Elliott Smith wrote some of the prettiest pop songs ever written. Of course, writing a pretty pop song isn't the same thing as writing an upbeat pop song. "Between the Bars" is a perfect example. The melody is touchingly beautiful and unthreateningly gentle. The lyrics, however, are undeniably troubled. Although the song could double as an unorthodox love song (a popular interpretation of the track), the most likely read is that it's about the threat of impending alcoholism. As the track opens, Smith sings ruefully about "the potential you'll be, but you'll never see / the promises you'll only make." [...]

Alright there, how's it going? Only four more days left of this little feature before we have to move on and write some proper bits. Before that happen, have a little snippet and a song to help you steel yourself for the end of the holidays. This is a song from Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, a film I watched for maybe the thirtieth time over Christmas. Not only is the film boss, but the music is great. It was written by one of my stable favourites, Metric. I love their mix of quite dark production and Emily Haines' very [...]

Yes... they said "Blood Pressures" as in multiple pressures for one blood. Every time I say it I feel like I should use my redneck accent and say, "Gettin' my blood pressures took at the wal-marts." But I suppose the album is good enough for me to overlook the ridiculousness of it's title. For a [...]
