Guest post by Emily White of Whitesmith Entertainment and Readymade Records . White, Young Hines and Brendon Benson share their story today as part of The Hypebot Sessions at NARM's Music Biz 2012 . When I started working with Brendan Benson a few years ago, he sent me a list of artists he was into, all of which were very familiar to me from Elvis Costello to Liz Phair to Bon Iver. However, there was one name on the list that [...]
Guest post by Emily White of Whitesmith Entertainment and Readymade Records . Managers in the Entertainment industry take a lot of flack and have various stereotypes associated with their image and motives. In fact, music industry professionals in general are often pegged as sleazy, heartless businesspeople leeching off of creative minds to (gasp!) make money. With the decline of the modern music industry over the past decade, job pools have [...]
This post is by Emily White of Whitesmith Entertainment . Today I will be departing for my 7 th trip in eight years to the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. My first was in 2004 with The Dresden Dolls on their first "national tour" hitting BBQ's and sports bars, but let's be serious. The real focal point of the trip was getting to SXSW. It's interesting to me that whenever I mention this event to non-industry friends [...]

Friends of the blog, She's the Queen, released a new song last week. I was unfortunately driving across country so I was only able to listen to about half of it at that time before the internet decided to conk out and stop buffering. I finally got to listening to it on my speakers and it's another awesome song from She's the Queen that deserves to be highlighted. I originally posted about She's the Queen in early December. At that point, Emily White and Andrew Kuryloski made up She's the Queen. I believe the pair have [...]

Honestly, Matt & Kim's Sidewalks was my most played album in November and it wasn't all that close. I guess it proves I'm a sucker for happy-sounding electro-pop. And my voracious appetite for electro-pop can't even be filled by a great band like Matt & Kim so I'm always on the lookout for more. If that's your sound, there's a pretty good chance that I'm going to like you. Still, I wasn't sure if I could find something to love like Matt & Kim. Fortunately, I came across She's the Queen by way of Arjan Writes [...]
Feeling like a little mellow, acoustic tunage before the assault of NX35 and SXSW? Opening Bell Coffee offers up a nice bill of singer/songwriters this evening with Kevin So and Emily White.Hail... Continue reading "Gig Alert: Kevin So and Emily White at Opening Bell Coffee" >

Emily White Wild Tigers I Have Known

Once again, it's time to clean out my backlog of songs that I liked but don't really have time to do a full post about. These songs have absolutely nothing to do with summertime, so those looking for "the" soundtrack for summer 2008 need look elsewhere. Those looking to curb their appetite for a hip-hopping, honky tonking good time, please see below. For everyone else, enjoy! Oh yeah, alot of these songs came from payplay.fm whose "fresh tracks" rss feed has apparently went the way of the dodo. So now I'm having to listen to other music blogs [...]

The big news around these parts is we will be leaving these parts. For Thanksgiving , The Duchess, Duke Jr. and I are flying back to the Midwest. To stay at my parents house on the Mississippi River . To get me (and you all) in the mood for my time at the river, here are 30 " river " songs, and 3 " Mississippi " songs (1 overlap) and one named after the woman who is named after my hometown. Some you've heard here before, some you haven't. [...]

Armed with little more than an acoustic guitar and her fragile alto, San Francisco folk singer/songwriter Emily Jane White offers complex tales of melancholy and isolation. While comparisons to contemporaries like Cat Power and Hope Sandoval are frequent, Emily's music owes a clear debt to classic female jazz and blues singers such a Billie Holiday. Emily's haunted blues quickly found a home on Oakland's Double Negative Records with them only hearing her 4-track demo. Fooling around with music since pre-school, Emily started on piano around the same time she learned to read, eventually picking up the [...]
