Every Wednesday we will be featuring a Sweet Five! What's a Sweet Five you may ask? Well I'll drop you five sweet songs that you should listen to once a week, that will help you get over your hump-day and set sail towards the ever-nearing weekend! Ready? Okay! Grieves - Light Speed One of my favourite rappers currently. Grieves is a poet with down to earth stories told over a great beat with catchy flow. "It's like I'm moving at lightspeed. Slow [...]
There is a website out there called The Playlist Presents... It is very good. Okay, I should probably be a little bit more descriptive. It is a music and film website that does a very good job of making playlists in the style of certain artists. Here is a little roundup of some of my favourite songs they've put up and what playlist they're off. They have been part of the big indieWIRE for about a year now, which they're rather pleased about (rightly so!). Some of the playlists are rather old, but they've stood the test of time rather [...]

So this is the first part of the Halloween mixtapes i promised. This is just a short "creepy" one. It clocks in at about 40 odd minutes. While walking home late at night earlier this week i came up with the concept of making an atmospheric and "intimidating" mixtape that could be used at the beginning of a party, maybe just as the guests are arriving or whatever. My original idea was to make it a bit longer but i was pressed for time so just quickly recorded this one. The songs i used are ones that i [...]
These are great records made by hunky, young things. We love them in spite of their inherent boy-band-ism. This is an instance where our tastes align with 13 year-old girls'.
The best time for contemplation is on late winter nights, a friend said to me. Sometimes he holes up in his bedroom and while the world sleeps, he thinks. The cold harnesses the mind and hones the senses. We see divisions more clearly: the geometry of a bedside table, the sharp difference of darkness and light, the separation of communal identity and the lone self. In winter, the watercolor smear of summer is gone and the world has suddenly come into focus. Winter keeps us indoors for long spans, which is hell for restless people. But [...]
Review: 4 stars (out of 5) Summary: Richly textured melodies juxtaposed with Veirs' mild-manner vocals and unassuming song-craft make this album a must-listen of 2010. Sounds like: Emily Haines, Sufjan Stevens, Graham Coxon - Laura Veirs' new album, July Flame, is a strange monster. It is, if anything, completely unassuming. Upon first glance, one is inclined to see it [...]
The video for Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton's single "Dr. Blind" is fittingly eerie. Haines walks through a brightly lit, cold department store heading to the pharmacy before the lights go out and Haines finds herself seemingly alone in the now mysteriously emptied store. A beautiful tune and a great video to go with it. Enjoy! Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton - Dr. Blind

A favorite contralto of ours, Emily Haines , surfaced yesterday during a music transfer and brought a smile to my face. For those of you unfamiliar, Haines is a member of the bands Metric , Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton and Broken Social Scene . All mixed in with a solo career too where she's released two albums, Knives Don't Have Your Back , and What Is Free to a Good Home? . Her solo work is typically more mellow and piano-based than her [...]

I can honestly say I'm a fan of pretty much everything Emily Haines has done so far, musically. There is Metric of course, and there is her solo stuff, but there's also - let's not forget - her many wonderful collaborations. Some, like " Anthems for a 17-year Old Girl ", seem to be universally loved while others, like " Stopwatch Hearts " or " Uptown Girl ", are less well known. From her songs with Stars and The Stills, to her involvement in Crystal Method and even Tiesto projects - it seems that this is one musician who cannot [...]
A few days shy of when I originally promised, here is one of the mixtape drafts I did for the Ultimate Mixtape requested of me by Creative Loafing for the Annual Music Issue. Some new, some old. Lots of spacey, noisy, heavy and British. These are some of the bands ...

Oof. My head hurtz. I was trying to find a funny old tyme-y ad to illustrate my headache but stumbled across this fucked up thing.

A Generation of Canadian Media Culture by Melanie Strong Up here, where the secretive and unassuming Canadians live and breed, generations have been raised on Saturday morning cartoons and after dinner sitcoms. In that, myself and my fellow Canucks are no different than any other Westernized country. In fact, much of our collective cultural consciousness has been permanently altered by the broadcasted American stations to which wee all tune in. Our childhoods and our childrens' hoods are [...]

It finally happened; I walked outside today and absolutely needed a jacket. In a somewhat celebratory manner I placed a blue hoodie firmly around my shoulders, taking in the crisp autumn air. Some of you have probably been requiring jackets for several weeks, and some of you probably aren't happy about that either. I, however, make no apologies for my love and preference for cold weather, autumn, winter, snow, and other things of the nature, so today was a good day for me. Knowing I needed to celebrate this joyous occasion properly, I made a quick [...]

Saturday Night/Yesterday morning I did something kind of stupid; I drove from Chicago to Nashville on six hours of sleep, after spending the day walking around Chicago for 8 hours. Already physically exhausted and beginning my journey with the sun already having been set for 2 hours, I arrived home at 4:00 am, narrowly hanging on to my last few minutes of energy and my last few ounces of gas and of course immediately passed out for a good while. I found that the music that kept me awake when my best friend and girlfriend heartlessly [...]
I discovered this a while ago but thought I would post it now because i've just recently been reminded of how good Emily Haines is, in whatever form she comes- (Broken Social Scene, Metric, Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton.... ) The song 'Our Hell' off of 'Knives Don't Have Your Back', directed by Jaron Albertin. Also check out the highly excellent 'Reading in Bed' Remixed by 65 Days of Static, and Telethon here And from Metric, Monster Hospital. Gets you from the very first bam-shick-a-lang-shick-a-boom- boom-boom ... also [...]

Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton Crowd Surf Off A Cliff

Although it may be considered slightly slow on the uptake to dish my opinions on an EP that was released in July of 2007, the latest solo release from Canadian indie music's hardest working woman was a big part of why we started this blog in the first place. So, all judgement towards my irresponsibility as a proper blogger aside, on with the Revue. "What Is Free To A Good Home?" is a collection of previously unreleased tracks recorded during the sessions for Haines' 2006 LP [...]

There is no denying that the Broken Social Scene has given us several solo albums from band mates such as Feist, Kevin Drew, Emily Haines, Stars, and Jason Collett. Now that they have announced that the band will be performing at this year's Bonnaroo, it has me very curious if these artist will be returning for this special showing? Currently, the band continues on with special performance appearances from some of the solo artists, but that comes very few and far between. Not only that, but one of my friends recently wrote me an email asking my opinions about [...]
