Emperor X , the noise/folk project of C. R. Matheny, has a wonderfully delightful new album out called "Western Teleport" that I've have not stopped listening to since I got it. Emperor X mainly uses an acoustic guitar and a dynamic microphone, but also uses a lot of percussive and electronic instruments. The diversity of the subject matter of the songs goes all over the place from plate tectonics to fixing broken air conditioners. But the coolest part is that he decided to make a scavenger hunt with his fans by making plastic containers or "nodes" [...]

This is one of those quirky songs that are so weird, off-beat and loveable you might want to hate it, just because it's so easy to be loved in that quirky-indie-song way. I initially thought I might write it off, until I got to the brazenly earnest chorus, which is where everything comes snapping into focus in this song so well that it's really preposterous to ignore. Relatable, catchy and sad all at once, Emperor X made himself a staple in about 15 seconds. Emperor X is the solo project of a guy named [...]

It's not my typical mixery, but it'll do. No random songs this time - they're actually of my choosing! I know, crazy concept. Let's get to the point. I was recently asked, along with a few esteemed music blogs and KR friends, to curate a little playlist for exfm at Cantora Lab's Smartlounge at CMJ. So, below you'll find five songs from a few of my favorite artists performing at CMJ this year. There are several other acts I love and want to see - this is by no means a comprehensive [...]

Emperor X - Erica Western Teleport He wakes up, every morning, with the sun in his eyes, the faint flush of a dawning sunburn on his face, sprawled diagonal across his rumpled bedsheets, cellphone alarm bleating, toes tucked, and thinks of her. [ Western Teleport .]

Welcome back my fellow music connoisseurs, to this weeks edition of the Indie Sabbath , your Earmilk source for the freshest indie music from folk to rock and every fusion in between. Though this week's new releases is full of all sorts of very exciting releases (such as a whole bunch of vinyl reissues from Dinosaur Jr. and a DVD from "Weird Al" Yankovic 's latest round of touring), we're most giddy about the new album from AIDS Wolf , Ma Vie Banale Avant-Garde (pictured). But, of course, the new releases don't stop there. Bar/None puts out the latest from Emperor X , Warner Bros. has a new one from Mutemath , and FatCat releases an album from We Were Promised Jetpacks . [...]

Underground pop provocateur Emperor X sure does make it interesting. The high school science teacher-turned-lo-fi explorer, born Chad Matheny, has become known for his pop-up shows and turning the discovery of his music into a geocaching adventure as much as his catchy, mind-bending folk narratives. His latest album, "Western Teleport," is out Tuesday on Bar/None Records , and apparently if you have the coordinates, there's more than what's just on the record. Which is plenty, by the way, especially if you can keep up with Matheny's stream-of-consciousness chronicles inspired by life in and around his [...]
Folk-inflected indie dance pop that sounds like it's wafting up through your window from a dance hall two blocks away and underground.
