Happy St. Pat's Day, and I hope you're wearing green. This is a photo of a California native plant called miner's lettuce that is growing in our yard. Yes, it's edible. Here is the schedule for the second day of my fantasy trip to SXSW 2009. I don't know how I could be more obsessive about this even if I were actually going. Most of the listed performances that are scheduled before 8:00 PM are unofficial. If you are using my fantasy day posts as a real-life guide, be sure [...]

New Wax The most effective songwriters are able to tap into a seemingly infinite well of emotion not easily accessed by the general population. It's a mystical gift that often comes packaged with a heavy burden of despair that artists of every ilk have battled and often succumb to. Sometimes loss breeds self-destruction. Sometimes it opens the floodgates of introspection and creativity. We've all heard the cliche: "What doesn't kill us only makes us stronger." Elvis Perkins seems to embody this overused, yet fitting sentiment. In case you [...]

Pretty good would be the words I'd use to describe the first Elvis Perkins album "Ash Wednesday" when it was released a couple years back. Two years later, he's back with his second record, a self-titled affair with his band Dearland. In many ways the two records are similar in effect to what Ryan Adams did, putting out records under his own name, and sometimes including his band The Cardinals as well. So the difference between Elvis Perkins and Elvis Perkins in Dearland is a proper collection of backup musicians that add instruments to the foray and give everything a [...]

Elvis Perkins has persevered through a lot of adversity in his lifetime. His father, famous actor Anthony Perkins , passed away while Elvis was still in high school and his mother perished on famous American Airlines Flight 11 during the tragic September 11th attacks. Most individuals would succumb to such tragic losses, but Elvis Perkins pressed on to create a beautiful piece of music in his debut album Ash Wednesday out in 2007. That album masterfully captured a lot of the feelings towards those events and the aftermath in our country. Fast forward to this year [...]
Elvis Perkins in Dearland is headlining a fantastic triple bill March 16 at Club Congress (next Monday), and I have a couple pairs of passes to give away, courtesy of the folks at XL Recordings. On Tuesday, March 3, Elvis Perkins In Dearland premiered their new self-titled album on Amie Street; the album only costs $8 and will help raise money for the Clearwater Foundation, Pete Seeger's charity
I've known about Bishop Allen for as long as I've been running this blog, but for some reason or another I just have never listened to any of their records. I'm sure I would enjoy their material, and maybe in some other parallel universe I'm praising them just like everyone else, but I guess I'm just waiting for someone to put one of their albums on my lap to listen to. Well, I may not be on the B.A. bandwagon, but there are some other releases this week that I can certainly get behind. [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Elvis Perkins finally has a band to back up his soft-spoken folk leanings, but that isn't too say that he's moved entirely away from his original sound; in fact, he hasn't traveled that far from where he once began his journey into the musical world. His latest release, Elvis Perkins in Dearland , is just another reminder of how capable a songsmith the man truly is. Opening the album is "Shampoo," which starts off with a mellow little progression on the [...]

Anni Rossi Rockwell Anni Rossi - "Ecology" from The Line of Best Fit ..."And although some of the sense of mischief that pervaded her earlier recordings has evaporated the uniqueness of Anni Rossi's voice may have tired the ears over time and all in Rockwell is a charming, satisfying record and one which exposes a talent that at last may be worthy of "new Regina" tags that have been thrown around in the past couple of years." Arbouretum [...]

Elvis Perkins in Dearland is hitting the road next week in support of their self-titled sophomore release , and the tour will include two stops here in Colorado: May 08 - Hi-Dive, Denver, CO May 09 - B Side Lounge, Boulder, CO Seeing these dates surface convinced me to dust off another 2006 Folks Festival recording. This performance occurred six months before the release of Ash Wednesday , so most of us festivarians were unprepared for the brilliance that lay ahead. Elvis Perkins [...]

Elvis Perkins is back with a full band and eponymous sophomore release, Elvis Perkins in Dearland . The follow-up to his his achingly sparse debut, Ash Wednesday , Dearland features a full band, fleshing out richer arrangements to Perkins' beautiful songwriting. The album gets a full release March 10, but is available today exclusively through Amie Street as part of their "Download to Make a Difference" campaign. Amie Street and XL Recordings will donate $2 for each album purchased to Clearwater , an organization founded by [...]
Elvis Perkins In Dear Land Stereogum just posted this video of one Elvis Perkins in Dearland . I haven't heard anything by this artist before so I was a little skeptical when the song "shampoo" was described as "a standout amongst standouts and one of the best folk songs you'll hear this year." But as far as singles, I think I have to agree. A great warm organ tone, harmonica, catchy drum beat, attention holding voice. This is good stuffI Just hope the album [...]

The shortest month of the year was also a month that offered what might be some of the biggest stories of the year. But between Kanye's Storytellers , Lil Wayne dominating the Grammys and U2's leak sending people into a frenzy, these are the stories that we feel best represent the month that was. Solid Gold at First Avenue : We have been pulling for these guys for a while so it was absolutely great to see them totally dominate the First Ave. mainroom. It's not often that the opener blows away both of the [...]

I adore Elvis Perkins. Ever since Oz, Woody, and I caught him play a set at SXSW in 2007 that was sandwiched between sets from Pete Townsend and the Cold War Kids (Elvis' set was the best of the night), I've been hooked. And his latest effort with his backing band Dearland is absolutely incredible. Elvis Perkins' back story is pretty well-known, but I think knowing it adds flavor to his music. In case you missed it…he lost his father, actor Anthony Perkins, to AIDS in 1992 and his mother, photographer Berry Berenson, when she was tragically killed [...]

On March 10th Elvis Perkins returns to the fold with his sophomore album, Elvis Perkins In Dearland, and this time there is little need to wax on his storied pedigree and biography. Like his debut, Ash Wednesday, Dearland sews a similar thread with the welcome addition of his eponymous band adding yet another dynamic [...]

The first time I saw Elvis Perkins in Dearland live, it was coming off of the release of Ash Wednesday , Perkins' gorgeously depressing 2006 debut (which he recorded prior to members of Dearland joining the band). After hearing the album and the back story (much of the content was written around the time of Perkins' mother's death in the 9/11 attack) I expected to be in tears by the end of the first song. The band surprised me, however, by bursting forth with one of the happiest, rocking-est sets that I witnessed all year. The disconnect was obvious [...]
