Does music make the man? Or does it maybe just influence him a little? Yesterday, the folks over at A.V. Club recommended a few albums meant to positively (whatever that means) influence kids' future music tastes, and we got to thinking about our favorite records as children and young teenagers and the impact they might have had on our current personalities - for good or ill. After the jump, we've collected a few of our (wildly subjective, tongue-in-cheek) conclusions. So read on to find out what your favorite record as a youngster says about you now, and let [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , The Hit List , Music Appreciation Everett Collection There are lots and lots of good musicians. Go to any local pub on a Friday night and there's a decent chance you'll be able to see a halfway entertaining singer. The difference between that guy at the pub and the legends known around world are many. There's the hit songs, mainly, but there's also the bizarre, ridiculous and [...]

Today, David Dye is exploring the late great American Sound Studio, where Elvis Presley recorded his final number-one hit, "Suspicious Minds," in 1969. Above, check out a photo of the studio in ... Around these parts, we like to write about Elvis Presley on the occasion of his birthday. Whereas in the past we've recommended some music and ranked his movies, this year we're going to take a darker turn. To mark the ... Continue reading ’

I couldn't let Elvis Presley's birthday pass without marking the occasion. He was born on January 8th, 1935, so that means he would have been 78 if he'd survived. Think about that - Elvis would have been a geezer. (The thought of that has apparently caused a few folks to get busy with their photo editing programs, creating pictures like this one.) Elvis Presley has certainly had more than his share of appearances here on the GMC, but I've picked four different pieces from previous years that I enjoyed putting together, and I thought they might [...]
Filed under: The Hit List GAB Archive, Redferns After a 1976 gig in Memphis, Bruce Springsteen hopped a Graceland gate at 3AM, hoping to meet his idol, Elvis Presley . Just as he was about to knock on the front door, though, a guard stopped him, and Springsteen was escorted off the property. Since that time, numerous other celebrities -- including Elvis Costello , Paul Simon , Katy Perry [...]

Today, the late and great Elvis Presley celebrates his 78th birthday. In honor of the self-proclaimed King of Rock, Consequence of Sound 's Henry Hauser takes a close look at the legend's historically unprecedented cultural influences, specifically in relation to racial integration in American life. You'll never listen to "All Shook Up" the same way again. For Elvis Presley , shakin’ things up was about much more than a scandalously pulsating pelvis. At the very core of Elvis’ societal shakeup is a collective rejection of racial segregation. In this way, his defiance is wholly [...]

Rusholme Ruffians is The Smiths at their sticky-fingered peak. From the alliteratively-alluring Ealing comedyesque title down, it's a masterclass in Morrissey's stolen kitchen sink observations backed by a Johnny Marr riff flat-out filched from Scotty Moore via Elvis Presley's (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame 1961 single. By the time they came to record Rusholme Ruffian s for second album Meat Is Murder, The Smiths were at the top of their game. As was usually the way, [...]

Presley warbles over a sweetheart whose "lips are like a volcano that's hot" in his 1957 song. "I'm proud to say she's my buttercup. I'm in love. I'm all shook up." Presley's song [...]

This past weekend longtime HT faves the Felice Brothers completed a three-night New Year's run that included two intimate sold-out shows at Maxwell's in Hoboken and a New Year's Eve gig at New York City's Mercury Lounge. The upstate New York-based band  - whose choice in covers typically leans towards the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen or traditional folk tunes - played a handful of unexpected new ones over the course of the run. To close Saturday night's show, Ian embraced his [...]
