Ireland's Empire State Human (incidentally, the first act we interviewed on electronic rumors , all those years ago!) has released a brand new single this month, 'December Rose'. A beautiful, deep electronic ballad-with-a-beat, 'December Rose' not only features Aidan Casserly's Kraftwerk inspired machine synthesizer patterns but some huge cinematic chord work that life the track into the relms of epic. Add to that a lilting, almost '90's beach House, saxophone and you have an evocative slice of laid back SynthPop. ♫ Empire State Human - December Rose [...]
NinthWave Records , one of the bedrocks of the North American SynthPop scene for well over a decade, has unleashed their Fall Sampler for free, right now, on Amazon. If you head on over to the link below you'll find 18 tracks of the pick of Modern SynthPop and the cream of NinthWave Records for the grand total of $0.00. Featuring tracks from The Modern (Matinée Club), Alan Replica, Kyle Brylin, The Garland Cult, The Peoples and electronic rumors alumni Empire State Human and Van Go Lion the sampler is a no-brainer [...]

This is a special treat. One of my all time favorite tracks from Eurythmics was "Love is a Stranger" from their self-titled 1983 album, a followup to their "Sweet Dreams" single. Fast forward to 2009. Empire State Human is an electro band from Ireland, indeed musicians I have had the pleasure of collaborating with. Aidan Casserly, the singer of this band, has even contributed to original material of mine, which I recorded under the name of Synthetik FM. Well, it turns out ESH's [...]
The mid-90's were dark, dark, times for SynthPop fans. All that existed was this thing (amusingly) called 'Modern SynthPop', a stale, stagnant regurgitation machine that sounded like vocal trance by people who with little clue about vocals or trance. General MIDI 4/4 beats and badly produced, unimaginative (read: four layered arpeggios) music met Dave Gahan karaoke vocals. It was all so contrived, so formulaic, so boring and so not relevant. For these reasons it remained the smallest of music scenes, but for a time, it was all we had. There was, however, one beacon in the darkness. A [...]
You know the deal, check out the track, if you like it, well go visit the bands myspace and see what they are made of! Sadly, I am still trying to play catch-up with my emails. So here are some more goodies that I have discovered while skimming through the good old inbox! : Divisible [mp3] : Divisible - Love Is The Cost | myspace Empire State Human [...]

Yep, those tasty boys (well, one of them) from Kraftwerk have taken their hands to working with emerging artists from, of all places, Ireland! Empire State Human hail from Dublin and produce electro with elements of big beat within it. Not shabby stuff but, then, what would one expect from a band working with THE legends of electronic music? Nothing less. Offered up on a platter for us is the Rob Kiraly remix which takes it into pulsating electro territory and keeps much of the vocal in place for [...]

Dublin band Empire State Human worked closely with Wolfgang Flür of German oldschool-electro-pioneers Kraftwerk and comes along with instrumental based electronic music with a retro-electro edge. Their style is a combination of analogue and digital synthesized sound, mixed with powerful rhythms and overlaid with strong pop vocal melodies. Remixer Rob Kiraly is blessedly more into house and techno and made the "Melancholic Afro" surge ahead with force. Otherwise this track would be hardly worth mentioning - but that's just my two cents worth of course. Get the original stuff at [...]

During the nineties SynthPop was having a rough time. As R&B, Indie and Manufactured Pop dominated the airwaves, SynthPop artists and their fans were marginalized to the outskirts of musical society. Ironically for a genre with the word 'pop' in it's name, SynthPop became unknown, underground, surviving through small groups keeping in touch on the Internet, at first on Usenet and mp3.com and later dedicated forums and a handful of small labels. Being so small the 'Modern SynthPop' scene, as it became known, became a little too insular, a little too satisfied with it's lot, and eventually, unfortunately, became [...]

A very quick goodbye to you all for a bit. Simon and I are getting married on Saturday and then we're popping down to London for a few days to take in some culture and dry land (so if anyone fancies meeting up, just drop us a note). We're not actually doing the music for our reception, although I'm sure we'll both pick a handful of tracks that absolutely must get played. We have two lovely people who have agree to play DJ for us, and I'm happy to leave things in their capable hands, especially as my [...]

I was quite delighted when dearest Tim selected my theme, cover versions that are better than the originals , for this week's Contrast Podcast . The podcast is a right belter full of wonderful songs selected by wonderful people, and you should all pop over and download it immediately if you haven't done so already. I'm insanely fond of cover versions of all varieties...the good, the bad, the, um, performed by non-English speaking children. In the end, the track that [...]
