Neil Young's On The Beach was originally released in 1974 as the follow up to the commercially and critically successful Harvest . It was raw and loose, and from the lyrics and sparse production, it's clear that Young was in an emotionally dark place at the time. For a modern equivalent, you could compare it's emotional bleakness to Kanye West's 808 & Heartbreaks , except that where 808s was overproduced with autotune, On The Beach was underproduced (also: On The Beach is just a better record). We find Young here [...]

Dillon James Rego a/k/a ALASKAS sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series. q: What is the last song you (really) heard? a: I've really fallen for this song Fireball (youtube) by Don Spencer . It's a pretty song about love and dreams of being a spaceman. I caught it on this teenpopdoowop rarities collection I picked up. A little research tells me that it was the theme song to this show Fireball XL5 [...]

Universal Electricity pays homage to Young with a compilation of indie artists covering his songs. Some of these covers are pretty out there and others are, well let's just say my taste. The one that sticks out to me is the cover teen Daze did called "Harvest Moon" As soonI heard the first few seconds it caught my attention, the modern electronic lounge beat they use is addicting. Teen Daze-Harvest Moon (Neil Young cover) Headed for the Ditch Tracklist: [...]

Previewed here is a new dialed back version of a track Blackbird Blackbird first dropped in November called "Modern Disbelief". All the cool shit that made the earlier version great are still there while much of the more goofy affectations (that robot sounding synth melody) have been 862d. Overall, the track does play much smoother. And with the addition of Orlando artist Emily Reo's faraway harmonies and melodic lines, the tune takes on an almost choral sort of quality. Sweet! Blackbird Blackbird - Modern Disbelief (Feat. Emily Reo) [...]

Many thing have happened since CMJ, both in my life and the rest of the world, but I guess in the age of the internet the blogs don't wait. That's not going to stop me from sharing some of my CMJ highlights with you. these photos were shot on a diana mini, and there is something special about that...because i've switched to shooting almost exclusively with LC-A+...so these might be the last small square photos for a while. This was the first time I actually did CMJ, and it was a blast...good friends and good times. hanging out [...]

Hailing from California, Craft Spells create addictive and upbeat pop tracks, perfectly engineered for warm, relaxing summer days. New single After The Moment is no exception, being inexplicably simple but effective, allowing the vocals to lull the listener into a hypnotic trance. At heart it's a love song, yet it provides much more, danceable and energetic, it's blissful melody is a joy to behold. B-Side Love Well Spent continues in a similar vein, repetitive synths and combined female (courtesy of Emily Reo) and male vocals add an extra dimension to the track. [...]

Craft Spells — Love Well Spent (Feat. Emily Reo) This breezy, New Order-indebted cut is the b-side to Craft Spells ' After the Moment 7" (out now on Captured Tracks ). Their debut LP, Idle Labor , is set to drop March 1. [ mp3 ]

Craft Spells have been on constant rotation this week. I didn't know much about the band till I looked up them up and found out they're Stockton, CA, a city that between San Francisco and Sacramento for those who don't know. They're sign to Brooklyn's Capture Tracks and just released a single called 'A Moment With You'. In the middle of last year they also released a collaborative sound with Emily Reo, whom featured before on LMN. Craft Spells debut album 'Idle Labor' is due out this and hopefully they'll play a set [...]
