Touring behind her well received album Conatus , Zola Jesus stopped by the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles, and filled the hall with haunting vocals amongst the bisons and dioramas. With violin-infused electronic textured tunes, former Gowns member EMA 's opening set was a nice complement. Check out the photos above and the Zola Jesus setlist below. Read More...

EMA is the solo project of Erica M. Anderson, the former lead singer for defunct noise-rock band Gowns, and her four piece band plays a loose, groaning rock music that funnels the small town anxieties of drugs and love through a singing style that sounds like Elliot Smith resurrected with the emotional concerns of a young woman. Fans of her first record, Past Life Martyred Saints , are in for a surprise: with her tall stature, bold haircut and on-tempo dance moves, Anderson's onstage confidence stands in direct opposition to her self-conscious, frighteningly honest lyrics. Due [...]
Friday fun, and we mean fun: ► First Fridays at the Natural History Museum roars into its third month of 2012, bringing Zola Jesus and EMA to the North American Hall of Mammals. ► Ohio's Cloud Nothings headline the Echo behind their new album "Attack on Memory." That's the video for "No Future / No Past," above produced by John Ryan Manning and filmed by Caleb Crossen. ► Modern Time Machines celebrate the release of their new album "Continuity Girl" with a show at [...]
As we near SXSW, we find that the quality of touring acts increases dramatically. Thursday, March 1st EMA, Reptar at Rickshaw Stop EMA does a dark and brooding brand of [...]
![[Listen] Entire EMA Live Set at Incubate Festival](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4100063_lg.jpg)
Icubate Festival, formerly called ZXZW before SXSW got pissy, is a multidisciplinary arts festival held in the Netherlands every September that plays host to a good mix of emerging Dutch and American artists. EMA performed this year and Dutch music blog Kicking The Habit recorded her entire set in superb quality. EMA puts on a solid show and I've been craving another live performance ever since my encounter with her last summer at Glasslands. This live set will do for now!
I'm a big fan of EMA. She was probably my favorite new artist last year and definitely released my favorite album. I highly recommend you all check out her music. If you haven't, you can start with her new single/video "Take One Two." It continues her insane hot streak and contributes to a good cause - the Jamie Isaacs Foundation for anti-bullying. Plus, her spring 2012 headlining tour kicks off tomorrow. You don't want to miss any of this.
One of my favorite new discoveries of 2011 is EMA . She has a 7-inch coming out for the great song "Marked," that features an equally great b-side called "Angelo." Read on to listen and order.

Given the fantastic response to last years list, here are seven female singers that I expect (hope) to make a mark on wider audiences than their current sphere of influence in 2012 and beyond. While the 2011 list had more mainstream artists on it, this year’s list reflects the evolution in my listening taste over the last year that I’ve spent blogging and features a more eclectic mix of female artists. Some (most) of them will never see the kind of success that say Adele (or even Jessie [...]

If this time through We don’t get it right, I’ll come back to you In another life. - Anteroom South Dakota native Erika M Anderson (EMA) made one of the most raw and deeply personal records of last year in the form of [...]
It's pretty much a rite of passage for any new band these days to cut their teeth on Nirvana covers, and it's a testament to the band's universal influence when musicians from all genres (and even the bands who influenced Nirvana to begin with) are more likely to play Nirvana songs than those of any other band. Today is Kurt Cobain's birthday. He would have been 45. Here on the KEXP blog, we wanted to share a diverse selection of covers of Nirvana songs and were overwhelmed by the sheer number of them. Here are just a small [...]

Better still, it's really damn fine... Some background on the single and why it's being put out for charity can be seen in a statement from EMA here... “This footage comes from a South Dakota trailer park in [...]
My two favorite music videos this week were slow, lyrical depictions of combat sports full of squalid shots of slovenly audience members and slow-motion images of gladiators at work. So, a note to music-video directors: Make more slow, lyrical depictions of combat sports. It's always awesome. Click below for this week's list. Read More...

“I’m looking for something that’ll…break through. You know?” James Woods’ Max Renn yearns in David Cronenberg’s 1983 cult classic Videodrome . Oh, how things have changed. In today’s day and age, we’ve already drowned in media. It’s swallowed us. We’re nothing but a bubble amidst one infinite, engulfing abyss. Intimidated? You should be. With each passing second, you’re losing opportunities to take advantage of a culture that’s moving ahead and at an exhausting rate. You could very well be alone…left behind…abandoned. Terrified yet? Yes? Well, that’s more like it. -Michael Roffman President/Editor-in-Chief [...]

Bonnaroo's 2012 lineup is officially one day old and that means it’s time for some post-reveal analysis. In the pages that follow, we run through the biggest highlights and surprises appearing on this year’s bill, in addition to the most glaring omissions. We also highlight five names worth knowing as you prepare for your summer vacay on The Farm. Highlights Radiohead Do we even need to digress? Erika M Anderson, who made one of our favourite records of last year, has released a brand new song and video, with all proceeds going to an anti-bullying charity. Take One Two is out now as a digital release (buy it here ) and Erika has made a video to accompany it and has also written this rather special intro for it... “This footage comes from a South Dakota trailer park in the mid-90s, and features a small group of freaks and misfits who seem to be [...]

Bonnaroo recently announced the line-up for this year's festival. Shawn Brackbill How to follow up a career-defining record is hard enough question for most bands fortunate enough to find themselves in the position of having to do so. For Austin's Shearwater , it's triply difficult as they released not one but three interlinked albums over a span of four years - the so-called "Island Trilogy" of Palo Santo , Rook and The Golden Archipelago - which transformed them from Okkervil River sidebar into one of America's [...]
The mid-90s feel like they were only a few years ago, and the EMA 's new music video for TAKE ONE TWO is made up of recylced footage of the she-singer and her friends back then, in a South Dakota trailer park. Logical, when the mp3 coulda been lifted from that decade too.
