Finally, I've got round to compiling my albums of 2009. I've got a top 20. Not a top 10 because there's always more than ten records I'd like to mention. Not a top 30 or 50 because there seems little point in grading anything any further. Basically, ten albums I ...

This is a little collection of music which are just some of my favourite Christmas tracks, ranging from classic rock, indie numbers, crooners, jazz tracks and folk duets. This mix has been made to enjoy for an hour or so, but hopefully this will show some of you guys that there can be good Christmas music. Please buy any of the albums that the songs are from (except for the God awful RTL Christmas Fever), they are some of the best of the best. I've added some links to buy a couple of these Christmas album classics. [...]

43. The xx 'xx' (Young Turks) - Spellbindingly pivotal to life's progression. 42. Calvin Harris 'Ready For The Weekend' (Sony) - Yeah, alright. Just stop shoving your face in the videos. 41. Miike Snow 'Miike Snow' (Downtown) - A sweet 'n' nice supplement to a dark day. [...]

Photography by Me! With the pilgrimage complete and honourable mentions dutifully listed and out of the way , it is time to start the list proper-style. Today, No. 35 to No. 17, aka, The Opening Acts! I'm so excited! Are you? What? Why 35? Why 17? Fair enough, question and we've probably got a lot of newcomers around, so let me quickly explain. Tomorrow's mixtape fit the top 16 albums, so starting at No. 17 [...]
Considering its the year I decided to pen 'Thoughts for Tonight'; the self-indulging, British, rant about what's good on this side of 'the pond', it was an incredibly disheartening task coming up with an end of year list. Yet, after much careful deliberation, many re-listens and such extensive hair-pulling, that it looks like I've had [...] Related posts: Thoughts for Tonight: Geddes About five years, in a rather misguided part of... While it's fairly common for artists to perform a cover every once in a while, it's much rarer (and more interesting) for a band to incorporate a cover into one of their own songs. Much of the time, the "song within a song" is done to add weight or resonance to the track, reinforce it's meaning, or pay tribute to the original artist. Or they could just be doing it for the hell of it, but if artists can pull it off well, it can make an already good song even better. Here are some of some songs within songs [...]

If Emmy The Great's fall of '08 gem "We Almost Had A Baby" had been delivered by some R&B diva-to-be, the '50's-flavored ball of melodic sugar in which she narrates a twisted revenge fantasy of getting pregnant by some heart-crushing ex simply so she "could have something above (him)" would have been answered back via numerous rapper-laced remixes by now, with many emcees excitedly competing to see who could drop the cruelest rhymes about how she's nothing but a loony groupie chick. Alas it wasn't, so the only response Emmy's awarded arrives from this year-later [...]

Time for another playlist and for my favorite show on TV. The Office is going on strong and really worked their storylines well without getting too ridiculous. I've become a huge Michael Scott fan as the seasons grow on, he isn't the total douche and not necessarily a complete idiot. I've had a few complaints from friends who don't like the show as much as previous seasons. The truth of the matter is that I think I enjoy the show more when I can watch it uninterrupted (on DVD) and over again. The Office [...]

Indie folk music's favourite lyrically outrageous beauty is back with four brand new and brilliant tracks for your undoubtedly grateful consumption. Since seeing Emmy for the first time at Norwich Arts Centre earlier this year on the very same day her debut album 'First Love' was released, I just haven't been able to get enough of her haunting folk-inspired melodies. 'Edward' only strengthens these feelings. From the soulful and delicate opening of 'Edward Is Deadward', this is an EP that is both instantly captivating and extremely inspiring to its listener; 'Two Steps Forward' and 'A Bowl [...]

Frank Yang So here we are on the first day of Virgin Festival 2009 and what's everyone talking about? The headliners of Virgin Festival 2008 - Oasis - and the fact that Noel Gallagher has quit . Illness was blamed when the band cancelled their headlining slot at the UK's V Fest last Sunday, but this time the official word is there was "an altercation" between Noel and brother Liam and that Noel walked out on the band on the eve of a show in Paris, with [...]

Owen Richards I don't always trust myself, particularly when it comes to things like first impressions to music. Some things I think I hate grow to become dear favourites, while other things that may impress at first blush turn out to have the shortest shelf lives. But sometimes the things that instantly sound amazing actually are, and while it may still be too soon to call it, I'm prepared to put The xx in that rarefied group. I only got a copy of their debut album xx earlier this week, [...]

The crowd you run into Saturday night at the 9:30 Club can be hit or miss. Sometimes you're surrounded by the beautiful people who buy last-minute tickets to a not sold-out yet show at the nondescript building at 815 V Street, deciding the gig might be a good way to kill some time on a slow Saturday night. (I imagine this sort of thing happens every single night at clubs all around New York City, but not in D.C. because we don't have oodles upon oodles of great venues in our town.) And sometimes you're surrounded by people [...]

Kevin Westenberg This has already been covered ad nauseum everywhere - I saw it mentioned in some washroom graffiti yesterday - but I think my music blogging license gets revoked or something if I don't report on it and anyways, it's quick and easy and allows me to spend the evening watching television. Everyone was abuzz last week when a song that sounded too much like Radiohead to not be Radiohead began circulating online without any official comment from the band's camp. Naturally, everyone went batshit - they'd already released a new tune [...]
You will have to forgive me if I don't sound like myself for the next few days, for I was taken along to see 'The Antichrist' last night and still feel violated. There was people walking out, I basically didn't watch the last forty minutes, instead choosing to focus all my attention on rolling cigarettes in preparation for those beautiful credits to come along. FUCKING RANCID are the only two words that can come close to what I witnessed. On a lighter note, I only just got round to listening to Emmy The Great's [...]
