We're halfway through 2009. I'm compiling the Top 10 So Far (Albums and songs this year, for the last time[!?!]) and I thought this would be a fitting little video to post. One of the albums that may/may not be on the Top 10, most certainly in the year-end Top 30, will be the newest one from Elvis Perkins in Dearland . Their eponymous album is near perfect, though upon my first listen I was more attracted to the first half of the record. Eventually [...]
I don't post enough on the greatness of Elvis Perkins In Dearland , whose new self-titled album is one of my favorite records of the year. If you're just being introduced to the band, you won't want to miss the amazing video above for "Chains, Chains, Chains." You can also grab a free and legal download of "Shampoo" below. Chicago fans of the band should not miss the two upcoming dates at the end of the month on July 25th ( Subterranean ) and July 26th ( Wicker Park Festival ). [...]

Elvis Perkins in Dearland's latest video offering is for their song "Chains, Chains, Chains" off of this year's self titled album. It comes to us courtesy of the imaginative mind of Sean Pecknold, local maker of the ever-fascinating Fleet Foxes videos.

Filed under: Video , Exclusive The video for 'Chains, Chains, Chains' -- the latest single from Elvis Perkins in Dearland -- seems to be swimming (literally) in symbolism and insinuation. There are rising tides, silhouettes, aquatic birds and then, of course, embryonic sea people entangled in a womb-like waterworld. Or something of the sort. It all adds up to an eye-catching video that is mystical and imaginative and perfectly suited for Perkins' poetic hymn. Perkins gives director Sean Pecknold credit for that. "The band and I really just [...]

MP3: Elvis Perkins - May Day! MP3: Elvis Perkins in Dreamland - Doomsday MP3: Those Darlins - Wild One All photos: Greg Szeto Not to be reductionist by any means, but if you've ever wondered whether riot grrl attitude would mesh well with honky-tonk country, look no farther than Tennessee's Those Darlins . Much more than that simple formula, they now stand as one of my [...]
Day 3 of Bonnaroo promised to be huge. Unfortunately, after going to bed after 4 am and waking up to the ridiculously humid weather in Tennessee, the only thing I could foresee being huge was my headache. I honestly don't know how some of those people can show up to this fest and hardly eat or sleep, while drinking and doing drugs and still function enough to make it from band to band. Is there some secret Bonnaroo trick that I was missing as a first timer? After downing a few Advils and using a water [...]
According to our message board, the opening act to Tuesday's Elvis Perkins in Dearland show in Columbus didn't show up so he played a solo set before the entire band took the stage. Check out this video from surlyshirley999 :

After four long days, which featured torrential downpours, grueling heat, lots of mud, and over a hundred of music's best acts, the 2009 edition of the Bonnaroo Music Festival is now and will forever will be a memory. Join us, while we remember and review the festival that was Bonnaroo '09… Sun and The Boss. It was hard not to be excited about those two things as Saturday descended on the green fields of Bonnaroo. And that's without mentioning everything else making up day three. Trent? Wilco? The Mars Volta? A lack of mud, [...]
On Elvis Perkins' first album, Ash Wednesday, he sounded like a mixture of Bob Dylan and Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel. I even initially mistook the song "While You Were Sleeping" for a lost Neutral Milk Hotel song, due to Perkins' uncanny resemblance to Mangum's nasally voice and the use of an excellent horn section. On this new album,Elvis Perkins In Dearland , he mostly just sounds like himself. Sure, the comparisons to Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Mangum are still valid, but you wouldn't mistake a song onDearland for an Aero plane Over The Sea B-side. Sophomore slump is [...]

A warm, filling soup is always a very welcome meal after a long day at work. Even better then when you can enjoy that soup with friends and good music. Kasey prepared this tomato, chorizo soup with cabbage and chickpeas last week for a meal with some good friends who were visiting from L.A. It is a slightly spicy soup, and could serve well to hearten a weary soul. Likewise, it is a lively dish, and it is a good meal to share with friends encouraging good conversation. Because of this, Elvis Perkins in Dearland 's self-titled album is [...]

"We're going to start going backwards, if you don't mind," Elvis Perkins, taking the stage alone at Bell House, warmly informed his expectant crowd before beginning a song about endings. It was just him, vocals straining with folk-pop sweetness, and his acoustic, working through the optimistic melodies of "1 2 3 Goodbye" as the Dearland part of Elvis Perkins in Dearland crept to their positions on stage. It was a promising start from a musician who, through two albums now, has shown lots of promising-startness. But then we started going backwards some more. Perkins's [...]

This show is quite a bit after the fact now, but I still wanted to put up these photos. Since I'm so behind on this, I'll keep the review short. What it basically boils down to is that it was a very fun night of good, not great, music filled with instruments of all sorts: trombones, steel guitars, tubas, saxophones, even a harmonium. The Woes are an incredibly entertaining mix of New Orleans style jazz and classic rock, plus a bunch of other diverse genres thrown into the mix. They're the type of band that I'd love to [...]

Elvis Perkins' insistence on changing his band's name from, well, Elvis Perkins to Elvis Perkins in Dearland may be a subtle one, but it also sends a not so subtle message: this isn't a one-man show. And throughout Wednesday's sold-out performance at the Bell House, the other three members of the band ("in Dearland" if you will) showcased the collaborative spirit and shared love of Dixie music that so readily informs Perkins' sophomore album - titled, you guessed it, Elvis Perkins in Dearland - and helped bring the whole 90-minute [...]
To whet your whistle for the Elvis Perkins in Dearland show at the Bell House tonight, we've got another outstanding video from the band's Gold Room Session. You may remember we posted the more upbeat "Doomsday" from this same session a few months back; well now it's time to take things down a notch with the more somber "Hours Last Stand", which finds Perkins doing a fine Orbison warble amidst the relaxed environs. Tonight figures to be decidedly more energetic, if you've ever seen the band play live you know what I mean. Too bad it's sold out! [...]
Wrap Up: Elvis Perkins in Dearland @ Outback Lodge, Charlottesville VA - 5.18.09 : Graham and I caught Elvis Perkins in Dearland last night at the Outback Lodge, one of the few small venues left in Charlottesville (it seems like at least one small venue closes per year here). We missed the opening act, The Woes, but they joined Elvis Perkins in Dearland for several songs last night. It had been almost 8 years since I've been to Outback Lodge, and I was pretty impressed with the turnout on a Monday night in a college town where [...]
