Elliott Smith was born on August 6, 1969, and thus, August is Elliott Smith Month, according to his onetime label, Kill Rock Stars. To celebrate, KRS has been generously offering fans alternate versions of some old Elliott tracks : previously unheard versions of songs that appeared on Smith's 1995 and '97 releases, Elliott Smith and Either/Or , respectively. It's been a bittersweet experience, hearing anew these songs that have been etched into our collective memory. Not only do they remind us of the talent lost, but they capture the artist just as [...]
Adam Asher wants you to stop whining and open up your voice to new possibilites.

"Angeles" has always been one of my favorite Elliott Smith songs. It's a beautiful, sparkling ballad that highlights nearly every one of Smith's strengths: powerful songwriting, a gorgeous melody, and Smith's cedar-y and heartfelt vocals. In celebration of what would be Smith's 43rd birthday, Kill Rock Stars has been releasing alternate versions of some of his best known songs on his Bandcamp page. First we heard a version of " Alameda " with a different version of the tunes' lyrics. Later they released a different take on the track "Punch and Judy." And then earlier this week they released a [...]

Another week in August means that we get another track from Kill Rock Stars "Elliott Smith Month" release. Last week was Punch & Judy and before that was "Alameda" . Where the other "Alternate Versions" could justifiably be called such, this version of "Angeles" is more of a demo as it's completely stripped down and has Smith stating at the end "that was called Angeles", leading us to believe that it may have been a pre- Either/Or demo. Listen to the studio version below and see for yourself how intimate this version is in [...]

Angeles (alternate version) by Elliott Smith So here's a change in our alternate versions of Elliott Smith tracks that Kill Rock Stars is dropping in honor of what would have been Smith's 43rd birthday. You can read my take on the other two, "Alameda" and "Punch & Judy" where designated. What's the change? Well, our previous versions featured more instrumentation than on the album ("Punch and Judy" had a whooole different tempo), whereas this version of "Angeles" is more stripped down than [...]

Stereogum Kill Rock Stars has been generous with the Elliott Smith alternate takes this August - Elliott Smith Month, they're calling it, in honor of his 8/6 birthday. First we got " Alameda ," then " Punch And Judy ," plus an offer of a scrapped trumpet-led version of " Needle In The Hay " in exchange for an email address. "Angeles" is arguably Elliott Smith's most-loved song, and while this alternate take doesn't shed much new light on the composition, it's a thing of pretty intense [...]

Kill Rock Stars continues to release alternate takes of Elliott Smith 's classic tear-jerkers. Following cuts of "Alameda" and "Punch and Judy" now comes the fragile ballad "Angeles". The original highlighted 19972s Either/Or , and the alternate version can be found below via Kill Rock Stars’ Bandcamp (via Pitchfork ). FYI: The label is reissuing Either/Or on 180 gram vinyl this month in honor of Smith’s birthday. You can pre-order the album right now at the Kill Rock Stars store .

As previously mentioned , throughout August Kill Rock Stars will be sharing unreleased Elliott Smith tracks (mainly alternate versions of classic Smith tracks), and today we're presented with an alternate version of one of his most famous songs, 'Angeles', taken from his 1997 album Either/Or . Check it out below. Angeles (alternate version) by Elliott Smith
Click here to view the embedded video. A pparently Kyle James Hauser and I share more than just a first name, we both seem to love Elliott Smith's "Somebody That I Used to Know." Check out this recording of Hauser's banjo laden cover of the Elliott Smith classic, recorded in tribute in Denver, CO for a screening of the Smith documentary "Searching For Elliott Smith," which as a fan I think you should definitely see. And well if you aren't hip to Elliott Smith, take a crash course over [...]

Another Elliott Smith recording was culled from the vaults today in celebration of his birthday week. Following his alternate-lyric take on "Alameda" and piano/harmonica arrangement of "Needle in the Hay" comes Either/Or 's "Punch and Judy," put to tape twice as fast as the original with more hi-hat work than you'll spot on other Smith drumming efforts. It almost feels like a tune we haven't heard yet from Smith, which - coming from one of the best songwriters ever - is a very good thing. Stream/buy the new "Punch and Judy" above, while the aforementioned "Needle in the [...]

Punch and Judy (alternate version) by Elliott Smith

Punch and Judy (alternate version) by Elliott Smith The alternate version of "Punch and Judy" is Kill Rock Star's second taste of alternate versions of Smith's work in honor of what would be the singer's 43rd birthday. In contrast to our first helping, an alternate version of "Alameda," this version of "Punch and Judy" seems about as far from the album version as possible. The sheen and slowed down surfy guitar (a seemingly lackadaisical descendent of "Kiwi Maddog 20/20") is replaced with an anxious riff which [...]

Last week we got to hear an alternate version of "Alameda" in celebration of Smith's birthday which would have been on Monday. And now as promised Kill Rock Stars has released another new track this week, once again it's off if Smith's acclaimed album Either/Or . The original version is definitely a somber affair in comparison to this new, alternate version which picks up the tempo and adds some nice single string guitar flare to the intro and verse. Later in the month, Kill Rock Stars be reissuing Either/Or [...]

All these years later, it's amazing that there are still unheard Elliott Smith recordings out there, but there totally are. The man would've turned 43 this week, and Kill Rock Stars is marking the occasion by posting things like an alternate version of " Alameda " and now this. The unheard version of " Punch And Judy " is a jittery, falling-over-itself thing, one strikingly different from the relatively mellow and assured version that appeared on Either/Or . Listen below.
