at the church of karaoke. The parishoners and I are there to confess and meditate, to feel welcomed by a community, to hear a good sermon or two, to perchance see someone speak in tongues and have the words of the Lord Bon Jovi be channeled through a mere mortal. And, of course, to have some drinks and venture to make complete fools out of ourselves. Karaoke exists in a vacuum of taste, where anomalies and exceptions always seem to arise and mess with my preconceptions. Maybe, like me, this is the only time you can really tolerate a Billy [...]
I wasn't around to see Elliott Smith's 2000 tour, but what remains of the shows is revelatory: the finest musician of his generation turns bedroom ballads into propulsive full-band jams, giving edge even to the more boldly produced efforts of XO and Figure 8 . Here's a full hour of Smith tearing through his catalog; you're going to want to go full screen for this. There are a number of audio bootlegs from this tour . This Roseland Theatre recording is a good starting point. Elliott [...]

What's up, kids? Today: not so melancholy for me, what with spring break and all, but because I know so many of you are not so lucky, this one goes out to you. Hope you make it through the day! 1. Last month, we introduced you to Portland project CASH Music , the non-profit dedicated to helping musicians by providing open-source tools for making and sharing their music. Notably, CASH Music successfully raised their pledged goal in funds via a Kickstarter campaign that's going to allow them to go forward with the project. In fact, the campaign is still happening, up until this Friday, March 9. Keeping with the classy attitude the group has displayed thus far, CASH Music is now giving out a compilation to anyone donating $10 or more to the fund, and [...]
I now consider Destry 's existence living evidence of something I've suspected for a while-a direct line between yesterday's scream-in-your-face emo generation and today's indie-folk. Destry is a project formed from members of Straylight Run and Taking Back Sunday . These are, respectively, the saddest and loudest emo bands I can remember. And yes, they are now in a folk band. As someone who was in high school when both those bands peaked, I feel like I've been subconsciously along for the ride this whole time. Looking back, Elliott Smith [...]
The non-profit offers an incredible 60-track compilation for donations.

Elliott Smith always picked interesting songs to cover. Some that were well known, some that were more obscure. But they were all good. They certainly hit my musical sweet spot. These five selections are just a sampling - he was a serial covererist - and you can find more just browsing through the shows available on the Internet Music Archive . 1. Elliott Smith - "Harvest Moon" . I'll be honest. I'm a huge Neil fan, but not that big a fan of this song. Or the album it comes from. But this is a really tender [...]
For someone who told Pitchfork they don't feel like a musician just yet, Willis Earl Beal does a fine job of conveying emotions through soulful vocals and incredibly relatable lyrics just like one would expect a (good) musician to do. In his video for "Evening's Kiss," which channels the piercing acoustic style of Elliott Smith, we see an melancholic Beal walk through what seems like a pretty typical day. The video, which Beal illustrated, tugs at the heart strings and reminds of "Waking Life." Beal's debut Acousmatic Sorcery is out [...]

Tweet Watch the new video for Aaron Embry 's song "Your Heart And Mine" below. Thanks to Josh from 1,2,3 who has now firmly planted Aaron Embry square in the middle of my musical radar with this charmingly exquisite unplugged video of his song "Your Heart And Mine" . Aaron used to tour with Elliott Smith [...]

There is an air of nostalgia that comes with Young Hines' sound. I wish I could claim the comparison to Elliott Smith and John Lennon as my own, because I think it's pretty spot on. However, the comparison was suggested by another, and as he also pointed out, comparing anyone to those two fantastic musicians seems like the perfect set up for failure - like being told that The Dark Knight is possibly one of the greatest films of all time only to find out that is actually somewhere between good and [...]

Ah, Valentines Day. The holiday in which we snuggle up with our loved ones, take them to dinner, and give them fancy things. Or plop down with a cheap handle of vodka and terrible television and pass out at 11:30. However you like to celebrate, one thing can be sure - music can help set the mood for any situation, and Metrojolt is here to help you out. House - House music is generally thought of high energy and full of heavy bass, but like every genre if you strip it down to its core [...]
