Click image to download full album Sounds like: Feist, Billie Holliday, The Octopus Project "Zoe Boekbinder - Hollow Bones" What's so good? I have a great deal of respect for a musician who can isolate something a little ambitious and go for it; and Canadian export Zoe Boekbinder has done just that. Zoe has just released her debut album Darling Specimens , which is [...]

Lifesaver, I'm canceling our date indefinitely. It's funny how your cause now makes no sense at all. MP3: Lifesaver by Emiliana Torrini

I finally got the chance to create a room on turntable.fm , and having my friends play all their favorite tunes over the last few days has done more for my discovery of new bands than anything previously. If you haven't heard of turntable.fm, let me get you up to speed. Turntable.fm is a project of Seth Goldstein and Billy Chasen, the two guys who brought us Stickybits (stickybits is a free app that allows you to unlock every single barcode with a quick scan to find info, deals and cool stuff). The website was started [...]

Jai Paul is a mystery to me. The guy came out with a pretty sick demo in '07 which went rampant within the blog sphere almost 3 years later. "BTSTU" was written up by almost every major blog last year yet Paul failed to ever deliver a full album. XL Recordings (home to M.I.A., Tyler the Creator, The XX, Radiohead, etc) picked up the single back in April and released it both digitally and on vinyl. The track is kinda epic, an iTunes library jem. It's classified as grime/ dubstep only because of it's sawtoothed bass line [...]

The Steam Co. gals love a good roadtrip, and luckily so do many of our By Request readers. This mix comes to you courtesy of Steam Co. friend Mackenzie, who is heading from the middle/west to the west coast with her pop next weekend. Enjoy the drive! "Beach Boys - Good Vibrations" "Dirty Gold - California Sunrise" "Local Natives - Sun Hands" "Bright Eyes - Another Travelin' Song" "Joni Mitchell - California" [...]
Superflu from elr°y on Vimeo . I've been listening to a lot of Emiliana Torrini when I'm feeling in need of some good acoustic music these past couple of months. She is an incredible singer/songwriter from Island with a very mellow tone to her music and very cute vocals that really remind me of Feist's 2004 album Let it Die. Her music was featured in this super slow motion jewelry design video displaying Dorlis Meier's Superflu pieces. If you're not in the right mood the video will be nothing more than a [...]

While Icelandic singer-songwriter, Emiliana Torrini, has been on the down low for awhile, she is back on the scene for 2011. Having just released a single for the new film 'Sucker Punch', I guarantee her albums will be more sought out. 'White Rabbit' is originally performed by psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane, but sounds even better with the vocals of Torrini. Her sound is completely unique, and combined with the retro sound of 'White Rabbit - It's fantastic. So check it out, and I really suggest downloading the whole 'Sucker Punch' soundtrack; it's AHmazing. But you can check out Emiliana Torrini [...]
Was revisiting Emiliana Torrini's Me and Armini again this morning and thinking about how production on a song is similar to direction in a film. Some directors/producers are hammy hot doggers and others are elegant and simple. Whoever produced Armini showed restraint towards the start and then went for it and piled on beeps and whistles at the end. Anyhoo. Here's more from the silken voice Em, via Cover Lay Down . [...]

Emilíana Torrini - "Jungle Drum" Hey guys, it's February 14th. That day where we celebrated some martyrs conveniently named Valentine. Wait, no? That's not it? Emilíana Torrini's Jungle Drum is the perfect Valentine's Day song. It's romantic, sure. But it's also fast-paced, with a pick-me-up attitude and an infectious beat. The lyrics are almost breathless and Torrini's descriptions are passionate and half-nonsense (which is a pretty good way of describing love, if you ask me). This song is off of her fifth [...]

When I was in high school I used to watch a lot of movies on TV with my mum. Most of the times on HBO. Didn't really matter what it was, we would sit and watch the first few minutes to see if it gets to us. One evening we were watching Crazy/Beautiful and suddenly a song hit me hard. From the very first notes. I scribbled a few lyrics to search them on the internet. I found out it was Emiliana Torrini 's To Be Free . I couldn't find her music anywhere at [...]

It's been a long, busy weekend, and it'll be a long night, too, with end-of-term grading due in the morning and a thick stack of final exams to go through first. I've got a great Covered in Kidfolk post half-drafted, complete with a contest give-away for Putumayo Kids' new acoustic lullaby CD, but it will have to wait; for now, here's a taste of Valentine's past, originally posted in 2008, to remind you to start making plans for next Monday. I spent all [...]
