Along with getting the industry all hot and bothered by further teasing the release of D'Angelo's first album in over 13 years, Roots mastermind Questlove hinted last night at an equally-salivating collaborative album with Elvis Costello . Now, in a followup with Billboard , the man with over four terabytes of music has expanded upon this particular writer's dream partnership (sorry, Hall & Oates & Danzig). "It was really love at first sight," Questlove said of Costello, who's made three [...]

D'Angelo' s long-in-the-works third album is "99% done" and will likely be turned over to RCA Records in time for a 2013 release. At least, that's according to The Roots' Questlove , who serves as the album's producer. "All last week, I was in the studio finishing (the album)," Questlove explained in a new interview with Billboard . "We spent close to 18 hours, well not me personally because I have to go to 'Fallon,' but usually right after work. He's the only person that I'll actually go to the studio with and [...]
Faster Louder lists the top 10 Elvis Costello albums. Lynn Coady offers tips for holding a literary reading. 20 year-end music lists were added yesterday to the master aggregation , including the Independent's best album covers of the year. 41 lists were added Friday to the master aggregation of year-end online "best books of 2012" lists [...]

One year later (exactly), and here we go again. I'm about to revisit a recurring theme, trade one great city for another, much as I've been doing for the last six years and nearly four months. (I don't call this blog "Theme for Great Cities" for nothing.) I'm all packed and ready to fly... tomorrow. On this date in 2012, I was preparing to leave Bangkok tomorrow for what would end up being a two-month return to Melbourne , and now I'm about to embark on Bangkok-to-Melbourne one more time. How did Bangkok change me this [...]
Hopefully this list will inspire you to get off your couch and check out some of these bands live. We all need a little rock n' roll to make us feel good. If you have additions to the list please email me at amy(at)rockerzine(dot)com and I will be happy to include them in the next update. Click the band you want to see dates for below, or scroll to see em all! The Alarm *~* Dave [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , The Hit List , Music Appreciation Getty | Getty It's been a great year for music. But what's been even greater is how musicians have been paying tribute to each other's work, as well as creating their own. Yes, we listeners scored some great original music, but there's something to be said for artists like Feist , Destroyer , and Bruce [...]

Aztec/Mayan calendar ( source ) NASA thinks otherwise , but according to the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar, the world will end today. Even if the Mayans couldn't rightly predict their own demise, who knows? We may have only one more day left on Earth. If that's the case, we're going out swinging! All day, KEXP DJs are playing songs to soundtrack the end of the world, and we've collected some videos to go along with some of their apocalyptic soundtrack picks. It's all about partying, the end of the world, and partying at the [...]

It’s time again for Friday on My Mind , our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. For this week, we are looking at some of the most Memorable Musical Performances given on Saturday Night Live . In 1974, Canadian producer and comedy writer Lorne Michaels was asked by NBC to create a new show to fill in an open Saturday night show slot which had previously been running reruns of The Tonight [...]

This past year, I finally put my eyes to the test, armed myself with a semi-expensive camera, and hit the photo pits. Now, I had previously wiggled my way up to the front of the crowds with a point-and-shoot in our early days, but I'd never really attempted to put myself in the shoes of a professional photographer. Within five minutes, I realized how stressful and yet how thrilling the position can be. There's a sense of community that photographers have that writers never really will. While some express lens-envy, and yeah it's really ridiculous and uber-showy, most [...]
"That's Me" is a new single from Elvis Costello . The song appears on the upcoming all-star recording of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County , a southern gothic supernatural musical from co-conspirators Stephen King, John Mellencamp and T Bone Burnett. Costello's song is one of many from an eclectic ensemble of [...]

Normally I would advocate adopting a position of wariness when someone says 'hey listen to my friends music its really good', lord knows we have all been lead down digital avenues of dreary indie in the name of loyalty to friends (a loyalty I myself often exploited in the name of indie stardom) but in this case I make an exception. I assure you James', alias Fugitive Orchestra, music is good and at the very least interesting. The lyrics are mature, able to convey drama without wailing hysterically or spelling out emotion with a black marker. There are some lovely [...]

