Satan made a mansion for love to live when it dies. M. Cothran's first visuals for his upcoming Coma Cinema record Posthumous Release just premiered over on Impose . In light, or rather dark, dark, darkness of his latest Elvis Depressedly tape h olo pleasures on April 16th and this new Coma Cinema slated for June 11th, I think you'll know where to find me this summer. Dig on that rock n roll outro. Stay up.
If you couldn't tell from their name, Elvis Depressedly is a group of early-twenty-somethings that make mostly sad, lo-fi music for people who don't think they're too cool to listen to a group called Elvis Depressedly. Their newest EP, holo pleasures, is all about frontman Matt Cothran - also of Coma Cinema and "Weird Honey" shines as the EP's bittersweet centerpiece, demonstrating exactly why Cothran is one of my favorite up and coming songwriters. "If there's a cold spot in hell, I hope you get it/If there's a cold spot in hell, I [...]

Noel Thrasher , a folk pop solo project from South Carolina through Mat Cothran has released a debut album titled an introduction to noel thrasher . These tape tracks include an introduction by Justin Blackburn , the intuitive inner healer, a collection of acoustic melancholic sing-alongs, and the original version of cry babies , a track also recorded by Elvis Depressedly . Pick up an introduction to noel thrasher from her Bandcamp page . From the Coma Cinema Facebook page , "years ago, before [...]

Muddy, depressive pop music that reminds me of this old Elf Power album I used to listen to, but better. I've burned his entire back catalog onto a single disc and have been listening to it obsessively over the past few days. Good stuff. holo pleasures by elvis depressedly

We heard a promising new cut from Mat Cothran's Elvis Depressedly project earlier this month along with news of a full-length by his indie-pop outfit Coma Cinema due out this summer. Before the former LP, Holo Pleasures , drops tomorrow via Birdtapes , today brings another taste off the set, as well as the new single "Satan Made A Mansion" from Coma Cinema's Posthumous Release LP. Among the three, "Pepsi/Coke Suicide" has made the most indelible mark so far, but they're all steeped in understated charm - thanks in part to the medium-fi recording [...]

“if there’s a cool spot in hell, I know you'll get it.” Elvis Depressedly is the alter-ego of Coma Cinema front man Mat Cothran . Since early 2011, he has released five free albums on his bandcamp page and is set to release a 7" entitled Holo Pleasures on April 16th via Birdtapes . Weird Honey is less somber [...]
Mat Cothran's feelings have always been too woe-is-me and dramatic for me. That being said, Elvis Depressedly 's (his sort of newish group with Delaney Mills and Eric Jones - he is of course still better known as that dude who is Coma Cinema ) "Weird Honey" features maybe my new favorite line: 'If there's a cool spot in hell, I hope you get it'; and then, 'I know you'll get it.' Wouldn't you want someone to say that to you? I would. "Weird honey" is all, well, weirdly sweet with talk of the aforementioned weird honey's purity [...]

'if there's a cool spot in hell / I hope you'll get it' Isn't that just the ultimate declaration of modern love? Multi-talented singer songwriter Mat Cothran has released music under the Coma Cinema moniker for several years now, and whilst all the output under that moniker has been exemplary, it would be offense to simply write-off Elvis Depressedly as another side-project. With this usual self-depreciating wit combining with a cunningly realistic sense of broken faith, Weird Honey is one of Elvis Depressedly's finest tracks to date. Check it out.

If we learned anything at all from chillwave it's that sometimes it's acceptable for strength of songwriting to take the backseat as long as the VIBE is on point, which sounds like a load of vapid nonsense but let's be real, like, WAVVES is great but mostly if you wanna feel stoned without actually smoking weed. And that doesn't make the music any less authentic, it just means the hooks lie in the sensations rather than the melodies. But if you can nail both, you've hit on something truly special - and that's exactly what California-based bummer pop trio, [...]

South Carolinian hazy pop purveyors Elvis Depressedly are set to release holo pleasures , their latest collection of fidelically-challenged songs, on April 16th via Birdtapes. Originally conceived as a solo outing from Mat Cothran (Coma Cinema), Elvis Depressedly has recently expanded to a trio, with the addition of Eric Jones on bass and Delaney Mills on drums. The songs that comprise holo pleasures are the first songs which were written within a group context, and they certainly feel more collaborative than previous tracks. Blending subtle shoegaze tendencies with opaque musical references to early 90’s 4AD artists, Cothran, [...]
Elvis Depressedly is the alter-ego of Coma Cinema front man Mat Cothran. Since early 2011, he has released five free albums on his bandcamp page and is set to release a full length entitled Holo Pleasures on April 16th via Birdtapes. The first single, Pepsi/Coke Suicide , is a slow, somber dirge that floats atop waves of woozy guitars and numb synth pads. The song contains the warm, lo-fi feel that's heard throughout all of his releases but with more body. I [...]
A new, downtrodden track from Elvis Depressedly-a.k.a. Mat Cothran, a.k.a. Coma Cinema -and, yeah, it's as depressing and gloom as one would anticipate. Still, the song has an eerie quality to its sadness. It's the kind of sadness that feels like it's approaching the end of something-or, rather, the edge of something. Elvis Depressedly's next album, holo pleasures , will be out via Birdtapes in the middle of April.

Chris at Lewis and His Blog caught me up to speed with Mat Cothran this week, reporting that the South Carolina songwriter will follow a prolific 2012 with more new records this year from his bands Coma Cinema and Elvis Depressedly . "Pepsi/Coke Suicide" is a preview track from the Depressedly project due on April 16th, and despite that name, its sonic bed of sludge-buzz guitar, et al., when he sings the main hook ("Always real, always right, always all right.") a glimmer of hope somehow bleeds through. That said, simple chords and a fine [...]
Stream: Elvis Depressedly - "Pepsi/Coke Suicide" Elvis Depressedly has dropped a new track from the upcoming release, Holo Pleasures and it really feels like steady improvement. Mat Cothran has been recording this album with his full band and it really shows with the fullness of the sound. In many ways the instrumentation feels warm on this track, but if you are familiar with Cothran at all you know that his lyrics are going to directly conflict with that. It creates an air of uneasy comfort and it really makes the song stick out, [...]

420 love songs (second 40) by obama You may remember that about a month ago we posted the first 40 in what a collective of underground musicians are hoping will be 420 love songs. This time, the project has expanded to make room for a lot of new faces; bringing the chances of this thing reaching 420 songs so much higher. As far as the style, sound of these tracks go, they're all pretty rough and lo-fi, which I know won't appeal to everybody. I will also say that a lot [...]

Julia Brown's full length album to be close to you has just been released. The release has a lo-fi aesthetic, with toy keyboards, guitars and various other instruments being used in the recording process between Autumn of last year up until last month. The songs as expected are amazing; full of true emotion and anthemic lyrics within an ambient masterpiece of an album. Tonight they are playing a show at College Park with Coma Cinema / Elvis Depressedly , Alex G , [...]
