It's easy to imagine Emily Lacy living inside of a giant old tree, and fairies come to her for wisdom about saving the world. For the past few months, Lacy has been rallying for the revolution with her Occupy shows in town, and she's teamed up with producer Scott Barber to put it on virtual wax. Opening song "Beat" reveals she's riled up with some psychedelic details and plenty reverb. The big tree she lives in, it has great natural reverb chambers. Flowers bloom out of its cracks when the sound escapes. "Country" is a catchy battle [...]
JEFFREY LEWIS AND THE JUNKYARD, EMILY LACY, AND CHEESE ON BREAD ON WEDNESDAY DEC. 7TH AT THE ECHO COUNTRY OUTPOST, 1770 GLENDALE BOULEVARD, LOS ANGELES. 7:30PM/ $10/ ALL AGES

An album that has snuck up on me is "Country Singer" from outspoken artist/musician/performer Emily Lacy. I mean it is from 2010 and it might not be everybody's cup of tea, but there is something that draws me to it. It is dark, gothic, beautiful and oddly easy to listen to if you give it a chance to open up and breathe. I keep thinking that she reminds me of a female folky version of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy...on this album. This comparison might not hold up for some, but the way that the music has a bit more [...]

Tom Brosseau and John C. Reilly photo by Kate Rentz The New L.A. Folk Festival put together a cozy Louvin Brothers tribute show at HM157 featuring covers of Louvin classics by an array of L.A. folk-inspired bands. Fort King started the night off a little rocky by cutting a song in the middle when singer Ryan Fuller could not hear his guitar, but the crowd would have preferred he just play through to keep the vibe magical and not stall. When you're only playing two songs, it seems like you gotta be a trooper and keep [...]

Springtime is here! Well, it's not technically here, of course... but birds are chirping and kids are playing outside of my open window. This weekend, we'll have the pleasure of "springing forward" and gaining a glorious hour of sunshine in exchange for losing an hour of sleep. Also, my allergies are bad right now and I'm home sick in bed. So - technically or not - springtime is here! To celebrate the spring, I made a mixtape for you. It's less than 30 minutes long, so you can fit all of the songs on a single side of [...]

Photography by AMMO Producer Nicole Disson takes theater out of the 'theater' and drops it out of the sky into places like the rooftop of the Standard Downtown, where confused and bemused businesspeople wonder at the dancers in the pool and the actors in the fire pits. Her March performance of her one-night-only The Series put L.A. RECORD alumni like Julia Holter and Emily Lacy in strange new performing environments—even for them! This interview by Drew Denny. You've got a thing for rock operas, eh? [...]

Nestled deep within California's Morongo Basin, the tiny desert outpost of Pioneertown welcomed THE NEW L.A. FOLK FEST to legendary roadhouse Pappy and Harriet's. I'm not sure I can articulate the ambiance, but the warm, radiant glow of Pappy and Harriet's was an idyllic haven for folk fans brave enough to mix it up with a junior snow flurry. The festival was an intimate gathering intended to promote and document new folk music in Los Angeles as it happens. The lineup consisted of Amanda Jo Williams , Tommy Santee Klaws , Turn On The Sunlight [...]

Dan Kern Emily Lacy "Dawn" (From her self-released LP Country Singer) I'm wrapped up in the idea of Emily Lacy and her comforting voice, and the strange, beautiful ways she pronounces words. "Take" turns me into little particles, the ghost of reverb following behind her elongated vowels and pinched syllables. I whistle along with the simple guitar melody and occasionally grasp an image or feeling as it passes. Emily Lacy is a beacon of light and joy, but her album is full of [...]
www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS1cIX hXnmc If we get another ice age, ya better hope Emily Lacy's igloo is in your village so you can stay warm through these post-apocalyptic times. Emily Lacy recently embarked on a cross country tour to the cold part of the country, which included an igloo performance in Minnesota, repping Machine Project. Watch this, I hope you cry a little. The song is "Man On The Mountain," from her album Country Singer , which we reviewed in the new issue of L.A. RECORD. So we couldn't follow her to the igloo, but [...]