Over the course of the last couple of months, we've amused ourselves greatly at Flavorpill central with our "extremely silly photos of..." series — we've done writers , artists , and historical figures , and now we're turning our attention to a corner of culture that arguably takes itself more seriously than anyone: the music industry! After the jump, we've put together a collection of extremely silly photos of extremely serious musicians, so if you've ever wanted to see Blixa Bargeld in the kitchen or Joy Division pretending to be Monty Python, then click through and get [...]

We can only assume Pitbull 's new album, Global Warming , is a tribute to the warm reception from his recent near-Arctic trip to Kodiak, Alaska. However, somehow we doubt it. Pitbull isn't the only one putting a new record out this week though. Nicki Minaj reloads or re-ups Pink Friday AGAIN this week, and a few other artists (such as The Faint and t.a.t.u. ) do the same for older albums that actually warrant reissues. Elvis Costello collects songs from films for In Motion Pictures , [...]

Stephen King, John Mellencamp, and producer T Bone Burnett's southern gothic supernatural musical, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County , will arrive as a star-studded CD/DVD on March 19th via Hear Music/Concord Music Group. Thirteen years in the making, a version of the musical made its debut at Atlanta's Alliance Theater this past spring. For this release, however, Burnett tagged Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Neko Case, and many more to perform renditions of the musical's songs. These will be paired with key dialogue excerpts by a bevy of Hollywood talent, specifically Matthew McConaughey, Samantha Mathis, [...]

Yesterday we ran a series of hilariously negative reviews of classic albums , and noted at the time that we could have cited several more from the inimitable Robert Christgau, a man who's never been shy about putting his most controversial foot forward when it comes to music. Christgau's hairy-chested prose, idiosyncratic tastes, and habit of reviewing himself rather than the album in question have often perplexed us, as has his Dean of American Rock Critics™ schtick. In view of this, after the jump, we've set out a selection of mystifying reviews — both good and bad — of notable records, and [...]

New Cover Song Names on the Rise Having missed the much talked about Shovels & Rope on their tour which took them through Boston, I immediately found myself regretting it... Thankfully little more than a week or so later the duo were back in town opening for Jack White . The music I heard that night, an unraveled but playfully articulate set, stomped and shouted it's way into my heart. Later [...]

Six pack time, inna cover stylee. Just some ole personal faves is all. Codeine dissects Joy Division, the Beasts Of Bourbon take on Eddie Noack, and Bob Mould & Vic Chessnut join up to tackle Gram Parsons. The other Elvis runs away with a Bacharach/David classic, Magazine visits the Captain, while the Mo-dettes go and get stoned. Don't forget to buy some albums if you like what you hear ok? Codeine - Atmosphere Beasts Of Bourbon - Psycho Bob Mould & Vic Chessnut - Hickory Wind [...]

Coffeeeeeee... so very, very much coffee! Christ on a bike, I know I need to not be dozing off at my desk at the moment but I've had so much fucking coffee in the last couple of days I am starting to go fucking cross-eyed. Mostly this is down to trying to get my head together after the Cold Seeds 2/Wolf Bear Crystal Toads recording sessions over the weekend which, despite my lack of real direct involvement, still managed to knock the usually ruthlessly efficient Toad machine somewhat cockeyed for a few days. Anyhow, the disruption [...]

Oh, behave! Get your mind out of the gutter! Ain't nobody humpin' around here? In this context, "Hump Day" refers to the middle of the work week, which, depending on whether you tend toward glass half empty or half full, means "Yay, halfway to the weekend!" or "Damn, still half a week to the weekend!" For me, this particular Hump Day meant jogging around Lumpini Park at 6am followed by a trip to the Government Complex Commemorating His Majesty Building on the outskirts of Bangkok to extend my holiday visa for 30 more days, which will keep me [...]
