Emma-Lee Genre: Jazzy Indie-Pop Toronto, Ontario Sample Track: Never Just a Dream Emma-Lee is a singer-songwriter out of Toronto who released her album Never Just a Dream on Bumstead Productions in March earlier this year. The foundation of her album Never Just A Dream is built on a collection of songs inspired by the sort [...]

Photography by Us My friends, you are in for a special treat as we conclude our unofficial Mixtape week.... a very rare bird indeed, the elusive TsuruBride Mixtape!!! I know what you are thinking though, "Volume II? Tsuru, what happened to Volume I?" Well.... Let me explain. A little while back, late last year, my baby made me a mixtape of songs that reminded her of me called, obviously, Tsongs For Tsuru (clever, eh?). It was very special (it actually made me teary-eyed [...]

This tip comes courtesy of my radio-collegue turned rocker, Ms. Amy Miller of The Panic Years . Maybe a rejuvenation of the 60's bar era when you'd have those sexy women singing in lounges whilst draping themselves over the ash covered grand piano. Maybe the kind of down-tempo singer you'd get if you added mixtures of Joni Mitchell, Eva Cassidy, Sam Phillips and Leonna Naess. Emma-Lee comes to us from Toronto and with the angst-filled heartache, she also radiates a stripped soul. Though I've provided the title-track to Emma-Lee's [...]
Welp, Canadian Music Week is coming up, so reviewing Emma-Lee 's debut album is perfect timing to encourage people to check her out and consider seeing her live. Emma-Lee hails from our very own Toronto, and is an incredibly self-sufficient artist by self-producing, self-managing, self-promoting, and even self-photo-taking (although she is now co-managing with Bumstead). She has presented us with Never Just a Dream , an amalgamation of jazz, pop, folk, and ballads, re-released last week after joining the label. At a glance, she is said to be comparable to the likes of Norah [...]

Lots of great stuff this week, as the new album Middle Cyclone from Neko Case certainly comes out on top with having both excellent songs and equally good cover art. Honestly, she could release an album of her just reading from a phone book and I would probably buy it. I'm sure we can all agree on this one. A couple of other albums that I would personally recommend have been released digitally on iTunes: The Boy Least Likely To's The Law Of The Playground and Fanfarlo's [...]

It was over 50 degrees in New York today! Also kind of scary since I swore I saw some snow flurries yesterday. (Damn you global warming.) Anyway, I digress. Emma Lee's voice has an old school quality to it, that I am ever so fond of these days. Close your eyes, and envision a smoky jazz bar, a whiskey, and a lone spotlight. Yeah, you know you're there. Check out her myspace for more songs. I also highly recommend "Isn't it Obvious." So great! Emma Lee- Never Just A [...]

sometimes i just wanna be coddled, either via a serious head rub or taking in the tones that only a lovely lass can provide. usually, and/or sadly, i have to rely on the latter, but that's a matter that i must take up with my lady. usually i hit up the usual suspects, chan, neko, lucinda, mary lou, etc to wrap me close to their bosoms and take my pain way, but i may have found another to add to my collection of ladies. canadian emma lee has the pipes that hearkens me back to simpler days. days when my [...]

As much as I like her, I also predict that Emma-Lee risks the same fate as Norah Jones and Katie Melua by being branded as just another dull, modern blues/jazz singer fabricated for a mainstream audience that like to think of themselves as alternative. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with the mainstream (I'm a Britney and Kylie fan, for goodness sake) but it's rather sad to see how this genre has been "tainted" by the success of Norah Jones - at first music critics raved about her, but once she became a house hold name [...]

Photography "Self-Portrait" by Emma-Lee (I think) I'm such a sucker for a sexy, strong, smart, & talented Canadian lady... Leslie Feist , Amy Milan , Emily Haines , the list goes on, and hell, I even married one ! It's my kryptonite or something. "Sexy, smart, strong, & talented, what's not to like?" you say??? Yeah, sure, that's great, but take that woman and toss her up to the great frozen tundra and well, I'm smitten (throw in an occupational-related necklace on her and [...]

Toronto based music publishing company Bearsuit Publishing has been working hard to provide an affordable high quality music catalogue for television, film and commercial use. In order to commemorate the one year anniversary, The Drake Underground hosted an evening of awesome music on Wednesday night. The lineup was as eclectic as it was enjoyable and I'm glad to have been there to be introduced to some solid acts, as well as returning to see one of my favourites. As I often do, I'll start at night's end and work backwards. [...]

If you're in Toronto, with the film fest happening, the city will be full of things to do and see. For this Wednesday, sept 10th, here's two options I recommend. The Walkmen at The Horseshoe Tavern. Here's them performing in Juan's basement ( care of P4k ). or head to the Drake for a little celebration I'm putting on. More details here .
