Kevin from So Much Silence turned me on to Elvis Perkins during his last trip to L.A. Thank you, sir. After reading a brief bio of Perkins, it's easy to see where he is coming from in terms of his lyrical content. The man has been through a lot. Perkins album Ash Wednesday sees wide release February 20th -- here is a little preview. [...]

I've come across some quality new music this week. Everyone's looking forward to albums like Neon Bible and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, but most of the time it's the releases that catch you by surprise that end up being the best. The Ponys new album "Turn the Lights Out" is now out there waiting for you... I'm liking it a lot after a few listens. I was a fan of their last release, Celebration Castle, but I was by no means anticipating [...]
By about August, I had begun formulating year-end lists in my head. I was mentally shuffling songs and albums up and down and back and forth when it finally hit me earlier this month: Who cares? The overwhelming volume of year-end lists (Largehearted Boy is keeping track: A-M and N-Z ) has watered down the process, although I still kept tabs on lists from bloggers and writers I especially admire ( Chromewaves , Gorilla vs. Bear , Marathonpacks , Bows + Arrows , for starters). There is nothing [...]
Elvis Perkins - " Ash Wednesday " The strange thing about this song is that it has absolutely nothing to do with the reasons why I fell in love with Elvis Perkins and his band when I saw them live at ACL this year. He never played it, and in fact I'm not sure it would have fit well with his charming, engaging, almost magical set. I first heard the track much earlier this year, and ended up playing it on the next radio show I had scheduled - which coincidentally fell on Ash Wednesday. [...]

written c. December 10, 2006 So, I had someone comment me asking where my "well thought out post" was, and well, I am not sure. I wrote an 8 page paper, studied 11 chapters of statistics, and drew up a few things for my secret, which were all time consuming... last night. With my sudden burst of productivity, comes another lame rendition of me rambling. Okay, I don't know if you know this, but
The Head Set Finally released their album Way Pass Used . I was highly enjoyed this last year and he it is reworked and lengthened for the public. Here's a newish song off that album. Good stuff. The Head Set - Look & Feel [mp3] Elvis Perkins Uh oh. Ultra Grrrl is on to them. But what's that? A huge picture of My Chemical Romance? I'm confused. Yeah, just scroll past [...]

DOWNLOAD: Elvis Perkins - Mayday (MP3) SARA SCHAEFER @ UCB, NYC | FEB 1, 2006 ( CRED ) You may know Sara Schaefer the comedian, who, as host of Video Gaga at NYC's UCB Theatre , has worked with musical acts like Elvis Perkins , Lisa Loeb , and Dujeous . You've seen her interviewed on Gothamist and gossiped about on the Apiary . And speaking of the [...]

My copy of Elvis Perkins' Ash Wednesday came yesterday from Insound â€" finally . I'd been waiting for what seemed an eternity. Seriously, you guys. This album is pretty amazing. I'd already been obsessed with the song While You Were Sleeping , and the rest of the album ... well ... sheesh. If I had one regret about missing the ACL Festival this year, it was missing Elvis' set. I can't help but be moved by lines like this (from It's Only Me ): "It's only me, [...]
OK, after considerable throat-clearing, it's time for me to actually write something about next week's Troika Music Festival , held at various Durham sites on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. (Full schedule here .) But, boy, is it daunting. So much good music in such a short time -- lots of bands that I know and am fond of, quite a few that I've been meaning to pay more attention to, some that are brand new to me. If I had nothing to do for the next week, maybe I'd try to pull off a See You [...]

Day two of the festival got off to a smoother start - no nerves, much more sleep (we decided to call it an early night on Friday instead of checking out the MSTRKRFT after party), and breakfast at Maria's Taco Xpress had us in great moods and ready to face a long, long day of music. We got to the park in time to check out Phoenix , one of my must-sees for this year's festival. I caught the band at Vanderbilt's Rites of Spring music festival last year and they definitely impressed - their live show kicks [...]
Anthony Perkins ' Son, Elvis Perkins , is a great singer / songwriter. Stereogum did a posting about him sometime ago . Here is a song I like from him, no it's not about a son killing people in showers but it does make some weird reference to gotmilk.com . I don't know why. Elvis Perkins - Without Love Buy it here .

After work last night, I stopped by Hotel Cafe to see the much buzzed about Elvis Perkins . Jerry Yeti posted some tracks by these guys about 6 months ago and it's a name that you just don't forget. Turns out, Elvis is the son of screen legend Anthony Perkins and he grew up here in LA, so last night's show was full of friends and long lost fans. I personally think he is way too talented to be playing the opening slot at Hotel Cafe, but I also wouldn't [...]
I really need to get moving if I'm going to feature a song from every artist appearing at Lollapalooza . This is the fourth installment and features a bunch of great stuff including an awesome blusey version of "New York (2x)" from Ryan Adams and a song from the Towers Of London that borrows a few Vanilla Ice lyrics. I also found out today that I don't have to work on the 5th and (thus) won't miss anything on day 2 of Lollapalooza. Nice. Oh yeah, I also contributed a song [...]

I've always been skeptical of the idea of cloning, kind of worried about what would happen if one of those weird and scary sci-fi movies came true and people could create human clones at will. But after looking through the Bluesfest schedule, I would be all to willing to get my hands on something, anything, that would let me be in two places at once. The guide is split in 2, 5 days in each. Not sure how regualr blog-posting will go throughout.. a local Bluesfest performer profile here, a [...]

DOWNLOAD: Ash Wednesday (MP3) ( more ) I'm warming up to Elvis Perkins . I still haven't listened to the album that Jerry says is one the best of the year , and I wasn't as blown away by his live show as much as others I know, but maybe I just wasn't in the mood Saturday night (July 1, 2006) for that, as MOKB puts it , "soothing, warming, yet heartwrenching brand of folk pop/rock". Notes: [...]
