DOWNLOAD: Emilie Simon - Flowers (Live) (MP3) "Adorable." [ Sasha Frere Jones ] Emilie Simon is a big star in France. She played Joe's Pub in NYC back on November 13, 2006. I went, but forgot to post about it until now - so, finally, here are the pictures. El Perro Del Mar was the opener (I did post those already ). [...]
Emilie Simon - Dame de Lotus Emilie Simon - Dame de Lotus (live)

This week L'Olympia was released, the first live-cd (there's a dvd too, but as far as I know there's no combi) by Emilie Simon . Recorded, obviously, at Paris Olympia. It features tracks from all her albums, including the March of the Penguins -soundtrack. I can understand why you want to see Emilie live, but why you want to own a live-album by her is puzzling me. The music's nice, lots of strings, but almost no songs have different arrangements. Her voice is as sweet and angelic as you would excepts, which ofcourse is [...]

For my first blog I wanted to share a little of what I've been doing with music lately, both independently and through Milan Records (see link down below). I'm lucky enough to have found such a forward thinking record label to work (actually, play) in. Milan recently acquired 2 DVDs that for any self proclaimed music connoisseur, are a must see. If there's one thing that I know about pop music in America, it's that the more well crafted something is, the less likely it is to become successful. After all, albums sell better when they are aimed at the short attention spans of 13 year old girls. This doesn't seem t stop other countries from producing some brilliant pop music. Émilie Simon of France is solid proof that pop is, for the most part, better elsewhere. Her self-titled debut from 2003 is STILL on the French charts even after she's put out two other albums. [...]

We are approaching the end of the Month of Male here on Filles Sourires. SOM has a nice take on the theme: "You make me feel like a natural woman". All the following male singers could have interpreted this Aretha Franklin classic... They are all men and assume to sing a song created by/for female singers. From a funny Diane Tell cover by Jérémie Kisling to the Claire Diterzi 's sexual healings by Franck Monnet . Here are cocky songs!! In this short selection, there's so much irony. [...]

2006 is coming to an end - and what a year it was. Not only did I become a father, I got the chance to spend a half hour in the presence of Charlotte Gainsbourg, and stare for 40 minutes in the steelblue eyes of Carla Bruni. Plus I dj'ed at a fantastic Gainsbourg-tribute in Amsterdam, and my ears got treated to a lot of lovely voices and chansons. Here's a roundup of the 15 best Filles Sourires-songs of 2006. 1. Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5.55 Brilliant album (also called 5.55 ), great lyrics. Yes, [...]

One of the most satisfying parts of our region of the blogging universe is the sense of community that exists. While we're all shaped by our disparate tastes and inclinations, we're all united, to some degree, by our appreciation for music. A great example of this occurred last week, when I was introduced to Emilie Simon over at Music Is Art . As mentioned within, Emilie's been featured on Thievery Corporation 's Versions (definitely check out that great remix of "Desert"), and also composed the soundtrack to [...]

"It's great when you have the feeling you are doing something important or that you're understood. But it doesn't alter the way I work in any way. I'm always thinking back on what I have done, because I don't want to be redundant. I want to make music without rules, without anybody telling me what I have to do." from montpelier, france, emilie simon is an award-winning composer of the soundtrack la marche de l'empereur (march of the penguins). referred to as the french [...]

So, not every song in Projet Piano is strictly 88-keys-only. Sue me. In my opinion, this version of Désert by Emilie Simon belongs in this project, because of the beautiful melody (no doubt played by Emilie herself) that suddenly comes up after 2,30 minutes. Before that, it's bass and guitar only. Emilie recorded Désert a couple of times, and it was remixed by Avril. The tracklisting of Flower Book (see cover on the left), released on November 7, features the 'UK version'. No idea which one that is (in English, I [...]

David Bowie Rant Warning: Just letting you know. Proceed. Now, honestly: how many people is David Bowie going to collaborate with, or perform live with, or just randomly appear at their shows? I mean, there was that Arcade Fire, Brian Eno, now who will be next? It seems like if David Bowie goes to see you live just once you become the next "indie progidy". Now, I love you David Bowie. But at least wear a scarf or some shades next time. Or [...]
Lyrics Of The Week This trio from Los Angeles was supposed to be featured in my New Act Week post, but somehow I just completely forgot to put them in my list. But I just can't let it go, this song's so great I have to post it here. Despite being such a short song (about 2 minutes), it's a very charming, subtle, delicate song. The lead singer's sweet and soft voice just transfer the lyrics about long distance relationship smoothly. The best moment to listen to this song's probably [...]

Emilie...
