This week I thought I would visit three interesting and exciting moments in the musical history of the television program Saturday Night Live. While a whole radio show could be made out of the excellent musical performances that this show has produced over the years its beginnings, and numerous TV specials have been made surrouding such performances, i'm not sure if a radio program has focused on these performances. Today I will focus on three moments, two of which created controversy with the show and the shows producer Lorne Michaels. Elvis Costello & The [...]

Elvis Costello and the Attractions. "Goon Squad"

No, not really. My standard excuse for not doing drugs, and I think it's a good one, is that I struggle enough to contain the one in which I do partake, which is alcohol. Adding another self-destructive pharmaceutical to the list would just be plain fucking silly. And so, contrary to Mrs. Toad (who did, in fairness, pull the plug a long fucking time ago), I have never partaken of anything more horrifying than marijuana. I think this would make me a shit parent. "Don't do drugs" "Why, Dad?" "Umm, I dunno, but mostly because they're [...]

The year 1979 was a busy one for Elvis Costello. He completed the album Armed Forces with his band Elvis Costello & The Attractions was on tour in American on the Armed Funk Tour and produced an album for The Specials. Controversy would be brought into his world, when in April of 1979 while on tour he made some drunken derogatory remarks about James Brown and Ray Charles that were taken out of context during a conversation with Stephen Stills and Bonnie Bramlett at a hotel bar in Columbus, Ohio. Costello apologized for the remarks at [...]

by Will Rigby Leon Payne's song "Psycho" is legendary, and rightly so. Payne was a blind country singer and songwriter who has the distinction of having two of his songs recorded by Hank Williams: "Lost Highway" (listen to Leon's version here ) and "They'll Never Take Her Love From Me." Other well-known songs he wrote are "I Love You Because," which Elvis Presley recorded at his first session for Sun Records in 1954, and "Things Have Gone To Pieces," originally a hit for George Jones. On a day off in [...]

Welcome to 73 Friday again! A little late today as I was distracted by the new 13th sign (see last post) but anyway here's Elvis Costello And The Atractions Live at Hollywood High recorded in 1978. I found this EP at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ the other day. I think its from a recent Record Store day goody but I don't know. I got the last copy and that is all that matters. The whole show is available if you'd like to hear the master of pop in his prime. [...]

"Several of the songs on "Get Happy" had been played on the mysteriously named "Armed Funk Tour" in the spring of 1979, our last American trip for over two years. However our first trial sessions revealed our "road" arrangements to be trite, brittle, and uncomfortably close to the rapidly dating style which was now called [...]

With the continuing onslaught of hot weather I'm going to keep this intro brief, cause frankly I'm just tired of sweating and I'm trying just enjoy some frigid AC before going outside. This week's Mix Tape is dedicated to all the working folks out there. We got six loosely themed songs based on going to work and being at work. So sit back, enjoy and play it loud... We kick things off appropriately with Elvis Costello & The Attractions' Welcome To The Working Week , from their [...]

I think it's pretty cool that there's a day set aside each year just to recognize what is arguably Elvis Costello's greatest album. Oh c'mon! I'm just kidding. I served my time in the U.S. military and I know what Armed Forces Day is. It's probably too late in the day for most of you to run out and do anything to mark the occasion, but just take a sec this evening and appreciate the men and women who are serving in the Armed Forces. Some background, in [...]

Well, my friends... The end of music bloggerin' as you & I know it may be ending soon. It's true. You see, over in Ireland, there's a group called IMRO that is basically a union for music artists that have decided it would be a good thing to force music bloggers who host music on their site to pay licensing fees to "play" the music on the site if it's available in Ireland (of course it's available in Ireland, as far as I know, none of block any countries). [...]

If you happen to follow any music bloggers or record nerd on Twitter you may have noticed a major bump in traffic on Saturday morning. I too follow a slew of my peers and was keeping tabs on folks and what they happened to score on Record Store Day . Just before noon I noticed a Tweet from WOXY's Shiv lamenting not getting his hands on a copy of Elvis Costello & the Attraction's re-issue of the "Live at Hollywood High" 73. Having [...]
Lots of cussin' on this episode - but man, we sure enjoy ourselves, don't we? What random things will pop up an our iPods when we switch to random play? (Don't read the playlist - be surprised with us) Also, don't forget - Tyler is DJing with DJ Tower this Thursday, April 8 at ZOMG at the Milk Bar. PLAYLIST: Happy Mondays - Donovan (live) Oasis - Casts No Shadow Elvis Costello & The Attractions - New Amersterdam Curve - Die Like A Dog (live) Yo La Tengo - Autumn Sweater Casey [...]

Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Shipbuilding ( buy ) Costello´s bittersweet commentary on the Falklands Crisis , featuring none other than Chet Baker on trumpet. And that´s a small miracle in itself, as Chet famously wasn´t too fond of everything rock ´n´ roll. Rumour has it Costello originally wanted Miles Davis for the job, who wasn´t available. I personally prefer Robert Wyatt´s crystal clear earlier interpretation of Shipbuilding , but this one´s well worth it, too. With special thanks to Chet.

For one reason or another, cover songs tend to catch a bad rap. Even when our favorite artists record a cover, our interest usually lasts all of two or three listens before we are ready to move on to something else, something original . In this age of "green" living, why are we so put off by the idea of recycling a song? Perhaps, over the years, we have been lured to and held hostage in far too many garages and basements and forced to listen to our friends' high school bands-complete with the lead guitarist's eight-year-old kid sister [...]

The "Be My Baby" intro is possibly the most most iconic drum beat in pop music. The Phil Spector -penned "boom, boom boom, cha!" is instantly recognizable and the beat has been been both duplicated and used in a number of variations by artists time and time again. The Jesus and Mary Chain liked the beat enough to use it four times on their debut album, Psychocandy (most notably in "Just Like Honey") and since then it seems to have become a staple in indie pop music. The beat has endured from The Ronettes [...]
This is what i'm laughably calling my January mix, despite it being already ten days into the following month. But hey! In my defence, it's been hectic, and then i was away for a week from the end of January, but believe it or not, the mix was made in advance. i just failed to upload it, for whatever reason. Anyway, i have started working in the office of a cheese factory (don't laugh, fuckers). We don't have a radio and i assume i'm not allowed to listen to music off my phone either, so here is a [...]

(Pope gets cross) The BBC One news made me laugh tonight, when the newsreader described that woman who lunged at the Pope during Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. The assailant "grabbed his vestments" apparently! (No wonder he looked so shocked!) I'm sure the Pontiff will bear her no ill will, anyway. Oh yes, he's very much a papal person is Benedict XVI. *tish* Elvis Costello and the Attractions - I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down mp3
